Where Intangibles Travel: Essays On The Tax-Motivated Geography Of Innovation And Capital, Xuerui Kou

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This dissertation explores how taxation and institutional environments shape the global strategies of United States multinational enterprises (MNEs), with a particular focus on intangible assets and the cross-border allocation of innovation. Positioned at the intersection of international trade, public economics, and innovation studies, the three chapters collectively examine firm responses to international tax incentives and regulatory asymmetries.

Chapter 1 introduces the motivation and theoretical foundations of the dissertation, reviews related literature, and outlines the core research questions and empirical strategies. It highlights the increasing policy and academic interest in the geographic mobility of intangible capital, particularly in the context of …

The Product Of Property Tax: How Property Tax Affects Agricultural Production In Nebraska, James L. Kriz May 2025

The Product Of Property Tax: How Property Tax Affects Agricultural Production In Nebraska, James L. Kriz

Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The question of what level of property tax is acceptable has become an increasingly prominent question within agriculture, which is shown by the rise of interest groups and bill introduction in Nebraska. As such, this paper examines how property taxes affect Nebraska's agricultural output. The study employs a quantitative analysis of all Nebraska counties over 21 years from 2000 to 2020. This study hypothesizes that as property tax rates increase, farm outputs will decrease. The study offers a new analysis in an understudied subsection of the agriculture policy literature and points towards a new direction in which the field can …

Why Tariffs Are A Tax On American Consumers, Timothy Meyer Oct 2024

Why Tariffs Are A Tax On American Consumers, Timothy Meyer

Cornhusker Economics

Summary

The takeaway from this article should be that tariffs are a political tool, not an economic one. They do raise prices and revenue, but not as much as advertised (by either side).

At its core, Economics is the study of how scarcity is solved. That is, how limited resources are best utilized. Time and time again, Adam Smith’s idea that the invisible hand of markets would guide us to welfare-maximizing solutions, largely through specialization and trade. It’s why most of us specialize in one career and trade our hard-earned money for goods and services instead of producing them at …

Cornhusker Economics

It is never too early to begin thinking about estate planning, how you want to transfer your assets to the next generation, and how your decisions may be taxed to the next generation. Those decisions may need to be adjusted as some provisions are set to expire at the end of 2025.

Depreciation Changes Ahead, Tina N. Barrett May 2023

Depreciation Changes Ahead, Tina N. Barrett

Cornhusker Economics

When the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) was passed in 2018, a lot of time and focus was placed on all the things that were changing quickly and the things that were 5-6 years out became back burner problems. Amazingly enough, we are now at the stage of the bill where things are starting to phase out. These changes will start to impact tax returns starting in 2023 and will continue increasing taxable income through 2025. The first change is the phase out of the Bonus depreciation. This law has been on the books since 2001 (there was no …

Sales Value And Assessed Value Of Nebraska Farm Land: 1921-1934, Eleanor H. Hinman

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

How to secure just and equitable estimates of the value of farm land as a basis for taxation has always been a vexatious problem. The existing assessment law in Nebraska went into effect April 1, 1921. The present study attempts to show how the assessed valuations of farm real estate made under that law compare with the actual sales value of the farms sold during the 13 years ending March 31, 1934. The data used in this study include records of 35,753 tracts of farm land in 93 Nebraska counties sold during the 13 years ending March 31, 1934.
