Lessons In And Out Of School, Mary K. Maloney Johnson Jan 2013

Lessons In And Out Of School, Mary K. Maloney Johnson

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

What are we saying to children when we leave the creativity to others in a visual environment, infused with “attitude”, snobbery, acquisitiveness and Pollyanna innocence? We’re saying that we approve this message. Visual arts teach media literacy in an atmosphere that implicitly uses vices to secure attention. School experiences cannot compete. Parents and teachers, pleading incompetence, pass undiscerning choices to the next generation. Educational illustration typically amounts to copy-machine ready, poorly drawn, saccharin cartoons. Standards exemplified by the likes of Szyk, Holling and others lie hidden on the shelves. Dismay and consternation over the failure to plumb the depths of …

The Role Of Visual Art In K-5 Classrooms In A Midwestern School District, Alexis Zaccariello Jan 2013

The Role Of Visual Art In K-5 Classrooms In A Midwestern School District, Alexis Zaccariello

Theses and Graduate Projects

Art programming, both inside and outside of school, is beneficial to children. It is beneficial because art competencies promote higher order thinking, problem solving skills, self-efficacy, and engagement. It has been shown, however, that not all American students have access to quality art programming. If students are not getting regular art programming from art teachers are they getting a version of art instruction from their classroom teachers? In this study 56 elementary teachers at a mid-western school district were surveyed and interviewed on how they have used visual art in the classroom. These teachers have varying degrees of visual art …

Attainable Arts Integration In The Elementary School Classroom, Anneliese Gentzsch

Arts Integration is an education philosophy that advocates for educating the whole child in a way that will prepare him or her for life outside the classroom. Arts Integration can effectively do this because it makes art, which is seen everywhere in the world around people, an essential part of the classroom. Arts Integration teachers strive to authentically incorporate music, drama, the visual arts, dance, and literature into their classrooms on a daily basis. When teachers authentically incorporate the arts into the classroom, the …

Creative Writing Thesis: Poetry, Desmond Bonhomme

CMC Senior Theses

The title of this compilation of my own creative writings is Trees, Breathe, Paper. This unique collection of poetry, short stories and prose contains a range of work, composed from 2002-2012. The thematic goal of this undertaking is to ballast as many implicit and explicit meanings as are comprehensible, and to extrapolate a distinct spectrum of latent and straightforward explanations with discernible psycho-analytical accuracy. We all know poetry is truly formless and based on springs of natural inspiration. Thus, we derive our purest inspiration from the natural world and we prune it in its unfiltered, raw state. Poetry is an …
