Being In The Know: Socio-Epistemics And The Communicative Constitution Of A Management Team, Jonathan Clifton
Being In The Know: Socio-Epistemics And The Communicative Constitution Of A Management Team, Jonathan Clifton
Organization Management Journal
Increasingly, organizational research is taking the linguistic turn in social sciences seriously. Consequently, the central role of communication in the constitution of the organization is also finding greater acceptance. Using conversation analysis as a research methodology and transcripts of naturally occurring talk as data, the purpose of this article is to add to this growing body of research and to explicate how orientation to epistemic rights talks the hierarchy of the organization into being. Findings indicate how the negotiation of rights to have and to display status-based knowledge of head office index the discursive identities of knowing participants, which enacts …
A Case Of Ability And Disability: What Managers Must Know About The Ada, Elizabeth A. Corrigall, Carol Cirka
A Case Of Ability And Disability: What Managers Must Know About The Ada, Elizabeth A. Corrigall, Carol Cirka
Organization Management Journal
This teaching exercise addresses a relatively neglected area of diversity, the employment of persons with disabilities. In the first part of the two-stage exercise, students are required to make a hiring decision based on a case that includes candidates who are disabled. This decision raises issues concerning the legal and ethical responsibilities of a hiring manager and uncovers some of the myths concerning candidates with disabilities. The case is subsequently used to anchor a lecture on essential information every manager should know about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and disability in the workplace. As a result of this exercise, …
Pizza, Pizza, Pizza: A Competitive Strategy Exercise, Norman T. Sheehan
Pizza, Pizza, Pizza: A Competitive Strategy Exercise, Norman T. Sheehan
Organization Management Journal
While business students are typically comfortable identifying and extrapolating trends uncovered during competitive analyses, they often fail to take the Red Queen Effect into account when formulating new competitive strategies. This competitive strategy exercise employs Kim and Mauborgne’s (2005) strategy canvas to help students to anticipate rivals’ potential reactions and then develop new competitive strategies for firms competing in highly competitive markets. The exercise concludes with key takeaways as to how students may best develop and evaluate new competitive strategies. Student feedback indicates that students found the exercise useful, as 97% of students (n = 69) recommended that instructors at …

Ongoing concerns about a perceived disconnection between management education and management practice and the limited skill base of business school graduates are evident in the literature. These problems have been looked at through various lenses, and the professional model of education has shown promise in addressing perceived problems with business schools and their graduates. Using concepts from the sociology of the professions including jurisdiction, professional identity, and the nature of professional work, this article explores recent criticisms of management education and addresses the stages and issues involved in migrating to a model of education that mirrors that used in the …

Personality And Group Performance: The Importance Of Personality Composition And Work Tasks, Amit Kramer, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Tiffany D. Johnson
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We examine whether group members’ Big Five personality composition (variability, minimum, and maximum) affects the group’s performance. We employed an experimental design where participants were paid based on their performance in two different group-based experimental tasks: an additive task (where group performance is based on the sum of efforts of all group members) and a conjunctive task (where group performance is based on the performance of the weakest group member). Results indicate that variability in extraversion is positively related to group performance on the additive task but not on the conjunctive task. Conversely, neuroticism maximum score is negatively related to …

Leading Mindfully: Two Studies Of The Influence Of Supervisor Trait Mindfulness On Employee Well-Being And Performance, Jochen Reb, Jayanth Narayanan, Sankalp Chaturvedi
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This research examines the influence of leaders’ mindfulness on employee well-being and performance. We hypothesized that supervisors’ trait mindfulness is positively associated with different facets of employee well-being, such as job satisfaction and need satisfaction, and different dimensions of employee performance, such as in-role performance and organizational citizenship behaviors. We also explored whether one measure of employee well-being, psychological need satisfaction, plays a mediating role in the relation between supervisor mindfulness and employee performance. We tested these predictions in two studies using data from both supervisors and their subordinates. Results were consistent with our hypotheses. Overall, this research contributes to …

Follow Me! Followership, Leadership And The Multigenerational Workforce, Ronald M. Johnson
Follow Me! Followership, Leadership And The Multigenerational Workforce, Ronald M. Johnson
HCBE Theses and Dissertations
This research was designed to develop an understanding of today's multigenerational workforce with respect to a preferred styles or characteristics of followership and leadership. Specifically this research sought to determine if there was a relationship between an individual's generational cohort and the preferred styles of leadership and followership, as measured by implicit theories of leadership and followership. Therefore, this study draws upon generational theory (Mannheim, 1952), implicit theories of leadership (Epitropaki & Martin, 2004) and implicit theories of followership (Sy, 2010). The changes in the composition of the US workforce which have occurred, and which will continue to occur in …

