Will High-Frequency Trading Practices Transform The Financial Markets In The Asia Pacific Region?, Robert John Kauffman, Yuzhou Hu, Dan Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
High-frequency trading (HFT) practices in the global financial markets involve the use of information and communication technologies (ICT), especially the capabilities of high-speed networks, rapid computation, and algorithmic detection of changing information and prices that create opportunities for computers to effect low-latency trades that can be accomplished in milliseconds. HFT practices exist because a variety of new technologies have made them possible, and because financial market infrastructure capabilities have also been changing so rapidly. The U.S. markets, such as the National Association for Securities Dealers Automated Quote (NASDAQ) market and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), have maintained relevance and …
Technology Investment Decision-Making Under Uncertainty, Robert J. Kauffman, Jun Liu, Dan Ma
Technology Investment Decision-Making Under Uncertainty, Robert J. Kauffman, Jun Liu, Dan Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Innovations involving information technology (IT) provide potentially valuable investment opportunities for industry and government organizations. Significant uncertainties are associated with decision-making for IT investment though, a problem that senior executives have been concerned about for a long time. The uncertainties include consumer, market and regulatory responses, IT-driven changes in operational and transactional performance, technology standards and competition, and future market conditions. All these things have an impact on organizations’ willingness to adopt. As a result, traditional capital budgeting, investment experience, and intuition have not been very effective in IT investment decision-making. We propose a new option-based stochastic valuation modeling approach …
Crowdsourcing With Tullock Contests: A New Perspective, Tie Luo, Salil S Kanhere, Hwee-Pink Tan, Fan Wu
Crowdsourcing With Tullock Contests: A New Perspective, Tie Luo, Salil S Kanhere, Hwee-Pink Tan, Fan Wu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Incentive mechanisms for crowdsourcing have been extensively studied under the framework of all-pay auctions. Along a distinct line, this paper proposes to use Tullock contests as an alternative tool to design incentive mechanisms for crowdsourcing. We are inspired by the conduciveness of Tullock contests to attracting user entry (yet not necessarily a higher revenue) in other domains. In this paper, we explore a new dimension in optimal Tullock contest design, by superseding the contest prize - which is fixed in conventional Tullock contests - with a prize function that is dependent on the (unknown) winner's contribution, in order to maximize …

Maximizing Lifetime In Clustered Wsns With Energy Harvesting Relay: Profiling And Modeling, Pengfei Zhang, Hwee-Pink Tan, Gaoxi Xiao, Yi Yu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Inspired by clustering and energy harvesting techniques, we study multiple-cluster wireless sensor networks with energy harvesting (EH) sensors serving as relay for cluster heads. In this paper, we derive the model for realistic energy harvesting rate. Then we propose distributed matching algorithm for EHs to serve as relay for CHs. The proposed algorithm could find optimal/near-optimal CH-EH matching in short time and still achieve good performance. We evaluate the performance of our method through theoretical analysis as well as simulation.

Orchestrating Service Innovation Using Design Moves: The Dynamics Of Fit Between Service And Enterprise It Architectures, Narayan Ramasubbu, Charles Jason Woodard, Sunil Mithas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Service science perspectives highlight the central role of information technology (IT) in transforming the design and delivery of services. To discern the mechanisms through which IT impacts service innovation, we explore the dynamics of the relationship between enterprise IT and service architectures, and how these dynamics influence the performance of service innovation projects. We conducted six case studies to investigate how firms orchestrated service innovation, focusing on the design of the service architecture and its relationship to enterprise systems. We synthesize the case findings to develop a set of propositions on the antecedents and consequences of fit (or misfit) between …
Modeling The Evolution Of Generativity And The Emergence Of Digital Ecosystems, C. Jason Woodard, Eric K. Clemons
Modeling The Evolution Of Generativity And The Emergence Of Digital Ecosystems, C. Jason Woodard, Eric K. Clemons
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent literature on sociotechnical systems has employed the concept of generativity to explain the remarkable capacity for digital artifacts to support decentralized innovation and the emergence of rich business ecosystems. In this paper, we propose agent-based computational modeling as a tool for studying the evolution of generativity, and offer a set of building blocks for constructing agent-based models in which generativity evolves. We describe a series of models that we have created using these building blocks, and summarize the results of our computational experiments to date. We find in several different settings that key features of generative systems can themselves …

Examining The Growth Of Digital Wireless Phone Technology: A Take-Off Theory Analysis, Angsana A. Techatassanasoontorn, Robert J. Kauffman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The early phase of diffusion plays a critical role in determining information technology (IT) success in a market. Takeoff, the transition point from the introduction to the growth phase in the IT life cycle, is viewed as an acid test for whether a technology will succeed. We develop a theory to understand global takeoff for digital wireless phones that can be extended to other technologies with related characteristics. Drawing on technology dominance and product life cycle theories, we build a model that consists of standards, market competition, technology costs, and technology substitution to explain takeoff and subsequent market penetration growth. …

