Supply Base Reduction Efforts Regarding Laboratory Reagents Within Hospital Networks, Kelsie L. Hughes
Supply Base Reduction Efforts Regarding Laboratory Reagents Within Hospital Networks, Kelsie L. Hughes
Theses and Dissertations
The Air Force Medical Operations Agency currently has contracts for laboratory reagents at approximately 75 Air Force medical treatment facilities; however, each medical facility has a separate means used to procure these reagents. AFMO Awants to know how other hospital networks are purchasing their reagents and see if it could be applied to the Air Force. The goal of this research was to use the case study methodology to showcase how other hospital networks applied supply base reduction to laboratory reagent purchases. We examine what drove the organizations to begin supply base reduction, how they transitioned to a smaller supply …
Implication Of Additive Manufacturing On United States Air Force Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron Supply Chain, Shane R. Veitenheimer
Implication Of Additive Manufacturing On United States Air Force Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron Supply Chain, Shane R. Veitenheimer
Theses and Dissertations
Additive manufacturing is mandated as a technology for the Department of Defense to consider to implement. Previous efforts have shown positive potential for additive manufacturing (AM) for United States Air Force Civil Engineering but do not explore the economic impact. This research examines implementation by investigating a specific Explosive Ordnance Disposal repair part supply chain in the current combat theater of operations. A framework to capture the basic financial savings AM could realize was developed to aid AM decision making. This research established a Scenario Planning and Monte Carlo simulation based framework to produce an estimated annual cost for a …
Benchmarking Dod Use Of Additive Manufacturing And Quantifying Costs, Ryan C. Crean
Benchmarking Dod Use Of Additive Manufacturing And Quantifying Costs, Ryan C. Crean
Theses and Dissertations
Additive Manufacturing (AM), or three-dimensional (3D) printing as it is commonly referred to, is a rapidly developing technology that has the potential to revolutionize the way that firms develop and produce parts, as well as how they manage their supply chains. AM allows organizations to "print" prototypes, parts, tools, fixtures, tooling and a variety of other items at their production location. This can remove long lead times and high inventory levels for one-time or rare items. This research examines current AM use within the military services. Additionally, this study details the costs associated with fielding different levels of AM capability, …
Improving Minuteman Iii Maintenance Concepts, Daniel W. Crouch
Improving Minuteman Iii Maintenance Concepts, Daniel W. Crouch
Theses and Dissertations
Since the end of the Cold War, the Air Force has sought out efficiencies across multiple processes to transform into a cost-effective force. However, processes applicable to the Minuteman III (MM III) weapon system have only recently seen efforts to increase effectiveness. The purpose of this research is to investigate whether the use of third generation maintenance concepts could benefit the sustainment of the MM III through its planned retirement around 2030. Primary and secondary sources outlining the history of the strategic missile force and its current state were collected. Themes from each era were analyzed using Prospect Theory as …
A Condition Based Maintenance Approach To Forecasting B-1 Aircraft Parts, Joshua D. Defrank
A Condition Based Maintenance Approach To Forecasting B-1 Aircraft Parts, Joshua D. Defrank
Theses and Dissertations
United States Air Force (USAF) aircraft parts forecasting techniques have remained archaic despite new advancements in data analysis. This approach resulted in a 57% accuracy rate in fiscal year 2016 for USAF managed items. Those errors combine for $5.5 billion worth of inventory that could have been spent on other critical spare parts. This research effort explores advancements in condition based maintenance (CBM) and its application in the realm of forecasting. It then evaluates the applicability of CBM forecast methods within current USAF data structures. This study found large gaps in data availability that would be necessary in a robust …

The Influence Of Supply Chain Quality Management Practices On Quality Performance: An Empirical Investigation, Anabela Soares, Ebrahim Soltani, Ying-Ying Liao
Plymouth Business School
Purpose The extant literature highlights the notable lack of a consensus among operations and supply chain management scholars regarding the theoretical underpinnings and associated empirical evidence for the performance impact of supply chain quality management (SCQM) practices on quality. The purpose of this paper is to redress this imbalance in the literature through empirical examination of the relationship between SCQM practices and quality performance outcomes. Design/methodology/approach In accordance with the research aim, a quantitative approach was adopted, and a multi-item scale Web-based survey was designed to collect primary data. A total number of 325 questionnaires were collected from a sample …

Understanding Risk Management For Intentional Supply Chain Disruptions: Risk Detection, Risk Mitigation, And Risk Recovery, Scott Duhadway, Steven Carnovale, Benjamin Hazen
Understanding Risk Management For Intentional Supply Chain Disruptions: Risk Detection, Risk Mitigation, And Risk Recovery, Scott Duhadway, Steven Carnovale, Benjamin Hazen
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
Strategies to mitigate supply chain risk tend to treat disruptive events as homogenous, despite having different causes and requiring different risk management strategies. We develop a framework to understand effective risk management strategies by considering whether a disruption was caused by an intentional or inadvertent act and whether the source of the disruption was endogenous or exogenous to the supply chain. Based on exploring evidence from risk management strategies for specific disruptions, we find that risk detection is important for both intentional and inadvertent disruptions, while effective risk management practices differ in terms of risk mitigation (relational versus process based …

