The present invention relates to the preparation and use in primates of whole organismvaccines in which the MEP pathway is disrupted such that synthesis of HMBPP by the bacterial cells is substantially blocked. The data provided demonstrates that, when bacteria or other vaccine vectors that comprise an active MEP pathway are used in vaccine methods, the .gamma..delta. T cell response dominates, potentially clearing the vaccine strain via .gamma..delta. T cell-mediated killing of vector infected antigen presenting cells and reducing its utility as a stimulator of a productive adaptive immune response, specifically priming or boosting of CD4.sup.+ and CD8.sup.+ .alpha..beta. Assessment Of The Blockchain Technology Adoption For The Management Of The Electronic Health Record Systems, Saeed Mohammed Alzahrani
Dissertations and Theses
Blockchain is an emerging technology that holds great promises in healthcare despite slow adoption and previous unsuccessful implementation projects. Blockchain adoption in healthcare has been slow, partly because healthcare is a heavily regulated and complex industry. Blockchain applications span various areas of healthcare such as patient data management, health information exchange, health supply chain management, financial and insurance claims, clinical trial, biomedical devices tracking, and pharmaceutical counterfeit. The main challenges with blockchain technology in healthcare are: scarcity of real applications, the high level of failing projects, and the need for various parties to function together. There is, however, a lack …

Consumers Beware: How Are Your Favorite "Free" Investment Apps Regulated?, Siqi Wang
Duke Law & Technology Review
The proliferation of free or low-cost investment apps has disrupted the financial industry in recent years. Major brokerage firms have been pressured to go to zero fees due to intense competition from their fintech counterparts. While these apps have extended their products and services to those underserved by traditional brokers, some of their practices raise consumer protection concerns. Namely, the practice of “payment for order flow,” which helps fintech startups sustain a zero-commission model, could lead to subordinating customers’ best interest to market makers who acquire their retail orders from these fintech startups. Further, “cash management accounts,” newly popular among …

Study Of Uv Degradation On Plastic (Pet) Aerosols, Rodney L. Prater, Priyan R. Manjeshwar, Andrew W. Franckhauser, Daniel J. Durham, Niles G. Stenmark, Daniel S. Mcgrath
Journal of Applied Packaging Research
The present study was aimed to explore the impact of UV radiation, from ‘real world’ environmental exposure, on the degradation of plastic PET aerosol containers. Additionally, the intent was to correlate the ‘real world’ environmental exposure to artificial sunlight, using a Xenon-Arc lamp, to develop a simulated test. The standardized methodology could then be used to evaluate the integrity of the plastic aerosol container and product, without the complexity of using ‘real world’ exposure. Through this study, a lab method was developed and validated that would simulate the effect of UV radiation using the Xenon-Arc. Moreover, a correlation was made …

Taking Advantage Of Institutional Weakness? Political Stability And Foreign Subsidiary Survival In Primary Industries, Nathaniel C. Lupton, Donya Behnam, Alfredo Jiménez
Faculty Publications
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the extent to which locating primary industry subsidiaries in politically unstable countries impacts their survival. The authors argue that foreign multinational enterprises in less stable political environments can shape policies that are impactful on the costs of operating in primary industries and avoid compliance with more stringent policies at home.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a sample of 753 primary sector investments of Japanese multinational enterprises during the period 1986 to 2013, the authors conduct a parametric survival analysis of the relationship between political stability and subsidiary survival.
Findings
Political instability has a slight, curvilinear relationship with …

Do Innovative Firms Communicate More? Evidence From The Relation Between Patenting And Management Guidance, Sterling Huang, Jeffrey Ng, Tharindra Ranashinghe, Mingyue Zhang
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Successful innovations could induce more disclosure if the information asymmetry between the firm and its investors about post-innovation outcomes leads investors to demand more information. However, such innovations also likely entail greater proprietary cost concerns, which deter disclosure. This paper uses patent grants to examine the effect of innovation success on management guidance behavior. We find that more management guidance follows patent grants, suggesting that despite disclosure cost concerns, firms with successful innovations do respond to information demand. This association is stronger after enactment of Regulation Fair Disclosure and for firms with greater institutional investor ownership, further highlighting the role …
