This phenomenological study explores how older, professional men coped adaptively with involuntary job loss, following the global financial crisis of 2008. Participants demonstrated skillful engagement, Stoic wisdom, narrative openness, and rugged interdependence to learn through the uncertainties that accompanied this unanticipated life transition.

Chinese students are the largest group among all the international students. Many factors motivate them to study in the U.S. and their decision to stay or leave the U.S. after graduation. However, limited research investigates these aspects by differentiating students into non-traditional students and traditional student groups. As a result, this study conducted individual interviews to examine: 1) factors that influence Chinese students’ (non-traditional students vs. traditional students) choices of the host college or university in the U.S.; and 2) their decisions to stay or leave the U.S. after graduation. The Relationship Between Instrumental And Transformative Learning In Structured Workplace Learning Programs: Insights From Embedded Formative Assessment, Cheryl K. Baldwin

A grounded theory study of tacit knowledge elicited in workplace learning programs examined instrumental and transformative elements. Observational, reflective and interview data indicated that learner beliefs about work challenged content legitimacy. Low levels of reflective dialogue were associated with immediate application or quieting reactions. Instrumental content helped prompt perspective shifts.

Empirical civic engagement research based in a South American context. Participants included adult learner populations engaged in revolutionary protests that opposed private for-profit education in Chile. Findings were higher order Spiral Dynamic Theory thinking at the for-profits and lower civic engagement.

This paper draws upon intertextuality to explore how an African American male adult learner uses his religious faith as a resource for persisting in an adult literacy program.