Why Trade Credit Financing Is More Important Than Developing Large Customer Relationships For Video Game Suppliers, Jocelyn D. Evans, Dominique G. Outlaw
Why Trade Credit Financing Is More Important Than Developing Large Customer Relationships For Video Game Suppliers, Jocelyn D. Evans, Dominique G. Outlaw
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
Trade credit extended to suppliers in the video game industry does not serve as a commitment device for large customers in determining which vendors to make relationship-specific investments in. Suppliers of video games are better off investing in relationships with trade creditors than seeking out large customers. The costs of large customer relationships are lower sales growth and less long-term debt leverage. Also, large customers don’t form relationships with suppliers in this industry, which has high research and development expenditures nor do they facilitate economic viability with regard to continued independent operational performance or listing on a stock exchange.
Pitfalls Of Over-Legalization: When The Law Crowds Out And Spills Over, Mark Kawakami
Pitfalls Of Over-Legalization: When The Law Crowds Out And Spills Over, Mark Kawakami
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
While some academics argue that enforcing voluntary corporate codes of conduct with private law backed sanctions can improve the working conditions of marginalized workers in the global supply chain, there are various risks associated with this "legalization" process. Relying on evidence from the fields of sociology, psychology, and evolutionary anthropology, this contribution will discuss how external incentives like threats of legal sanctions can actually be detrimental to the intrinsic motivations of companies that want to be socially responsible. This paper will also analyze how the crowding out effect and the spillover effect that come with legalizing otherwise voluntary norms could …
Corporate Codes In The Varieties Of Capitalism: How Their Enforcement Depends On The Differences Among Production Regimes, Gunther Teubner
Corporate Codes In The Varieties Of Capitalism: How Their Enforcement Depends On The Differences Among Production Regimes, Gunther Teubner
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
Globalization has reinforced the conflicts among the varieties of capitalism. The colliding units are not just nation states, but transnational production regimes, which cut through national boundaries. The conflicts lead global corporate codes, which are developed by international organizations, to take different directions when they are concretized on the enterprise level. They will be differently enforced according to whether they are located in Liberal Market Economies (LME), adapted to the New Sovereignty of enterprises, or in Coordinated Market Economies (CME) with greater components of social welfare state and economic democracy.
Different patterns of enforcement emerge particularly when the courts have …

Adrift In The Sea: The Impact Of The Business Supply Chain Transparency On Trafficking And Slavery Act Of 2015 On Forced Labor In The Thai Fishing Industry, Katharine Fischman
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
Hundreds of thousands of men and boys are trafficked and enslaved on long-haul fishing boats in the waters off the coast of Thailand. These captives endure physical and mental abuse, inhumane working conditions, meager sustenance, and little sleep as they are forced to catch fish used in products such as cat food. This Note will focus on whether a proposed Act-the Business Supply Chain Transparency on Trafficking and Slavery Act of 2015 (BSCT)-would impact the issue of forced labor linked to the seafood industry in Thailand, and particularly the portion of the industry that supplies fish used in American brand …
Corporate Codes As Private Co-Regulatory Instruments In Corporate Governance And Responsibility And Their Enforcement, Jan Eijsbouts
Corporate Codes As Private Co-Regulatory Instruments In Corporate Governance And Responsibility And Their Enforcement, Jan Eijsbouts
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) codes have gained a prominent role as tools in self-regulation for companies to establish their basic values, norms, and rules that condition the conduct of directors, managers, employees, and-increasingly-of suppliers. This development must be seen in the light of two important paradigmatic changes in the concepts both of CSR and corporate governance. The former is no longer purely voluntary and the latter has become inclusive of CSR, each with far-reaching consequences for the raison d'itre and the place and function of the codes in the smart regulatory mix governing corporations. While the codes were based originally …

The current research compares two demographically diverse universities regarding their respective awareness of the study abroad programs (SAPs) offered by their school. The study focuses on each sample’s awareness of SAP opportunities (i.e., as offered by their own institution) as well as each group’s opinion of the level of university administrator effort aimed at promoting the SAP offerings at each school. The authors analyzed whether student perceptions of the level of administrator support affected student expectations regarding SAP participation prior to graduation. Given the different socio-economic characteristics of the two student samples used in the study, the authors provide additional …
Managing Production-Inventory Systems With Scarce Resources, Saif Benjaafar, David Chen, Rowan Wang
Managing Production-Inventory Systems With Scarce Resources, Saif Benjaafar, David Chen, Rowan Wang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We consider the problem of managing production in a production-inventory system where a firm is subject to an allowance (a limit) on either the amount of input it can use or the amount of output it can produce over a specified compliance period (in addition to being subject to a constraint on the production capacity). Examples of such settings are numerous and include those where limits are placed on the use of scarce natural resources as input or on the amount of waste or harmful pollution generated by production as output. We study the structure of the optimal production policy …

