An Empirical Test Of Staw And Ross Prescriptions For The Management Of Escalation Of Commitment Behavior In Organizations, Kenneth J. Dunegan, S L. Barton, D Duchon Jul 1989

An Empirical Test Of Staw And Ross Prescriptions For The Management Of Escalation Of Commitment Behavior In Organizations, Kenneth J. Dunegan, S L. Barton, D Duchon

Management And Labor Relations

Tests two major prescriptions of Staw and Ross about the management of escalation behavior in organizations. Since these prescriptions are primarily based on research using students in controlled settings, the efficacy of the prescriptions was tested in the context of a real, functioning organization. The results provide conditional support for separating initial decision responsibility from subsequent responsibility as a means of reducing escalation behavior. However, the findings did not support a reduction of project failure risk as a means of minimizing escalation of commitment to a failing course of action.

The Importance Of Management Philosophy To The Success Of Pay-For-Knowledge Systems: An Empirical Test, Timothy P. Schweizer Aug 1988

The Importance Of Management Philosophy To The Success Of Pay-For-Knowledge Systems: An Empirical Test, Timothy P. Schweizer

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, pay-for-knowledge compensation systems have received serious attention from practitioners and organizational researchers. Some have hypothesized that the specific mechanics of pay-for-knowledge systems are critical to success while others have suggested that contextual factors determine whether or not these systems will be successful. Empirical research has not been very supportive of these hypotheses, however.

Another hypothesis is that management philosophy is important to the success of pay-for-knowledge systems. The purpose of this study is to test this hypothesis by addressing three questions: 1) Are the components that make up management philosophy related to the successes experienced by companies …

Goal Importance, Self-Focus And The Goal Setting Process, Chuck R. Williams, John R. Hollenbeck Jan 1987

Goal Importance, Self-Focus And The Goal Setting Process, Chuck R. Williams, John R. Hollenbeck

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

In this study we examine the role played by perceived goal importance and self-focus in the goal-setting process. More specifically, this study tests the interactive hypotheses that (a) task performance is a function of goal level, self-focus, and perceived goal importance; (b) goal level is a function of perceptions of past performance, self-focus, and perceived goal importance; and (c) perceptions of past performance are a function of actual past performance, self-focus, and perceived goal importance. Hierarchical regression analysis, using a sample of 88 retail salespersons, revealed empirical support for the first two hypotheses. Specifically, the variables described by control theory …

Turnover Functionality Versus Turnover Frequency: A Note On Work Attitudes And Organizational Effectiveness, Chuck R. Williams, John R. Hollenbeck Jan 1986

Turnover Functionality Versus Turnover Frequency: A Note On Work Attitudes And Organizational Effectiveness, Chuck R. Williams, John R. Hollenbeck

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Tested whether work attitudes, widely praised as predictors of turnover frequency (i.e., the number of separations), are also useful predictors of turnover functionality (i.e., the nature of separations). Measures on job satisfaction, organizational commitment, job involvement, motivation to turnover, and turnover frequency and functionality were obtained from 112 retail salespersons. Results indicate that (a) the traditional measure of turnover frequency overstates the detrimental effects of turnover on organizational effectiveness, in that 53% of the turnover was functional and (b) turnover functionality, which emphasizes the performance levels of stayers and leavers, is unrelated to work attitudes. Findings suggest that organizations should …

A Managerial Planning Model: An Application To The Farm-Cultured Catfish Industry In Determining The Characteristics Of Processed Farm-Cultured Catfish Consumers In Little Rock And North Little Rock, Arkansas, Argus Kenneth Pippin May 1975

A Managerial Planning Model: An Application To The Farm-Cultured Catfish Industry In Determining The Characteristics Of Processed Farm-Cultured Catfish Consumers In Little Rock And North Little Rock, Arkansas, Argus Kenneth Pippin

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of the study were: (1) to evaluate the processed farm-cultured catfish business in its embryonic stage during 1968 in terms of a systematic managerial planning model (MPH); (2) to focus on the managerial strategy of market segmentation and determine the relationships between the number of processed farm-cultured catfish sales and selected economic and socio-economic determinants or consumer market behavior. From the evaluation of the processed farm-cultured catfish business as it existed in 1968, it was suggestive that the planning process was not implemented thoroughly. Several areas exhibited weaknesses or unfavorable influence that were deterrents to the success of …

Consumer Attitude Analysis For Three Albuquerque Mortuaries, Paul A. Smyer Jr. May 1971

Consumer Attitude Analysis For Three Albuquerque Mortuaries, Paul A. Smyer Jr.

