This retrospective commentary looks back to the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and later decades to trace the originating ideas, intellectual influences, personalities, academic ventures and other events that spawned and shaped the International Society of Markets and Development (ISMD), the parent sponsoring organization of Markets, Globalization & Development Review (MGDR). From this rich history, this commentary hopes to inspire existing and emerging generations of authors to explore the areas of interest to ISMD and MGDR, and to contribute to this journal.

Via this introductory article, the founding editors of MGDR welcome the global readership and potential base of contributors to this journal. This essay lays out the editors views of the three momentous concepts that form the title of this journal -- markets, globalization and development -- and the intersections of these. Of course, as a journal MGDR remains open to all views of these concepts, so long they are thoroughly researched and presented in a spirit of open dialogue and discussion.

Purpose

– The purpose of this paper is to examine the differences in growth strategies – domestic and international – of manufacturing and service firms. Hardly any literature exists that empirically investigates the differences on account of the distinctive characteristics of goods and services, and such studies rarely draw from the operations management field.

Design/methodology/approach

– Multiple analysis of variance is used to analyze longitudinal data from multiple secondary sources.

Findings

Globalization is fast becoming the new trend of the hospitality industry. It remains as a highly complex and controversial concept that is not a new phenomenon. Researchers have suggested that globalization is likely an irreversible forceful process that will change the face of businesses (Mrak, 2000). In the recent Global Relocation Trends Survey conducted annually by GMAC Global Relocation Services (2007), it was reported that more than two-thirds (69%) of the multinational corporations surveyed reported an increase to the number of international assignments.
