Variations In Organization Science : In Honor Of Donald T Campbell Edited By Joel A C Baum And Bill Mckelvey, Sage, 1999, Pp 452, Price: $ 39. 95., Abhoy K Ojha

IIMB Management Review

Organisation science, as a field of study, is relatively young. Although the study of human behaviour has a long history, and studies examining human behaviour in organisations were prevalent in the early twentieth century, the field as we know it today has emerged after World War II, particularly during the 1960s. As a result, like any other discipline in its early stages of evolution, organisation science has many competing paradigms jostling for dominance. Organisational ecology (also known as population ecology) is one of the few paradigms that have had a significant influence on the knowledge of organisations.

Organisational Orchestra : Structures And Processes Interface, Neelesh Hundekari Mar 2001

Organisational Orchestra : Structures And Processes Interface, Neelesh Hundekari

IIMB Management Review

Organisational structures do not exist in isolation. They presume, depend on, and influence several organisational variables. These include processes (communication, goal setting, conflict resolution, socialisation, leadership building, strategic planning, supporting, team working), behaviour, values, rituals, climate, authority (with which the role holders are imbued) and people (competence, confidence, interpersonal skills, leadership, perceptions about
others). Structure designers tend to ignore this vital reciprocal relationship quite often, leading to ineffective structures and unhappy human beings. An attempt has been made in this article to map the relationship between
organisational structures and processes.

Leadership : Myths And Realities Robert J Allio, 1999, New Delhi, Tata Mcgraw-Hill, Pp 237, Price: Rs 325 (Cloth)., K Unnikrishnan Nair

IIMB Management Review

There has been a spate of books on leadership in the recent past, and most of them promise far more than they deliver, conceptually and practically. Allio's book, however, comes as a pleasant surprise. Conceptually, Allio is rooted well. He doesn't consider leadership as an isolated phenomenon. Nor does he swear by any particular theory, theorist, approach, or paradigm. Leadership, for him, covers both the process of influencing as well as the quality of the influencer. Particularly, Allio emphasises that this process of leadership is a participative process, where, in accordance with the contextual needs, both the followers and the …

IIMB Management Review

For a researcher, teacher, student or any other person interested in managerial and organisational cognition, this book presents a single window interface with the articles that appeared in Organization Science between 1991 and '94. In particular, the researcher will be thrilled to encounter a rich variety of research methodologies in the book. Teachers of advanced courses on MOC could use this book as one of the anchors in their courses. Hence, it is a must for libraries in all management schools, and universities with departments of psychology, social psychology and cognitive psychology and perhaps sociology, especially the ones with explicit …

Organizations Evolving By Howard A Ldri Ch, Sage Pub Lications, London, 1999, Pp Xv + 413, Price:£ 55.00 (Cloth), £ 17.99 (Paper)., Ishwar Dayal

IIMB Management Review

The book examines processes by which organisations come into being and achieve coherence as entities. It also discusses the issues surrounding organisational transformation and change. The understanding of these sociopsychological processes is necessary to enable managers to look at organisations as 'living' entities, to understand, maintain and develop organisations, and to manage change.

Managing Corporate Culture: Leveraging Diversity To Give India A Global Competitive Edge By Karl Ulrich, R S Chaudhry And Kishan S Rana, Macmillan India, 2000, Pp 199, Price: Rs 260., Vijay Padaki

IIMB Management Review

The 90s witnessed a transformation of Indian business and industry that was at the same time exciting and frightening. The economic reforms, although implemented in graded installments, had a ready response, matched with good business sense. They made an impact on several fronts, not the least important one being the increasing interest and confidence in other countries to partner Indian businesses for mutual benefit. On the other hand, there were the obvious difficulties of growing too suddenly, too
fast and, as some observers felt, too late. The rapidity of growth carried the distinct possibility of growing recklessly rather than responsibly. …

Organisational Development Revisited, Vijay Padaki Jun 2000

Organisational Development Revisited, Vijay Padaki

IIMB Management Review

The liberalisation in the Indian economic environment in the 90s has been accompanied by a quiet but firm demand for better management in all spheres of work. The liberalisation process has also opened up the marketplace for all kinds of goods and services, not excluding packaged management systems. We can expect a lot of management being marketed in the new dispensation more suppliers, more products, more brands, more aggressive selling and, lest we forget, more dumping. The consumer needs help in the supermarket to make informed choices. In the management bazaar, too, the consumer could do with some guidance.

