Lessons In And Out Of School, Mary K. Maloney Johnson
Lessons In And Out Of School, Mary K. Maloney Johnson
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
What are we saying to children when we leave the creativity to others in a visual environment, infused with “attitude”, snobbery, acquisitiveness and Pollyanna innocence? We’re saying that we approve this message. Visual arts teach media literacy in an atmosphere that implicitly uses vices to secure attention. School experiences cannot compete. Parents and teachers, pleading incompetence, pass undiscerning choices to the next generation. Educational illustration typically amounts to copy-machine ready, poorly drawn, saccharin cartoons. Standards exemplified by the likes of Szyk, Holling and others lie hidden on the shelves. Dismay and consternation over the failure to plumb the depths of …

Digital Technology: The Modern Medium For The Art Classroom, Linda Sue Al-Hanna
Digital Technology: The Modern Medium For The Art Classroom, Linda Sue Al-Hanna
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Digital technology is an important tool teachers can utilize in the art classroom for the purposes of instruction, lesson planning and student interaction. The computer has been around for many years, and has been a key factor in globalization in the educational setting. More and more students are connecting with others around the world and learning with the computer in more diverse ways than ever. Digital art has been quickly expanding since `Sketchpad' was developed in the late 1960's by Ivan Sutherland. Students today have been born into a digital world and it has become imperative that teachers make the …
The Role Of Visual Art In K-5 Classrooms In A Midwestern School District, Alexis Zaccariello
The Role Of Visual Art In K-5 Classrooms In A Midwestern School District, Alexis Zaccariello
Theses and Graduate Projects
Art programming, both inside and outside of school, is beneficial to children. It is beneficial because art competencies promote higher order thinking, problem solving skills, self-efficacy, and engagement. It has been shown, however, that not all American students have access to quality art programming. If students are not getting regular art programming from art teachers are they getting a version of art instruction from their classroom teachers? In this study 56 elementary teachers at a mid-western school district were surveyed and interviewed on how they have used visual art in the classroom. These teachers have varying degrees of visual art …

A Qualitative Study: Integrating Art And Science In The Environment, Deborah Naughton Mills
Wayne State University Dissertations
The study was used to develop an understanding of the nature of a creative learning experience that incorporated the foundational elements of Reggio Emilia, place-based education, and experience design. The study took place in an urban high school with eight students in an advanced placement art class. The qualitative research project revolved around the pollinator garden that the science teacher planted in the year prior to the study and the garden that was planted in the spring. Students were asked to create an art project that could withstand the Michigan climate. The science teacher lectured on elements of the pollinator …
Attainable Arts Integration In The Elementary School Classroom, Anneliese Gentzsch
Attainable Arts Integration In The Elementary School Classroom, Anneliese Gentzsch
Honors Program Theses
Arts Integration is an education philosophy that advocates for educating the whole child in a way that will prepare him or her for life outside the classroom. Arts Integration can effectively do this because it makes art, which is seen everywhere in the world around people, an essential part of the classroom. In an Arts Integration classroom, the arts are integrated with mathematics, science, social studies, and reading. Arts Integration teachers strive to authentically incorporate music, drama, the visual arts, dance, and literature into their classrooms on a daily basis. When teachers authentically incorporate the arts into the classroom, the …
Creative Writing Thesis: Poetry, Desmond Bonhomme
Creative Writing Thesis: Poetry, Desmond Bonhomme
CMC Senior Theses
The title of this compilation of my own creative writings is Trees, Breathe, Paper. This unique collection of poetry, short stories and prose contains a range of work, composed from 2002-2012. The thematic goal of this undertaking is to ballast as many implicit and explicit meanings as are comprehensible, and to extrapolate a distinct spectrum of latent and straightforward explanations with discernible psycho-analytical accuracy. We all know poetry is truly formless and based on springs of natural inspiration. Thus, we derive our purest inspiration from the natural world and we prune it in its unfiltered, raw state. Poetry is an …

Art therapy-based programs could open the doors of the museum to another population of visitors with disabilities, particularly those suffering from mental illness and in need of healing and wellness. The above statement serves as the core of this thesis with the ultimate goal to analyze and research the place of art therapy in a museum setting. Investigation of existing literature, interviews with professionals, and case studies, reveal the ways in which art therapy can be facilitated in a museum setting in order to better reach this population. Furthermore this thesis explores how collaboration between museum educators and art therapists …
