Entrepreneurial Orientation In Family Firms: The Role Of Intergenerational Dynamics, Firm Size, And External Working Experience, Wai Sam Kong
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Family firms are key contributors to the global economy, yet their long-term entrepreneurial sustainability remains uncertain, particularly during intergenerational transitions. While entrepreneurial orientation (EO) has been studied widely in general business contexts, the interplay between intergenerational dynamics and EO remains underexplored in family firms. This study addresses the existing gap by methodically studying how family-specific factors influence EO, thereby contributing a novel perspective to entrepreneurship and family business research. Drawing on Constructivist Learning Theory, we conceptualise EO not as a static firm attribute but as a developmental process shaped by intergenerational interactions, governance structures, and external influences. Using a multi-method …

The Double-Edged Effect Of Ceo Maximizing Values And Corporate Litigation Risk, Qing Xu
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Based on the higher-order theoretical perspective, this study explores the nonlinear influence mechanism of CEO value maximization tendency on corporate litigation risk and its boundary conditions. Based on the survey data of 225 CEOs in the Chinese context, it is found that CEO value maximization has a significant U-shaped relationship with corporate litigation risk, which indicates that moderate value pursuit can reduce litigation risk, but excessive pursuit will increase the possibility of risk, verifying the “dual governance effect”. Environmental uncertainty, redundant resources and CEO tenure moderated the U-shaped relationship between CEO value maximization and corporate litigation risk.
The theoretical contribution …

Essays On Artificial Intelligence (Ai) In Management, Bowen Zhou
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation comprises three essays that investigate the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in business.
Chapter 1 investigates the fundamental issue of how integrating AI within R&D activities influences a firm’s market value. We developed an "AI Index" using patent data and textual analysis. Interestingly, empirical results indicate a negative correlation between AI integration and market value. However, this does not suggest that AI is an unviable avenue for exploration. Further analysis of the boundary conditions reveals that complementary assets are crucial for successful commercialisation, highlighting that while AI adoption is costly, these assets significantly enhance its market value. …

Using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation thematic model, I calculate the comprehensiveness score of corporate ESG report and examine how the score correlates with corporate debt financing cost. Based on the empirical analysis over a sample of Chinese listed A-share firms with available ESG reports. I find that more comprehensive ESG report reduces corporate debt financing cost. Specifically, an increase by one standard deviation in ESG report comprehensiveness can decrease corporate debt financing cost by 3.88%. In heterogenous analysis, I find that the effect of ESG input on reducing corporate debt cost is stronger for state-owned firms. Good financial performance of …

This essay contends that in response, the focal firm will form alliances with new partners to mitigate concerns …
Exploring Divestitures: Studies On Motivation Factors And Tools, Yun Qiao
Exploring Divestitures: Studies On Motivation Factors And Tools, Yun Qiao
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This paper explores the phenomenon of 'big company disease' commonly experienced by large companies as they expand. In Western markets, companies are more inclined to respond to the financial market by undergoing divestitures to address this issue. Divestitures simplify the company's structure, making it easier for investors to understand its value. Consequently, this facilitates companies in acquiring more capital resources and provides strong incentives for management. However, in emerging markets, divestitures are less likely due to a less developed financial market and the advantages associated with maintaining a large size and control.
The first study focuses on how listed companies …

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
In this paper, I explore the applicability of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) evaluation systems to Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs). I assess these ESG evaluation systems in terms of the overall value of Chinese SOEs and point out that these enterprises do not have their own evaluation system. Establishing an ESG system for Chinese SOEs can encourage them to disclose quantifiable indicators, thus objectively demonstrating their comprehensive ESG performance and helping to enhance their overall value. I examine the current ESG evaluation systems in detail and find that there are many problems in applying the main international evaluation systems to …
