Method, Macintyre, And Pedagogy: Inviting Students To Participate In Theology As A Living Conversation, Richard Crane
Method, Macintyre, And Pedagogy: Inviting Students To Participate In Theology As A Living Conversation, Richard Crane
Bible & Religion Educator Scholarship
Teaching theology within academic institutions with confessional commitments and theologically conservative students requires holding together, in creative tension, two pedagogical goals. The challenge is to promote rigorous academic inquiry by encouraging student openness to engagement with perspectives that challenge their own beliefs while simultaneously constructing a course that is experienced as a safe space where students do not feel their personal faith is under attack. This essay presents the argument that a methodological framework for introductory theology courses informed by Alasdair MacIntyre's reflections on the nature of living traditions holds great promise for achieving these objectives. The essay will also …

A Case Study Of The Integration Of Smartmusic Into Three Middle School Band Classrooms Found In Upstate South Carolina, Carla Fowler Tucker
Education Dissertations and Projects
Technology is at the forefront of education as teachers expand their instructional strategies to incorporate technology in the hope of educating students to be 21st century learners. As more and more districts encourage educators to use technology in all classrooms, teachers search to find programs that will help their students in their particular subjects. The band classroom is not immune to this push in education; therefore, we find band directors searching for a tool to use in their band rooms.
This study looked at a web-based music program designed for performance-based groups. The purpose of the study was to examine …

The Sons Of Indiana: Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity And The Fight For Civil Rights, Gregory S. Parks, Wendy Marie Laybourn
The Sons Of Indiana: Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity And The Fight For Civil Rights, Gregory S. Parks, Wendy Marie Laybourn
Indiana Law Journal
The common narrative about African Americans’ quest for social justice and civil rights during the twentieth century consists, largely, of men and women working through organizations to bring about change. The typical list of organizations includes, inter alia, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National Urban League, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. What are almost never included in this list are African American collegiate-based fraternities. However, at the turn of the twentieth century, a small group of organizations emerged founded on personal excellence, the development and sustainment of fictive-kinship ties, …

Developing Mobile Apps For Improving The Orientation Experience Of First-Year "Third Level" Students, Nevan Bermingham, Mark Prendergast, Trevor Boland, Mary O'Rawe, Barry Ryan
Conference papers
Smartphone usage by students has increased rapidly over the last number of years, and research points to an expectation for increased utilisation of mobile applications in college educational environments. First year students have particular needs when they transition to higher education (or 'third level'), as they can experience a number of personal, social and cultural difficulties. Orientation is a critical stage for these students and the earlier students have access to important orientation information, the less stressful the initial stages of college are. At Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), the authors designed a bespoke mobile application tailored to the particular …

Exploring Latinidad: Latina Voice And Cultural Awareness In A Catholic Female Single-Sex High School, Candy Navarro
LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations
This study focused on the perceptions of 16 Latina students regarding their cultural school climate as well as the thoughts of two administrators and six teachers at an all-female Catholic high school. Students revealed that, while they felt very supported by the school’s faculty and administration, they revealed that their culture was not fully embraced and/or represented in their educational curriculum and school’s practices. Students also alluded to deliberately choosing and valuing to spend their free time with their family over their classmates. Further, they felt disconnected from their school’s mission, which emphasized sisterhood among students. Furthermore, bicultural students provided …

Globalization And Possibilities For Intercultural Awareness: Multimodal Arabic Culture Portfolios At A Catholic University, Sawsan Abbadi
Globalization And Possibilities For Intercultural Awareness: Multimodal Arabic Culture Portfolios At A Catholic University, Sawsan Abbadi
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This case study explores the teaching and learning of Arabic at one Catholic university campus, with a focus upon the complex interactions between language and culture in a postmodern globalized context. Specifically, it examines the use of “multimodal culture portfolios” as a means to engage students both linguistically and culturally in classroom and community discourses. Through their interactions and co-construction of knowledge with other participants, these students are led to think about the multiple communicative contexts that are shaping and being shaped by them. Data collection was conducted through survey questionnaires and students' responses to the assigned culture portfolio. The …

Maine has a unique environment to drive aquaculture research, as there are roughly 3,500 miles of coastline that serve as a living laboratory. Aquaculture was identified as a key growth sector for the state by the Maine Innovation Economic Advisory Board in the 2010 Science and Technology Action Plan. In 2014 alone, the aquaculture industry grossed $137.6 million in economic impact for the state.
Our current NSF EPSCoR Track 1 grant, the Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture Network (SEANET), consists of four research Themes: Ecological and Sociological Carrying Capacity; Aquaculture in a Changing Ecosystem; Innovations in Aquaculture; and Human Dimensions. These Themes …

Moral Imagination And Adorno: Before And After Auschwitz, Catlyn Origitano
Moral Imagination And Adorno: Before And After Auschwitz, Catlyn Origitano
Dissertations (1934 -)
In the aftermath of national or international tragedies, appeals for action such as, “Never Forget” or “Never Again” are ubiquitous. Theodor Adorno makes a similar call in the wake of the Holocaust, proclaiming that all education should be focused on the prevention of another genocide. While most would agree with such a statement, practically how do we respond to such a call, specifically in light of Adorno’s work? Answering this question is at the heart of this project and I argue that imaginative memorials can fulfill Adorno’s criteria for post-Auschwitz education. I first present a theory of moral imagination by …

Cultivating A Learner’S Stance For Engagement In Teacher-Inquiry: An Aim For Writing Pedagogy Education, Jessica Rivera-Mueller
Cultivating A Learner’S Stance For Engagement In Teacher-Inquiry: An Aim For Writing Pedagogy Education, Jessica Rivera-Mueller
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation argues that writing teacher educators (WTEs) can more purposefully advance their commitment to sponsoring inquiry-oriented teacher development by helping pre-service and practicing writing teachers examine how they are developing as inquirers. Building from scholarship in Composition and English Education and the findings from a narrative-based qualitative study that included four secondary and post-secondary teachers of writing, I have named this attention to how teachers learn and grow their inquiry processes a learner’s stance for engagement in teacher-inquiry. This stance is a readiness to see and engage professional work with an eye toward growing one’s ability to engage …
What Are Factors Of An Effective Parent And Family Involvement Program Within High School?, Nicole Walsh
What Are Factors Of An Effective Parent And Family Involvement Program Within High School?, Nicole Walsh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
According to the literature, parents or guardians of high school students will participate within the high school—though their participation is dependent on many factors. Parents with a higher social capital tend to be the most involved, while parents with lower social capital tend to be less involved. In other words, generally parents or guardians with high social capital would be much more likely to be involved in their child’s school, whereas parents with low social capital would not be involved in their child’s school at all (Goodwin, Rothon, Stansfeld, 2012). In this study, the researcher formulated and analyzed the following …

What American Students Can Learn From Immersing Themselves In Africa, Julius A. Amin
Julius A. Amin
More than one million people travelled from around the world to study at American universities in the 2013-2014 academic year. By contrast, just under 300,000 Americans enrolled to study abroad. In this era of globalisation, it’s no surprise that so many young people are keen to study abroad. But as the Institute of International Education’s research reveals, the majority of US students are sticking close to home - not geographically, but culturally. Africa remains on the margins when it comes to American universities' curricula and initiatives like study-abroad programmes. American university students also display profoundly ill-informed views about Africa.