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

An attitude is the predisposition of an individual to evaluate some symbol or object or aspect of his world in a favorable or unfavorable manner. Attitudes are developed during a process of interaction with the environment and they usually show an evaluative personal reaction. Consumer attitudes toward an individual firm develop in the context of this interaction. The firm by its actions in the administration of its business aids the consumer in his formation of attitudes toward that firm. Objective methods of observation were employed to identify user attitudes toward three mortuaries in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The data was statistically …

Motivating Employed Professionals, Kenneth M. Kamerman Jun 1970

Motivating Employed Professionals, Kenneth M. Kamerman

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

This study is directed to the problem of determining the properties of a task motivation method for employed professionals that will increase their productivity without creating employe-supervisor problems and without adding administrative burdens to the organization. The second problem is to identify a task motivation method which possesses the properties identified in the solution to the first problem. A descriptive-analytic approach to solve the first problem involves a review of human relations observations and conclusions bearing on motivation of employed professionals. The solution to the second problem identifies the contingency management motivation method, used in progressive education settings, as a …

Satisfaction, Dissatisfaction, And Self-Actualization Among Top Level Employees Of The City Of Albuquerque - An Appraisal Of Organizational Climate, Vern H. Curtis May 1970

Satisfaction, Dissatisfaction, And Self-Actualization Among Top Level Employees Of The City Of Albuquerque - An Appraisal Of Organizational Climate, Vern H. Curtis

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

Having problem areas and potential problem areas identified within one's organization would be welcomed by most, if not all, administrators. It was the purpose of this thesis to identify and isolate any potential problem area or areas concerning high level personnel of the City of Albuquerque; also to establish any relationship between self-actualization and Rensis Likert’s organizational climate model. The primary tools for determining problem areas were a self-actualization test and Likert’s semantic differentials which characterize an organization's climate. Each department in the City was compared to the City in total to determine any differences with respect to those two …

Although the rate of return on cereal investment appears to be relatively high and attractive, there are substantial barriers to entry. Industrial organization theory (i.e .. scale economy, …

An Attempt To Make A Comparative Investigation Of Domestically And Internationally-Oriented Organizational Structures In Terms Of Organizational Barriers To International Marketing Situation Communications, Douglas T. Mears Dec 1969

An Attempt To Make A Comparative Investigation Of Domestically And Internationally-Oriented Organizational Structures In Terms Of Organizational Barriers To International Marketing Situation Communications, Douglas T. Mears

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

It is quite evident that global marketing has expanded in fantastic proportions during the past fifteen years. Current estimates show that sixty per cent of all United States’ enterprises with more than one hundred employees are now marketing their products and services abroad. Since all indications are for even a larger expansion during the next fifteen years, it is important that a company adopt a global strategy to administer successful marketing program in foreign communities. To properly administer any program, it should be recognized that communications play a vital part in the operation of an efficient organization at home and …

An Application Of The Factor Analytic Approach To The Construction Of An Overall Business Activity Index, Jay Quigley Butler May 1969

An Application Of The Factor Analytic Approach To The Construction Of An Overall Business Activity Index, Jay Quigley Butler

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

Business economists attempting to determine and to describe the changes in the business activity of metropolitan areas and other geographic sections are seriously limited in their work by the absence of a satisfactory Overall Business Activity Index (OBAI). Although there are several methods for constructing such a composite index, this thesis examines the application of factor analysis to the construction of an OBAI. The difficulty of applying this statistical technique has been in developing a set of weights for combining the extracted factors into an OBAI. Among the objectives of such an overall index are that it should preserve the …