Designing Optimal Innovation Portfolio, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
There have been many approaches towards investing in innovation projects. There has been very little discussion about the need to align such investments with the mission, vision, goals, leadership style, value discipline and risk appetite of an organization. This paper reviews existing approaches to innovation related investments and suggests the setting up of a proper innovation portfolio management process along with three dashboards that will help make innovation related investment decisions in an informed manner. The resulting innovation portfolio will be optimal in its alignment with an organizations mission and vision. We expect this method to be used by all …

Core Versus Peripheral Information Technology Employees And Their Impact On Firm Performance, Ling Liu, Daniel Q. Chen, Nan Hu, Indranil Bose, Garry D. Bruton
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Scholars have widely argued, but not previously examined, that core employees with firm specific skills are critical to the firm's strategic success. This argument has led to the belief that employees whose skills are not firm specific can be readily replaced in the external market and are peripheral to the firm's strategic goals. Employing a resource based view of the firm, we find that the core information technology (IT) employees with firm specific skills are value-adding resources that aid the firm's performance whereas peripheral employees with less firm specific skills provide no value to the firm's performance. Examining the issue …
Dynamic Two-Sided Pricing Under Sequential Innovation, Mei Lin, Xiajun Pan
Dynamic Two-Sided Pricing Under Sequential Innovation, Mei Lin, Xiajun Pan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many two-sided platforms offer innovative hardware products that improve in quality and enter the market sequentially. We analyze the impact of the decrease in the production cost on a monopoly platform owner's dynamic two-sided pricing problem, in which buyers are strategic and exert a cross-side network effect to the seller side. Our findings show that a greater decrease in cost raises the optimal price of the low-quality product and allocates more buyer-side demand to the future market. Furthermore, such decrease in cost may also lead to a higher optimal price for the future higher-quality product, given a sufficiently significant quality …

Technology Investment Decision-Making Under Uncertainty: The Case Of Mobile Payment Systems, Robert J. Kauffman, Jun Liu, Dan Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The recent launch of Google Wallet has brought the issue of technology solutions in mobile payments (m-payments) to the forefront. In deciding whether and when to adopt m-payments, senior managers in banks are concerned about uncertainties regarding future market conditions, technology standards, and consumer and merchant responses, especially their willingness to adopt. This study applies economic theory and modeling for decision-making under uncertainty to bank investments in m-payment systems technology. We assess the projected benefits and costs of investment as a continuous-time stochastic process to determine optimal investment timing. We find that the value of waiting to adopt jumps when …

Managing a technology portfolio is one of the great challenges for sustained success, especially in high-technology industrieswhere technologies can be a major selling point. For engineers, this portfolio is more of a toolbox for solving design problems, but in large organizations there can be so many technologies used in different business areas that even the engineers may not beaware of all of them. When the same technologies are used in different types of products, knowledge about them can also begenerated by various groups within an organization. To improve the usefulness of a company's technology base, this paperproposes the use of a …

Not All That Glitters Is Gold: The Effect Of Attention And Blogs On The Investors' Investing Behaviors, Nan Hu, Yi Dong, Ling Liu, Lee J. Yao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This article investigates the relationship between a firm’s visibility in blogspaces, termed blog exposure, and the cross-sectional stock returns. We show that blog exposure is fundamentally different from the traditional media coverage, and securities with low blog exposure earn higher returns than stocks with high blog exposure. We further illustrate that such an effect is more prominent for stocks with low institutional ownership. Contrary to traditional media coverage, the return premium associated with blog exposure cannot be explained by either the illiquidity hypothesis or the investor recognition hypothesis based on the rational-agent framework. Instead, our results suggest that blog effect …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Emerging technologies have created disruptions in organizational, business process and industry contexts. They act as shocks to a system. We focus on a retail telecom service provider’s offerings of different bun-dles, including mobile phones, Internet and cable TV services. We conduct empirical regularities analysis for Singapore, which was affected by the emergence of smartphones in 2009. We assess the impacts on the service bundle choices of a provider’s customers. We analyze customer switching among service bundles involving three services. We compute switching proba-bilities for each of the service levels offered, as well as between bundles. We use Markov chain transition …
An Extensible Framework For Selecting Incremental Innovations, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu
An Extensible Framework For Selecting Incremental Innovations, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
There are several innovation methodologies reported in the literature starting from simple concepts such as technology push and market pull all the way to Disruptive innovation. Almost all these methods do not provide for customizability and extensibility. The method described in this paper is called Quick and Dirty Innovation Method or QaDIM in short to represent the fact that the method can be used rather easily to identify incremental innovation opportunities. The paper will first describe the basic concept, and then proceed to give a sample framework before proceeding to describe the extensibility. The method allows firms and individuals to …