Evaluative Inquiry For Learning In Organizations: By Hallie Preskill And Rosalie T. Torres, New Delhi: Sage Publications, 1999., Lakshmanan Prasad

IIMB Management Review

As a Professor of Organisational Behaviour, I frequently meet persons doing surveys in their organisations on employee attitudes, satisfaction, and so on. Because of their lack of experience, these are usually not very well executed. The questionnaires used to collect data are generally inadequate, making it difficult to draw meaningful conclusions. By the time they approach me after the fact, it is too late to rectify matters. Therefore, I have often wished to recommend a book that could help individuals who would like to do their own surveys and interventions in their organisations. This book by Preskill and Torres should …

Managing From The Heart: Unfolding Spirit In People And Organizations: By Arun Wakhlu, New Delhi: Response Books, 1999., C Manohar Reddy

IIMB Management Review

For long, books on management have focused primarily on knowledge, skills and performance and have not shown much concern for the soul or the well-being of the people and society at large. Most HRD professionals and management trainers, caught in the paradigm of scienticism, have shied away from addressing the issues of the soul and the spirit in spite of the silent cry of many managers and other members of organisations seeking ways of integrating the spirit with work.

Power And Influence In Organizations: Edited By Roderick M Kramer And Margaret A Neale, New Delhi: Sage Publications, 1998., Abhoy K Ojha

IIMB Management Review

Power and Influence in Organizations examines the role of social influence in organisations. It is a compilation of edited versions of papers presented at a conference at Stanford University. Unlike some other collections of essays from conferences that are subsequently released as books, the articles in this volume display a very high degree of academic depth and rigour. Most, if not all, articles could easily meet the requirements of the refereeing process of a premier journal in the field of organisational studies.

Positioning Hr To Create Value, Y Sriram Sep 1999

Positioning Hr To Create Value, Y Sriram

IIMB Management Review

The HA function today seems to vacillate along a broad spectrum. There are companies where the function has contributed conclusively to reaching business objectives, but in the majority of organisations it is relegated to the administrative routine. While it is true that the expectations from HA are often vague and undefined, the HA professional too must introspect on his/her role in the positioning of the function in organisations today. The best students in management schools do not opt for HA and most HA professionals who have done well for themselves early in their career want to change slots as HA …

Dimensions Of Tqm In Indian Organisations, Vijay G Vancheswar, Purnima Mathur Sep 1999

Dimensions Of Tqm In Indian Organisations, Vijay G Vancheswar, Purnima Mathur

IIMB Management Review

The paradigm shift from an inward production-led philosophy to the outward customer-oriented approach has given an impetus to the concept of total quality management in Indian organisations. To provide an insight into the practices of TOM in India, Vijay Vancheswar and Purnima Mathur studied six large manufacturing organisations, two each from the multinational, private and public sectors. Cutting across sectors, it emerged that apart from focusing on customer needs and improving the quality of products, facilitating employee involvement and ownership through a participative process and stock options where feasible, providing a just and fair climate which encourages the free flow …

Need Fulfilment, Leadership Styles And Effectiveness: A Study Of Two Indian Organisations, Reeta Mohan, Rajeev Mohan Sep 1999

Need Fulfilment, Leadership Styles And Effectiveness: A Study Of Two Indian Organisations, Reeta Mohan, Rajeev Mohan

IIMB Management Review

Need fulfilment of an individual in an organisation is very important, because the success of the organisation depends upon the level of motivation of its members, and the appropriateness of the leadership pattern in a particular situation. An extremely motivated group of employees can help the organisation sustain itself even in the worst environmental conditions. On the other hand, its success might be jeopardised if its employees are not motivated toward work. Working on the theory that the needs and values of the leaders may have considerable influence on the type of leadership behaviour they choose, and the fact that …

Road Map To Transformational Leadership, Asha Bhandarkar, Pritam Singh Mar 1999

Road Map To Transformational Leadership, Asha Bhandarkar, Pritam Singh

IIMB Management Review

The search for role models expresses not only the deep rooted desire to follow, but also the inherent desire to lead. The need for great heroes and transforming leaders like Gandhi and Mandela is felt much more strongly in the contemporary world. The model of leadership in existing literature has been used primarily to depict the process of managing rather than the process of transforming and leading. Asha Bhandarkar and Pritam Singh arrive at blueprints for leadership by studying the lives and work of transformational leaders
