Nigerian education needs teachers with passion – men and women with fire in their bones, impatient for lasting and enduring results. Such extra-ordinary pedagogues are people who will give themselves as ministers and missionaries in the temple of education.

Since the election of the first American college president in 1640—Henry Dunster of Harvard College—the position of president has been one of extreme responsibility and high visibility. There are many questions regarding how best to prepare individuals to attain this role (Chandler, 2006). Individuals come to the presidency from a variety of environments. In this paper, we explore the concept of adult education and lifelong learning in the Latin America and Caribbean region and situate it within the context of the CONFINTEA V, Agenda for Adult Education which was more recently reaffirmed by CONFINTEA VI. The first section provides a contextual discussion of how adult education and lifelong learning are conceptualized in the region while the second discusses the region’s response to the agenda for adult education. The third segment highlights some of the associated challenges and concludes with implications for adult educators.

Founded on the significance of the skin bleaching phenomenon in Jamaica, and the persistent influences of colonialism, the purpose of this paper is twofold: (a) to explore the skin bleaching phenomenon and (b) to provide a snapshot of how colonialism (despite national independence) influences perceptions of beauty and identity in Jamaica, particularly through informal learning. Based on an empirical study, the research sought to explore and understand the perceptions and motivations behind the practice of skin bleaching, given the historical and social context, and how it influenced the participants’ perceptions of beauty and identity.

This short nontechnical article reviews the Arrow Impossibility Theorem and its implications for rational democratic decisionmaking. In the 1950s, economist Kenneth J. Arrow proved that no method for producing a unique social choice involving at least three choices and three actors could satisfy four seemingly obvious constraints that are practically constitutive of democratic decisionmaking. Any such method must violate such a constraint and risks leading to disturbingly irrational results such and Condorcet cycling. I explain the theorem in plain, nonmathematical language, and discuss the history, range, and prospects of avoiding what seems like a fundamental theoretical challenge to the possibility …

The purpose of the study was to find out factors affecting active community participation in adult literacy and non-formal education programmes in Anambra state. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The design was descriptive involving 475 respondents selected from participants in the UNICEF assisted adult literacy and non formal education programme through disproportionate stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected using a 27 item questionnaire. Mean scores were used in answering the research questions, while t-test was used in testing the hypothesis at 0.5 level of significance. Public secondary school teachers in Zamboanga City have High Morale in their work performance as teachers. This study sought to develop and validate a Physical Education Achievement Test (PEAT) which will be used for accurate assessment of adult learners in basic education. Eight items were developed and pilot tested. Validation and reliability were determined using Kuder-Richardson formula ‘21’. Based on the results some recommendations were made.

This study developed and validated a diagnostic health education achievement test for adult learners in Anambra State. Two research questions and a research hypothesis guided the study. The instrument was pretested. Following the result of the pilot test, a total of 96 multiple choice test items were administered to 1, 342 adult learners. The analysis of the data was carried out using item analysis. Kuder-Richardson formula ‘21’ was used to determine the internal consistency of the instrument. Finally, t-test was used to test the hypothesis. Based on the results, some recommendations were made.

Community colleges in America developed out of a need to fill the gap between high school or technical education and university-level study. The two-year postsecondary experience which is typically offered at locations that are “community friendly” has attracted persons of color and those with more conservative economic means in ever-increasing numbers. Historically, these marginalized populations have experienced educational inequalities in larger numbers than other groups. The world is more often exposed to “overcomology” —society’s assertion that oppressed peoples or so-called minorities have overcome past injustices and are now able to access the same educational opportunities as so-called majority groups. This study focused on the necessity of constructing and using standardized achievement instrument for assessing adult learners. Tests and other procedures for measuring learners’ progress serve as basis for instructional decisions taken by educators on learners. For this reasons, educators are supposed to be versed on the production of good quality tests in order to obtain true estimates of learners’ achievement. This study discussed the qualities which a good test should have namely; validity, reliability and usability.