Content Contribution For Revenue Sharing And Reputation: A Dynamic Structural Model, Qian Tang, Bin Gu, Andrew B. Whinston
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This study examines the incentives for content contribution in social media. We propose that exposure and reputation are the major incentives for contributors. Besides, as more and more social media Web sites offer advertising-revenue sharing with some of their contributors, shared revenue provides an extra incentive for contributors who have joined revenue-sharing programs. We develop a dynamic structural model to identify a contributor's underlying utility function from observed contribution behavior. We recognize the dynamic nature of the content-contribution decision-that contributors are forward-looking, anticipating how their decisions affect future rewards. Using data collected from YouTube, we show that content contribution is …

Guest Editors’ Introduction: Poverty, Technology, Microfinance And Development, Robert J. Kauffman, Frederick J. Riggins
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A consistent expectation on the part of public policy-makers, governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) has been that information and communications technologies (ICTs) will be a driver of economic growth and social development for the people away from poverty in the nations that harness them effectively. As this process proceeds around the world in the presence of dramatic technical progress, poverty nevertheless continues to be a difficult and grinding social problem to combat. In spite of the promised changes, the reality is that today there are greater population pressures, continuing inertial forces for economic stagnation, unstable social conditions and regional strife, …

The success of many different kinds of e-business operations depends on data and information, and how they are used to optimize operations, drive sales and marketing, and grow the business. The ability to manage and safeguard data as a strategic asset, transform it into actionable information, and use it as a strategic differentiator is a key contributor to the success of any business operation. What makes this an even more interesting challenge is the speed at which data have been growing in recent years, due to social networking, the Internet, mobile telephony and all kinds of new technologies that create …

Content Contribution In Social Media: The Case Of Youtube, Qian Tang, Bin Gu, Andrew B. Whinston
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Social media allows individuals and businesses to contribute contents for public viewing. However, little is known about the underlying incentives that why content providers derive utilities from such activities. In this study, we build a dynamic structural model to recover the utility function for content providers. Our model distinguishes short-term payoffs based on ad revenue sharing from long-term payoffs driven by content providers' reputation. The model was estimated using a panel data of 914 top 1000 video providers on You Tube from Jun 7th, 2010, to Aug 7th, 2011 since top providers are more likely to be encouraged by these …

The evolution of human society leads to increased affluence and prosperity of certain populations, sometimes at the expense of well-established markets. Market leaders in products and services tend to be so focused on their current customer base that they are caught off guard with the changes in markets created by the evolution. These changes often go unnoticed until it is too late. The change in customer base often requires the repositioning of products and services through innovations, which address new and emerging markets. Some of these changes could potentially result in tectonic market shifts that force innovation managers to involve …
Four Perspectives On Architectural Strategy, C. Jason Woodard, Joel West
Four Perspectives On Architectural Strategy, C. Jason Woodard, Joel West
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A recurring theme in the literature on technology and organizations is the concept of mirroring, which posits a duality between technological and organizational design decisions. In this paper we highlight a second, orthogonal duality between components and interfaces: designers of both products and organizations must decide what information to hide within component boundaries and what to expose to other designers. Although the component-interface duality appears in many settings, it presents especially vexing strategic challenges in the design and production of complex digital artifacts. We present a typology of four interlinked perspectives on these kinds of strategic design problems, and discuss …

Value Relevance Of Blog Visibility, Nan Hu, Ling Liu, Arindam Tripathy, Lee J. Yao
Value Relevance Of Blog Visibility, Nan Hu, Ling Liu, Arindam Tripathy, Lee J. Yao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This study empirically examines the effect of a non-traditional information source, namely a firm's blog visibility on the capital market valuation of firms. After controlling for earnings, book value of equity and other value relevant variables, such as traditional media exposure, R&D spending, and advertising expense, we find a positive association between a firm's blog visibility and its capital market valuation. In addition, we find blog visibility Grange causes trading, not vice versa. Our findings indicate that non-traditional information sources such as blogs help disseminate information and influence consumers' investment decisions by capturing their attention.

From Primordial Soup To Platform-Based Competition: Exploring The Emergence Of Products, Systems, And Platforms, C. Jason Woodard, Eric K. Clemons
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We use an agent-based NK model to explore the conditions under which standard platforms emerge among competing products. Our findings were inconclusive. We find that the usual Darwinian conditions needed for the emergence of complexity are sufficient to yield a limited reliance upon platforms with a core of common components, simply because evolution causes the population to converge on a set of products that contain combinations that "work well," yielding what we call "coincidental platform emergence." Economies of scale yield more use of common components, or "production platform emergence." Positive participation externalities initially induce the highest degree of platform emergence …
