Ethics In Business : An Overview, Rishikesha T Krishnan
Ethics In Business : An Overview, Rishikesha T Krishnan
IIMB Management Review
Finding a model to ensure ethical behaviour will be as elusive as the alchemists’ quest for a way of converting base metals into gold. More so, in India where the atmosphere is far from conducive to ethical behaviour. Yet, heightened public opinion and assertion by citizens’ bodies can eliminate, corruption.
Business Ethics : The Mindtree Perspective, S Janakiraman
Business Ethics : The Mindtree Perspective, S Janakiraman
IIMB Management Review
Right at its inception, says S Janakiraman, one of the co-founders of MindTree Consulting, it was realised at MindTree that implanting ethical corporate values was absolutely essential for long-term strategic success. While their mission statement — ‘Deliver business-enabling solutions and technologies by creating partnerships with our customers in a joyous environment for our people’—is the unifying force between the business and its customers, their DNA—Imagination, Action and Joy — nurtures and aligns people, and builds the emotional and psychological ecology of the organisation. Their value statement —‘We are a Caring, Learning, Achieving, Sharing and Socially responsible organisation (CLASS)’— connotes integrity …
Business Ethics : The Indian Reality, Rajneesh Krishna, Atul Tandan
Business Ethics : The Indian Reality, Rajneesh Krishna, Atul Tandan
IIMB Management Review
Business ethics in an organisation originates from an interplay of its structure and culture, the compulsions of its business category and the culture of the societal system surrounding it. In India, business ethics have evolved from the origins of industry in the last quarter of the 19th century, through its consolidation during the British Raj based on the values of the European Renaissance: individualism, equality, democracy, liberalism and centrality of work. The Western industrial organisation was implanted in India, where the dominant values were holism (performance of group over individual), hierarchy and continuity. Work was not a tool to realise …

The usefulness of any research is dependent upon how well the group studied represents the group about which decisions are to be made or conclusions drawn. That is, it depends upon how well the sample reflects relevant characteristics of the population. When it is possible to study every member of that group there is no problem, for on these occasions we can easily calculate the exact attribute (parameter) of interest for our population.
For example, if we were interested in determining the average number of gallons of gasoline sold to customers at our service station yesterday, we …
Why Can't We Wait (To Spend) And The Law Of Unintended Consequences: Potential Negative Impact On Minority Employees From Well-Intentioned Organizational Compensation Practices, James R. Jones
Marketing and Management Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
In this time of increasing uncertainty about business viability and stability, many organizations are looking to gain control of their "bottom line" by strengthening the link between organizational outcomes and employee rewards. Long gone are the days of steadily and automatically increasing worker salaries as a hoped-for method of expanding productivity. Indeed, there is a school of thought that suggests that automatic pay increases act as a "demotivator" for many individuals. The more common approach currently is to utilize incentives (i.e., additional compensation/rewards given for performance beyond normal expectations) as a way of enhancing employee work motivation, thereby leading to …
Job-Related Ethics Of Four-Star Hotel Employees In Kuala Lumpur, Syed Sabeer Ali Ahmed Khan
Job-Related Ethics Of Four-Star Hotel Employees In Kuala Lumpur, Syed Sabeer Ali Ahmed Khan
Student Works (2000-2009)
This research aims to investigate the job-related ethical beliefs of four - star hotel employees in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The results show that the fourdimensional factors model as suggested by Vitell and Muncy (1992) can explain hotel employees' job-related ethics. The result revealed that employees working in departments, which have direct contact with hotel guests such as Food & Beverage, have higher tolerance for unethical behaviours. Significant differences were observed when analyzing the demographic variables (i.e. sex and education level) with the four factors identified including: no harm; unethical behaviours; actively benefiting; and passively benefiting. There were no significant differences …

