Having been born and raised in Minnesota and now having lived nearly thirty years in Florida, I have spent most of my life on this planet in two of the fishingest states in the Union. Florida has almost as many bass fishermen as it does ways of taking money from tourists. Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, although in reality there are over 100,000 lakes in my home state.

It has been the year to remember the achievements of Jackie Robinson both in and outside of baseball. Robinson's breaking of the color line had a social significance which transcended the game of baseball. At the season opener at Shea Stadium the President of the United States recognized Jackie Robinson, and the Acting Commissioner of Baseball retired Jackie's number for all of major league baseball. Radio and TV programs have examined the events of 1947, social commentators have recalled Robinson's contributions to American life, and baseball historians have paid their tributes to this remarkable man.

Occupational Stress Levels And Perceived Stressors Of College Athletic Directors In The Midwest, Jennifer R. Venzon

Masters Theses

Increasing job responsibilities of athletic directors (ADs) may lead to higher occupational stress (OS) levels, and as a result, increased health risks. Identification of work stressors may help individuals to better prepare for their job requirements and cope with OS.

This study was designed to determine the effects of individual demographics on stress and to identify the perceived OS levels of ADs, their major stress-causing tasks and stressors. Surveys were sent to college athletic directors in the Midwest (N=72); 76.4% of the surveys were received (n=55).

Looking back to the first radio commentary I did six years ago, the subject was the U.S. Open Tennis Championships where the stellar performance that year by Jimmy Connors, especially in his late night match against Patrick McEnroe, was such a contrast with the sorry performance by the over hyped Andre Agassi. Connors has since moved on to the seniors tour while Agassi's career remains largely the story of the failure to live up to the hype and the potential.

Is it reasonable to expect those who participate in interscholastic athletics be bona fide students with a minimal commitment to success in the classroom as well as on the playing field? And should it be the function of the state legislature to guarantee that this is the case?
