In 2005, a partnership between the South Coastal Workforce Investment Board, the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association, Massasoit Community College and the Urban Harbors Institute (UHI) of the University of Massachusetts Boston, developed and distributed a survey focused on the status, needs and future challenges faced by marine businesses in the South Coastal region of Massachusetts. The Urban Harbors Institute analyzed the responses and prepared this report to present the results.

This study examines the relationship between insider trading and market liquidity (spread and depth) of NASDAQ-100 stocks. Tests on an intraday sample of sell trades show no evidence of cross-sectional association between the width of the spread and insider trading, but detect some widening of the spread after the fact. Overall, our results provide mixed evidence on the ability of NASDAQ dealers to unravel informed order flow and adjust spreads accordingly. Their short-term behavior suggests an inability to detect insider trading and widen spreads, but their behavior over time suggests that dealers may attempt to recover what they apparently lose …

In a world of competition, loyalty to a particular brand has a significant role in the behaviour of economic agents and the outcome of markets. The objective of this thesis is to examine the microeconomics of brand loyalty from three dimensions: consumer learning by using markets with switching costs, and uncertainty in product quality. The various methodologies used are based on extensions, modeling, and integrative analysis of some works in the literature, most notably those of Klemperer, Pepall, Thisse, Gabszewicz, Schwartz and Wilde, and Tirole. In her essay on The Ambiguity of the Right to Communicate in the Age of Convergence, Aliaa Dakroury frames the issue mediation in terms of media ownership and control. The question asked in the title -- Who Owns the Medium Owns the Message? -- in its rhetorical rather than literal form, indicates the skepticism with which Dakroury approaches too narrow a vision of determination. In the terms of his case study, this means questioning the apparent incommensurability of the economic convergence of multi-national media conglomerates and the right to communicate. Item generation has received only cursory attention in the research literature, despite the fact that it seems obvious that poorly written items will result in poor psychometric properties of measures. In this paper, we review the literature on item generation, develop a typology of threats to construct validity, and evaluate five commonly used
organizational research measures with respect to typology. Our results demonstrate that the sampled measures have significant problems that may represent threats to construct validity. recommendations for improved item generation practice are offered.

This paper describes a survey of all American AACSB-accredited schools of business. The survey gathered information concerning work experiences (internships or cooperative education) required or offered in business curricula. Of the targeted schools, 133 responded. Results are presented regarding internship characteristics (prerequisites, student compensation, and course credit); assessment of students' performance (grading. learning objectives, academic and work components of grade determination); and administrative issues (site visits, release time, and faculty compensation). Of the 133 respondents. 12 require work experience of all majors, 14 require it of some majors, 88 offer but do not require, and J 9 offer no work …

The Free Trade Area Of The Americas: Assessing The Potential Of Hemisphere-Wide Free Trade, Andrea M. Smiens

In December of 1994, the United States and the other thirty-three heads of state from the democracies in the western hemisphere met in Miami to discuss the creation of a hemispherewide free trade area, known as the Free Trade Area of the Americas. Negotiations for the free trade agreement were set for completion by January of 2005, with implementation by December 31, 2005. Ten years later, the idealistic ambitions seem to have dimmed and the western hemisphere seems as far from agreement as ever. Amidst security concerns, conflicting interests and vastly different levels of development, is there any hope?
