Session A-3: Across The Wide Missouri: Illinois & Early Exploration Of The Trans-Mississippi West, Claiborne A. Skinner Jr.

Claiborne A. Skinner Jr.

Illinois History is often perceived as a contradiction in terms. Until the arrival of Abraham Lincoln, most folks think that nothing of any note happened here. This presentation will address the French traders and explorers from the Illinois Country who pushed west up the Missouri and Arkansas Rivers in the century preceding Lewis and Clark's more famous jaunt. The two knew of these French travelers only too well and recruited a half dozen Illinois French at Fort Massac and Kaskaskia to show them how to get to the "unknown". The effect these men had on the Plains was profound.

It is important to understand the context in which gender budgeting has acquired great attention in the Union Budget 2013-14. India’s record for achieving the Millennium Development Goals has been extremely poor as compared to several African, Latin American and Asian Counties. In international for a “Shining India” India has been named and shamed continuously for not being able to reduce maternal mortality rate and child mortality rate, wide spread anaemia and malnutrition among women and children, starvation deaths in certain pockets, sky rocketing prices of essential goods for the poor, namely food, water and cooking fuel.

Introduction To The Ilr School At Fifty: Voices Of The Faculty, Alumni, And Friends, David B. Lipsky

David B Lipsky

[Excerpt] Today the school's faculty is as strong as it has ever been. It consists of renowned researchers and accomplished practitioners who are, at the same time, dedicated to their students and to classroom teaching. Our students are outstanding—so outstanding that I wonder if I could be admitted if I were applying today! Our extension and outreach programs serve 30,000 adults every year and are the envy of all our academic competitors. As we look to the future we know we have a solid foundation on which to build. In dreams begin responsibilities. The dream that Irving Ives and a …

The Future Lies Ahead (With Apology To Mort Sahl), David B. Lipsky

David B Lipsky

[Excerpt] The progress and development of the ILR School during the past 50 years, though sometimes uneven in both pace and direction, has largely met the promise and expectations embodied in the founding legislation. The fulfillment of the legislative purpose testifies to the contributions of those many individuals and institutions with whom we have interacted over this period of astonishing growth in size, complexity of structure and programs, and recognized stature at home and abroad in both the academic and practitioner worlds. Because the largest part of my professional life h a s been spent as a member of the …

Defying Borders: Transforming Learning Through Collaborative Feminist Organizing And Interdisciplinary, Transnational Pedagogy, Terri Carney, Margaretha Geertsema Sligh, Ann M. Savage, Ageeth Sluis

Margaretha Geertsema-Sligh

The authors provide a case study of how a group of faculty members was able to initiate a transformation in student learning and institutional structures at a small university in the Midwestern U.S. through the introduction of collaborative feminist organizing and pedagogy. It details faculty-led initiatives that set the stage for innovative teaching and learning, and it describes the authors' experience in the face of resistance when introducing a global women's human rights course into the university's new core curriculum. Because of its divers, interdisciplinary and transnational content, this course challenged deeply ingrained disciplinary and pedagogical borders of both traditional …

Vencer A Crise. Ética, Psicologia E Partidos, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Jan 2013

Vencer A Crise. Ética, Psicologia E Partidos, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Latino Adaptations And Connections In Rural America, Refugio I. Rochin Dec 2012

Latino Adaptations And Connections In Rural America, Refugio I. Rochin

Refugio I. Rochin

A majority of rural Latinos are immigrants or the first sons and daughters of immigrants from Mexico. They arrive to survive, earn income, raise and support family and work hard without burdening public services. I offer a personal account of rural Latinos, partly through the lives of my parents, to explain Latino adaptations and contributions in America. Who are rural Latinos, how did they arrive, why and, what are their experiences and issues?

Language Policy And Education: Space And Place In Multilingual Post-Soviet States, Kara D. Brown Dec 2012

Language Policy And Education: Space And Place In Multilingual Post-Soviet States, Kara D. Brown

Kara D. Brown

Institutional isomorphists and other proponents of world culture theory argue that schools around the world are converging in many ways, while anthropologists and others question this conclusion, often arguing that local cultural differences belie superficial similarities. These viewpoints are not merely academic explanations of the spread and apparent convergence of education policies and practices around the world, but are often present in policy and practice. The authors seek both to shed new light on these often-entrenched positions and to refocus the debate by considering the presence and influence of such views in the policies and practices of international teacher exchanges. …

Art Education: Perspectives From Lonergan, Langer And Maslow, Richard M. Liddy Dec 2012

Art Education: Perspectives From Lonergan, Langer And Maslow, Richard M. Liddy

Richard M Liddy

It Takes A Team: A Semester Success Story Of Writing, Receiving, And Executing A Grant In One Semester With An English 1110.01 Class, Robert A. Eckhart, Michelle Battista

Robert A. Eckhart

The model for an inquiry-based undergraduate experience has been embraced and is thriving. But the primary focus of the undergraduate participation in research is happening outside the classroom—as an extracurricular, similar to climbing the rock wall at the Adventure Recreation Center, or swimming laps in the pool. What would happen if research was built into an undergraduate course? What if it was built into the single most widely-taken course at OSU, English 1110? Through a unique convergence of resources and people at Ohio State, we had an opportunity to answer exactly this question last semester. Co-authored by two students in …

Critical Pedagogy Of A Post-9/11 Muslim Memoir, Esmaeil Zeiny Dec 2012

Critical Pedagogy Of A Post-9/11 Muslim Memoir, Esmaeil Zeiny

Esmaeil Zeiny

Traditional education of literature would do injustice to both students and the discipline in this age of globalization. This is the era when teachers should use critical pedagogy to teach any genre of literature. Nowadays, a great number of memoirs form the Middle East perpetuate Islamophobia; yet some of them are taught at schools in the West. Perpetrating and perpetuating Islamophobia, as a trait of globalization, can be seen in some Iranian diasporic writings as well. This paper examines Persepolis: The story of a childhood, a diasporic Iranian memoir that is included in the educational curriculum of some Western schools. …

Chinese As A Foreign Language (Cfl) Students’ Lexical Tonal Development: An Investigation Of Tonal Production And Awareness Of Tonal Categories, Li Jin

Li Jin

This paper reports on an empirical study examining the relationship between beginning-level CFL students’ tonal production and their awareness of lexical tonal categories. Additionally, it investigated CFL learners’ views about the relationship. A mixed method approach was adopted to collect and analyze both quantitative and qualitative data from 23 beginning-level English-speaking adult CFL learners. The quantitative results show that the participants’ accuracy of lexical tonal production was statistically significantly correlated to their awareness of tonal categories and their tonal production was statistically more accurate than their awareness of tonal categories. The qualitative findings show that the participants didn’t rely on …

Beyond Understanding: Intercultural Teacher Empathy In The Teaching Of English As An Additional Language, Maggie Mcalinden Dec 2012

Beyond Understanding: Intercultural Teacher Empathy In The Teaching Of English As An Additional Language, Maggie Mcalinden

Dr Maggie McAlinden

In the context of increasing linguistic and cultural diversity of learners in Australian education, this phd study explored teacher empathy in a diverse tertiary education setting. The study developed a tentative, constructivist grounded theory of teacher empathy and interculturality. The findings point to the importance of teacher identity and the experience, expression and interpretation of emotion and meaning in culturally and linguistically diverse educational settings. The theory and its implications challenge, inform and support educators in Australia and beyond to meet the demand to become critical, interculturally effective educators.