The Impact Of Impression Management Over Time, Mark Bolino, Anthony Klotz, Denise Daniels
SPU Works
The purpose of these studies was to investigate how the repeated use of impression management (IM) tactics is related to supervisor perceptions in newly formed supervisor-subordinate dyads. Two studies were conducted – a lab study in which participants evaluated a confederate who performed an accounting task while using different types of IM across five trials, and a field study examining the IM tactics of new employees and their supervisors’ ratings of likability and performance at two points in time. In the lab study, the repeated use of ingratiation had an increasingly positive effect on performance ratings, whereas repeated apologies had …

Owner-Manager Separation And The Structure Of It Governance In Small Business, Jeffrey S. Saffer
Owner-Manager Separation And The Structure Of It Governance In Small Business, Jeffrey S. Saffer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Small business owners and small business managers tend to favor different information technology (IT) governance structures. Such differences can lead to ineffective management and control of IT in small businesses. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the extent and nature of the association between owner-manager separation in small businesses and the structure of IT governance in the businesses. Agency theory formed the theoretical framework of this study. Data were collected using a web-based survey and randomly sampled 3,697 small business owners and managers located in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Chi-square statistics indicated no significant association between owner-manager …

Improving Professional Skills Through Adversity: A Phenomenological Study Of Mergers And Acquisitions, Randy Anita Rutledge
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
Company mergers and acquisitions often create tremendous conflict for employees because they force them into a spiral of organizational change. In this environment, employees are challenged with redefining themselves within a new organization. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to discover and explain the particular conflict experiences of professional employees who experienced the merger and acquisition of their company. A phenomenological research study was conducted to discover and describe the shared conflict experiences of professional employees during the merger and acquisition of their consulting firm. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 17 self-identified professional employees. It was found through …

Discourses Of Inter-Expertise Creative Collaborative Performance In The Terra Nova Of Dublin’S Science Gallery, Diane Tangney, Olivia Freeman, Brendan O'Rourke
Conference papers
Discourses of creativity tempt us with promises of treasures from terra incognito (Cox, 2005). Creativity is central to the enterprise culture of our age and there is a dark side to such temptations (O'Rourke, 2010;Osborne, 2003; Rehn & De Cock, 2009). Creativity’s role in the enterprise culture may mean that like other aspects of enterprise culture, though many are called, few are chosen (Ainsworth & Hardy, 2008). This paper presents preliminary findings on data deriving from a larger project investigating creativity on the interactions between some special people that might be expected to be particularly creative (discipline experts from different …

In this study, we explored the relationship between changes in resident health outcomes, practitioner communication patterns, and practitioner perceptions of group effectiveness within a quality-improvement collaborative of nursing home clinicians. Survey and interview data were collected from nursing home clinicians participating in a quality-improvement collaborative. Quality-improvement outcomes were evaluated using US Federal and State minimum dataset measures. Models were specified evaluating the relationships between resident outcomes, staff perceptions of communication patterns, and staff perceptions of collaborative effectiveness. Interview data provided deeper understanding of the quantitative findings. Reductions in fall rates were highest in facilities where respondents experienced the highest levels …

What do individual association members think about their association membership? What do they value and what do they want to see associations provide in the future? This case study uses face-to-face interviews and focus groups with 12 international Ph.D. students enrolled in a Public Administration and Management program at a major university in Texas to provide answers to these questions. The research offers an understanding of how people from diverse cultures view professional associations. The Ph.D. students were also asked about the importance of their association as a means for building ties and making connections with others, and about volunteering. …
The Effects Of Trust And Perceived Supervisor And Organizational Support On Employees' Attitudes And Behavior, Rebecca Lauren Burnheimer
The Effects Of Trust And Perceived Supervisor And Organizational Support On Employees' Attitudes And Behavior, Rebecca Lauren Burnheimer
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Previous research has identified perceived supervisor support (PSS; Eisenberger et al., 1986) as a major contributing factor in the development of perceived organizational support (POS; Eisenberger et al., 1986), which has been found to lead to higher levels of positive work attitudes and behaviors. However, researchers have not yet explored the ways in which employees come to feel supported by their supervisors (i.e., how does PSS develop?). Based on social exchange theory (Blau, 1964; Thibaut & Kelley, 1959), the current study assessed the relation of employees' trust in their supervisor to PSS. This study also attempted to replicate the relationships …