Marketing and Management Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
“The examples cited here reinforce the need for theoreticians and practitioners alike to consider the difficulties that may arise from viewing people through a single lens.” As far back as 1968, with the findings of the Kerner Commission, there have been reports of "two Americans, separate and unequal." Indeed, the recent commission on race formed by President Clinton reached much the same conclusion. While three decades separate the work of two groups, the main inference drawn is strikingly consistent with regard to race. There is a persistent chasm in how majority group and minority group members view and are viewed …
Self-Construal Orientation: Validation Of An Instrument And A Study Of The Relationship To Leadership Communication Style, Craig E. Johnson
Self-Construal Orientation: Validation Of An Instrument And A Study Of The Relationship To Leadership Communication Style, Craig E. Johnson
Faculty Publications - College of Business
The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to test rigorously the measurement equivalence of the Independent and Interdependent Self-Construal Scales (Gudykunst et al., 1994) across three cultural groups and for males and females, and (b) to determine the comparative amount of varianc,e in self-perceived leadership communication style that can be predicted by self-construal orientation, culture, and biological sex. College students from the United States (n = 224), New Zealand (n = 218), and the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan (n = 228) responded to the self-construal scales and the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (Hemphill & Coons, 1957). Results of …
Understanding Research On Values In Business: A Level Of Analysis Framework, Bradley R. Agle, Craig B. Caldwell
Understanding Research On Values In Business: A Level Of Analysis Framework, Bradley R. Agle, Craig B. Caldwell
Scholarship and Professional Work - Business
Researchers in all management specialties have discussed and investigated the important role values play in personal and organizational phenomena. However, because research on values has been performed in a wide range of social science disciplines and at different levels of analysis, much of thiswork has been uninformed by other work and is neither well integrated nor systematized, resulting in a great deal of confusion concerning the topic. This article attempts to add order and clarity to this area of research by proposing a framework of values research based on level of analysis and by cataloguing and reviewing the vast theoretical …

Ethical Issues In A Networked Environment, Kristen G. Sallberg
Theses and Dissertations
The research objective was to provide a preliminary understanding of how USAF computer users perceive the ethical considerations of computer networks and how the USAF is addressing ethical issues of networked environments. A survey was undertaken to explore questions of ethics in the use of information networks. The literature review explored issues of ethics in the private sector and USAF guidance regarding use of official government resources. The sample population consisted of military members stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Ohio. The responses regarding certain attitudes about behaviors and actions in a networked environment were consistent overall. A significant difference …

Company Boards And Directors: Creating An Effecting Board, Colin J Coulson-Thomas
Company Boards And Directors: Creating An Effecting Board, Colin J Coulson-Thomas
IIMB Management Review
Is the board of directors the heart and soul of a company as it should be, ideally, or merely an 'old boy's club' which rubber stamps decisions taken by the CEO? Can it be a meaningful instrument of corporate governance? Various aspects such as the creation and running of an effective board, the difference between directing and managing, the interface between the board and the CEO, including the public sector perspective on the issue have been discussed by academicians and senior corporate executives.

IIMB Management Review
Interest in corporate governance has increased dramatically in recent months, spurred by the increased activism of regulatory bodies, the rise of the institutional investor, the takeover moves in the corporate world and the advent of investigative reporting in business journalism. The question is whether inherited governance structures and conventions remain appropriate and what can be done to make them effective. Problems arise because of ineffective governance and the myopic view of the market. Companies chronically underperform because management is too responsive to short term pressures to increase profits. Understanding what affects the quality of corporate governance requires a careful consideration …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Personality Characteristics And Ethical Sensitivity In Business, Ronald A. Ortiz, David Petrillo
A Study Of The Relationship Between Personality Characteristics And Ethical Sensitivity In Business, Ronald A. Ortiz, David Petrillo
Theses and Dissertations
This research establishes a significant relationship between ethical sensitivity (the perception that a situation requires ethical consideration), and personality type, as characterized by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). A simple random sampling from the membership of the National Contract Management Association yielded 466 responses. The sample was analyzed by segmentation into government (181) and industry (285) respondents. The average ethical sensitivity response of 5.28 out of seven is considered high. Differences in perceptions of ethical sensitivity were significant among government and industry, and among ten scenarios often faced by contracting professionals. In the majority of scenarios, the government segment reported …
