Foreign Languages And Sustainability: Addressing The Connections, Communities And Comparisons Standards In Higher Education, Eleanor Horst, Joshua Pearce

Joshua M. Pearce

This article describes an interdisciplinary collaboration that combined the study of German language with instruction in environmental issues (sustainable development). The project, involving both an independent study and a classroom unit, allowed students to make connections between disciplines, establish contact with German-speaking communities outside the university, and make cultural and linguistic comparisons. By expanding the German-language content on the Web site Appropedia.org, which is devoted to global sustainable development, students took an active role in learning by creating content that can be read and used by the global community of German speakers. This project provided a model for successful interdisciplinary …

Religion-Based Claims For Impinging On Queer Citizenship, Donn Short, Bruce Macdougall Dec 2009

Religion-Based Claims For Impinging On Queer Citizenship, Donn Short, Bruce Macdougall

Donn Short

Competing claims for legal protection based on religion and on sexual orientation have arisen fairly frequently in Canada in the past decade or so. The authors place such competitions into five categories based on the nature of who is making the claim and who is impacted, the site of the competition, and the extent to which the usual legal and constitutional norms applicable are affected. Three of the five categories identified involve a claim that a religion operate in some form in the public area so as to impinge on the usual protection of equality on the basis of sexual …

A Critical Race Analysis Of The Hiring Process For Head Coaches In Ncaa College Football, Keith Harrison Dec 2009

A Critical Race Analysis Of The Hiring Process For Head Coaches In Ncaa College Football, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

In this article, we respond to Singer’s (2005) challenge to sport management scholars to consider race-based epistemologies in conducting certain kinds of research in the field, as we use critical race theory (CRT) as a framework to analyze the Black Coaches & Administrators (BCA) Hiring Report Card (HRC) (Harrison & Yee, 2009). The BCA HRC was created as a result of the access discrimination that has historically taken place in college sport (Brooks & Althouse, 2000; Cunningham & Sagas, 2005), which has consequently contributed to the underrepresentation of racial minorities in the head coach position in college football. The HRC …

Comic books, graphic novels, picture books, wordless picture books, illustrated books, and novels, as distinct genres abide to specific conventions. Word-image interaction in each genre is also guided by conventions and can only vary within a preset range. These identifiable conventions assist the interpretation of stories; the reader knows what to expect and how to receive it. We assert, however, that the postmodern era has brought the publication of works that break conventions, resist categorization, subvert reading expectations, and yet are highly successful in communicating powerful and engaging stories.

Aspectos Estructurales Y Formales Comunes A La Creacion Poetica Y Musical En Mozart: Quinteto Para Clarinete Y Cuerdas En La Mayor De Jose Emilio Pacheco Y Reflejos De La Noche De Mario Lavista, Marianella P. Machado

Controlled Language - Does My Company Need It?, Uwe Muegge Dec 2009

Controlled Language - Does My Company Need It?, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

A controlled language is a natural language, as opposed to an artificial or constructed language. Natural languages such as English or German are languages that are used by humans for general communication. A controlled language differs from the general language in two significant ways: 1. The grammar rules of a controlled language are typically more restrictive than those of the general language. 2. The vocabulary of a controlled language typically contains only a fraction of the words that are permissible in the general language.

The Sporting Image What If? An Anthology Of Creative Writing Based Upon Real Events In Sport, Clive A. Palmer Dec 2009

The Sporting Image What If? An Anthology Of Creative Writing Based Upon Real Events In Sport, Clive A. Palmer

Clive Palmer

The focus of this book is to take a sideways look at iconic features in sport; characters, events, artefacts and general goings-on. By considering the notion of ‘What If?’ reality has been re-interpreted and presented differently through a medium of creative writing. Each chapter has some underpinning research which is intended to illustrate where the creative story departs from reality. The research aspect is also to give a sense of plausibility for a range of different outcomes which are ostensibly possible for some famous people in sport. Through the conflict created for these characters we find many ‘good apples’ in …

XXI

Direito, Utopia E Insularidade, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Virtude Da Constituição E Virtudes Republicanas, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Dec 2009

Virtude Da Constituição E Virtudes Republicanas, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Instituições, Trabalho E Pessoas, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Dynamic Motives In Esl Computer-Mediated Peer Response, Li Jin Dec 2009

Dynamic Motives In Esl Computer-Mediated Peer Response, Li Jin

Li Jin

This paper reports a case study investigating how the use of instant messaging (IM) mediated ESL students’ motives in their participation in computer-mediated peer response (CMPR) tasks in an ESL academic writing class. Qualitative data including interview transcripts, chat transcripts, on-and off-screen behaviors captured on video cameras and with a screen-capturing tool, researcher observations, and student drafts collected from two low-advanced-level ESL students were analyzed. Data analysis indicated that with the opportunities afforded and challenges presented by IM technology, the ESL students were driven by heterogeneous and multiple motives even when they were participating in the same task, and their …

Dr. Grace Hui Chin Lin

Based on poetry translation and cross-cultural interpretation Strategies, this book has been completed to demonstrate poem interpretation from English to Mandarin. It briefly introduces various significant English poets and their well-known poetries. In fact, poetry translating is an attracting academic task that many English majors would like to engage. Because it not only practices Linguistics accumulations but also builds living paces with a romantic atmosphere. When creating cross-cultural interpretations in poetry translations, to search for a perfect balance between accuracies of resourced texts and beauties of produced texts is a crucial task that a translator should pursuit. To achieve this, …

Mining And Civilization, An Illustrated History, Fathi Habashi Dec 2009

Mining And Civilization, An Illustrated History, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Mining and Civilization has been conceived to compliment the author's two books History of Metallurgy and Readings in Historical Metallurgy and to fill a gap in the literature. It is difficult to study the history of metallurgy without studying the history of mining at the same time. Each time the author visits ancient ruins or examines an ancient stone statue he recalls the work of miners who brought the material from a quarry so that the sculptor can create a work of art. History of mining, quarrying, and stone carving is history of civilization.