A Multifoci Model Of Workplace Incivility And Deviance : Examining The Moderating Role Of Prosocial Orientation, Wisanupong Potipiroon
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Despite the scholarly interest in workplace incivility in the field of organizational behavior, public administration (PA) scholars have paid much less attention to this timely and relevant topic. Based on a unique sample of 401 individuals (nested in 83 work units) employed in a public organization in Thailand, the present study seeks to address this void by examining whether different sources of workplace incivility (i.e., supervisors, coworkers and customers) will have differential effects on different types of employee deviant behaviors (i.e., deviance directed towards the organization, supervisors, coworkers and customers). Based on a multifoci and target-specificity framework, the present study …

Segregation And The Adaption Of Community-Based Organizations To Multiethnic Immigration In Newark And Jersey City : 1990-2010, Joseph R. Gibbons
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
As we move into the 21st century, racial and ethnic segregation remains a dominating force in American Cities. Segregated black and Hispanic communities are known to suffer not only from a lack of resources, compared to non-Hispanic white neighborhoods, but also from a distinct sense of parochial isolation. At the same time, nonprofit community-based organizations (CBOs) have gained an increasingly central role in providing basic services to the urban needy. As of yet, there has been no systematic study to explore how segregation impacts the operation of CBOs. This dissertation employs a mixed methods research strategy to examine CBOs in …
Status Of And Future Recommendations For Country-Of-Origin Research, Katie Post
Status Of And Future Recommendations For Country-Of-Origin Research, Katie Post
Honors Projects
This research investigates whether country-of-origin (COO) cues have an effect on consumer purchase intentions, based on a review of prior literature published in the EBSCO and Summon databases. The findings of these articles show that COO cues do not, on their own, have an effect on consumer purchase intentions; but do have some effect on consumer attitudes/feelings toward the product. Future research has much to offer in terms of identifying whether COO cues have an effect on consumers’ purchase intentions for specific products, or specific types of products.

Organizational Development Consulting: A Study Of Expert Consultants' Key Strategies, Mona Vosoughi
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The present study was conducted to capture the collective voice of expert organizational development consultants. Until now, very few studies have been conducted that take into account the collective voices of organizational development consultants. More specifically, the purpose of the present study is to explore and gain a deeper understanding of the approaches expert organizational development consultants use throughout their engagement with their clients in an attempt to add value to and enhance organizational capacity. To understand the process used by this distinct group of leaders, phenomenological qualitative inquiry was the methodology used to conduct this study. Data were collected …
Developing A Method For Measuring "Working Out Loud", Dennis E. Pearce
Developing A Method For Measuring "Working Out Loud", Dennis E. Pearce
Theses and Dissertations--Finance and Quantitative Methods
Enterprise social network software platforms (ESNs) are increasingly being deployed in firms across almost every industry as a means of fostering employee collaboration. Although benefits in increased productivity, innovation, and employee engagement are highly touted, there is a high failure rate of these deployments. This often occurs because (1) there is a misapplied focus on technology adoption rather than adoption of the employee behaviors that are ultimately required to obtain those benefits, and (2) it is unclear what those behaviors are and how to measure them.
“Working Out Loud” is one possible framework for understanding and measuring the behaviors necessary …
Savings Account For Microenterprise, Meghan Jarow
Savings Account For Microenterprise, Meghan Jarow
Honors College Theses
Will bundling savings accounts with loans increase the effectiveness of microfinance as a tool for alleviating poverty? Microfinance is the practice of offering small loans to poor people in developing countries. The development of this practice into a poverty dimishining, self-sustaining business won Muhammad Yunus a Nobel Prize in 2006. Today, there are thousands of microfinance institutions (MFIs) serving millions of people in developing countries. However, there is recent evidence that these loans do not help reduce poverty, and may do as much ahrm as good.
In truth providing credit to the poor may not be enough to eliminate poverty. …

This study examines corruption attitudes and norms in government hospitals in the Philippines. It tests a culture-building model that advocates communication of desired values, leadership role modelling, employee role modelling, alignment of systems and structures, training and evaluation, and reinforcement. Results reveal components that influence corruption attitudes and norms. Communication predicted individual attitudes or acceptability of corrupt acts. Leadership, systems, and controls predicted the prevalence of corrupt acts. Employee role modelling predicted both acceptability of and the prevalence of corrupt acts. In addition, there is a positive relationship between individual attitudes and organisation norms reinforcing the dyadic relationship between the …
