Entrepreneurship And Social Endeavours In Singapore, Wee Liang Tan Oct 2003

Entrepreneurship And Social Endeavours In Singapore, Wee Liang Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Many people would confine entrepreneurship to the business arena and entrepreneurs to profit enterprises. In truth, entrepreneurship can extend to all aspects of human activity as defined by Raymond Kao as “the process of doing something new and/or different to create wealth for oneself and to add value to the society” (Kao, 1993). Apart from entrepreneurship that is solely “for profit” and in the business sphere, there is social entrepreneurship. Social entrepreneurship spans a continuum of community-based enterprises and entrepreneurial activities by volunteers for the good of their communities. It also includes philanthropic acts by successful individuals. While many may …

Incentive Compatibility In Multi-Unit Auctions, Sushil Bikhchandani, Shurojit Chatterji, Arunava Sen Jan 2003

Incentive Compatibility In Multi-Unit Auctions, Sushil Bikhchandani, Shurojit Chatterji, Arunava Sen

Research Collection School Of Economics

We characterize incentive compatibility in multi-unit auctions with multi-dimensional types. An allocation mechanism is incentive compatible if and only if it is nondecreasing in marginal utilities (NDMU). The notion of incentive compatibility we adopt is dominant strategy in private value models and ex post incentive compatibility in models with interdependent values. NDMU is the following requirement: if changing one buyer’s type, while keeping everyone else’s types the same, changes this buyer’s allocation then the new allocation must be relatively more attractive (or relatively less unattractive) to this buyer. We also establish a price characterization of incentive compatible mechanisms.

Competitiveness : Perceptions, Reflections And Directions, D K Banwet, Kirankumar Momaya, Himanshu Kumar Shee Sep 2002

Competitiveness : Perceptions, Reflections And Directions, D K Banwet, Kirankumar Momaya, Himanshu Kumar Shee

IIMB Management Review

Competitiveness has gained importance as a subject of study during the last decade or so. The initial stimulus came during the eighties when the US experienced an economic decline. As American firms started losing ground all over the world in significantly important industries such as automobile, shipbuilding, electronics and steel, researchers began focussing attention on country and industry level competitiveness. Given India’s low and declining ranking in the Global Competitiveness Report and the World Competitiveness Yearbook, it is imperative that academics, industrialists and policy makers make a serious study of the factors that drive competitiveness at all levels, and take …

Indian Steel Industry At The Crossroads : A Strategic Perspective, Gautam Sinha, Satyajit Jena Sep 2002

Indian Steel Industry At The Crossroads : A Strategic Perspective, Gautam Sinha, Satyajit Jena

IIMB Management Review

In the post liberalisation era, the Indian steel industry is passing through an intensely turbulent transformation, belying the rosy forecasts of the early 90s. The international recession in steel is expected to persist for at least two more years, along with competition of a high order, posing a serious threat to the Indian steel industry. Gautam Sinha and Satyajit Jena attempt to link the intrinsic and extrinsic forces operating on the Indian steel industry in order to gain a holistic understanding of it. Using performance indices such as Debt-Equity Ratio, Return on Networth, Net Sales/ Total Assets and Net Profit/ …

Reseeding Of Grazing Gastropods And Bivalves Into The Marine Environment In Western Australia, Jane Borg

Fisheries Management Papers

The Department of Fisheries does not want to embark on what is ‘new territory’ in Western Australia without a policy framework to define what is to happen, why it is to happen, and what will happen if the project does or does not succeed. This paper therefore attempts to do three things. 1. It sets in place accepted definitions of reseeding and stock enhancement within the general context of fisheries management in Western Australia. 2. It discusses the policy issues associated with reseeding grazing gastropods and bivalves into the natural environment. 3. It proposes a framework or process to be …

Off-Shore Borrowing And Guarantees By Banks: Implication For Portfolio Management., C. C. Edordu

Bullion

The subject I have been asked to reflect on is important and somewhat provocative given the potential significance of foreign capital in the development process and the implied doubt the topic raises about the capacity of banks to manage their portfolios on accessing external finance. With regard to financing tenors, it is pertinent to point out that the tenor of liabilities of most banks in Nigeria and Africa is short. The paper has focused on the various discussions about the conditions for good governance, which raises questions about the structure and functioning of the state, its relationship to society and …

The most probable near-term industry alliance and consolidation structure is described, accompanied with a probable path of evolution. These predictions have important implications for managers of strategic alliances, carriers who are currently in an alliance as well as …

Coping With Growth Transitions: The Case Of Chinese Family Businesses In Singapore, Wee-Liang Tan, Siew Tong Fock

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Families control more than half of the corporations in East Asia. The contribution of family businesses to Asia's economic growth is predicated upon successfully growing their businesses. Many family businesses in East Asia, spanning countries such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia, are Chinese owned and managed. Some claim that these businesses will never develop into full-fledged multinational enterprises because of their cultural heritage (Redding, 1990). However, some Chinese family businesses have successfully made the transition. This paper presents an in-depth study of five Chinese family businesses in Singapore that have successfully made the transition in growth and size …

Ohio’S Competitive Advantage: Manufacturing Productivity, Edward W. Hill Jan 2001

Ohio’S Competitive Advantage: Manufacturing Productivity, Edward W. Hill

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The underlying theme of Dr. Hill’s book is that manufacturing is the connective tissue of the state’s economy. This is true in two ways: The first is in terms of the distribution of employment, and the second connection is in locations of different parts of the manufacturing production process. The key to increasing incomes in all parts of Ohio is to ensure that the products made in manufacturing production platforms remain competitive, which means vigorously pursuing public policies that enhance productivity—investing in both labor and capital.

Corporate Governance And Political Ownership, David Seong Wei Lo

Student Works (2000-2009)

This paper makes an attempt to study the concept of corporate governance in a political ownership environment. It emphasizes the relationship between political objectives and governance objectives. The paper first gives a preliminary view of corporate governance and political ownership. It investigates whether political ownership will restrict the functioning of the governance mechanism. By making a case study of several privatised firms with strong political ownership, it shows that there is a strong possibility that political objectives will undermine the governance objectives without a proper check and balance system in place. There are indications that the situation is starting to …

Reform In The Electricity Supply Industry And Implementation Of A Competitive Electricity Market In Malaysia, William Kim Cheong Leong, Simon Pick Pak Seong

Student Works (2000-2009)

Over the past decade, a number of nations have restructured their electricity industries. Several nations have also significantly reduced the government's role in the ownership and management of the electricity industries both at the state and national level. The wave of changes is driven by the forces of competition; the need to make the industry more efficient and allowing customers to have choices in deciding their electricity supplier, the package of services and the associated prices that best meet their needs. A crucial element of the deregulation and reform in the electric industry is the creation of a wholesale electricity …

An initial model and propositions address the possible extension of selected leadership models beyond face-to-face (FTF) communications and into the non-face-to-face CMC environment. We (1) model relevant variables for CMC leadership, (2) briefly review the implications of selected leadership models regarding these CMC variables, and (3) extend leadership models into the CMC sphere.

Economics And Strategic Management: Bridging The Divide, Rakesh Singh Sep 2000

Economics And Strategic Management: Bridging The Divide, Rakesh Singh

IIMB Management Review

There has always been a great divide between economic theory and management theory. On the one hand, most business schools put basic economics on their curriculum and insist on compulsory courses in the subject.  On the other hand, management theorists have found economics too abstract to be useful. Economists have always tried to run clown the case study approach as lacking in rigour and have criticized management's approach of generality.