Role Of Private Maritime Security Companies (Pmscs) In Sensitive Shipping Management, Helen Tung
Role Of Private Maritime Security Companies (Pmscs) In Sensitive Shipping Management, Helen Tung
MARENER 2017
The role of Private Maritime Security Companies (PMSCs) peaked at the height of piracy threats mid 2008. Since then there has been much development of soft guidance from ISO code, BMP4 practice and further discussions of how best to ensure safety in shipping particularly in relation to the high seas. PMSCs work along side important stakeholders in the shipping industry, including the Captain, seafarers, insurers, shipowners, charterers amongst others; what if shipments include sensitive materials? What guidance is there for PMSCs to ensure further safety measures or do the current soft guides provide sufficient guidance. This topic is in line …
The International Business Risk Of Terrorism: A Pragmatic Framework For Assessing Its Impact On The U.S.-Based, Small- To Medium-Sized Enterprise’S Supply Chain Operations, Scott A. Lemons
The Hilltop Review
Purpose - Subject paper examines the international business risk of terrorism’s impact on the focal firm’s supply chain operations, as proliferated by the acceleration of globalization, via a fundamental review of pertinent country- and firm-level considerations shaped by global environmental factors. Subsequently, a managerial risk assessment and mitigation planning framework is presented for the supply chain executive’s pragmatic use.
Design/methodology/approach – Broad evaluation of contemporary viewpoints precedes a risk assessment and mitigation planning framework from the supply chain executive’s point-of-view.
Findings – While observed research found the probability of the risk of terrorism to be low, the severity (impact) of …
Governance Interactions In Sustainable Supply Chain Management, Errol Meidinger
Governance Interactions In Sustainable Supply Chain Management, Errol Meidinger
Transnational Business Governance Interactions Working Papers
“Supply chains” are a major site of transnational business governance, and yet their dynamics and effectiveness are usually more assumed than interrogated in regulatory governance discourse. The very term “chain” implies a more determinist and simplistic understanding of supply relationships than is empirically supportable. Supply chains in practice are complex, dynamic, and highly variable networks. Based on peer-group presentations by over 60 supply chain professionals, this paper analyzes sustainable supply chain management practices in terms of the interactions conceptions of the Transnational Business Governance Interactions framework. It discusses possible refinements of the framework and suggests that sustainable supply chain management …

State-Led Approaches To Electronic Waste Management In The U.S.: A Study Of Stakeholder Involvement In Take-Back Legislation Efficiency, Ashley Elizabeth Westgate
Bard Center for Environmental Policy
Information technology has proliferated over the past two decades, and waste from electronics represents the fastest growing waste stream in the world. The production and disposal of electronics, from cradle to grave, pose critical threats to human health and the environment. The management of electronic, or e-waste, streams poses a particular set of challenges for solid waste management, hazardous waste management, and economic development in the United States. As e-waste accumulates, state governments, municipalities and private landfills are refusing to accept the responsibility for its disposal. To address this problem, the federal and state governments must find a safe and …
Supply Chain Coordination With Two-Part Tariffs Under Information Asymmetry, Chongqi Wu, Kunpeng Lu, Tianqin Shi
Supply Chain Coordination With Two-Part Tariffs Under Information Asymmetry, Chongqi Wu, Kunpeng Lu, Tianqin Shi
Faculty Publications
Supply chain coordination literature indicates that two-part tariff contracts cannot coordinate a supply chain with a supplier and a retailer under information asymmetry, but can coordinate the channel under full information, while leaving the retailer zero profit. Motivated by the practice of Costco Business Centres, we incorporate customer heterogeneity, near-saturated retail market and asymmetric information into a stylised model. The retailer has the knowledge of customer heterogeneity while the supplier does not. The supplier, on the other hand, designs a menu of two-part tariffs for the retailer to choose from. We have found that two-part tariffs can coordinate the supply …

Liner Companies’ Container Shipping Efficiency Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Nicholas Campaniello
Liner Companies’ Container Shipping Efficiency Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Nicholas Campaniello
Undergraduate Review
The liner shipping industry moves products around the world. There are thousands of container ships circling the globe at all times, making the global economy possible. Liner shipping companies ship anything that can fit into a cargo container. The standard containers measure 20 feet in length by 8 feet in width or 40 feet in length by 8 feet in width. According to Alphaliner (2015), there are at least 100 linear shipping companies in the world. This study will evaluate the efficiency of different-sized liner shipping companies using Data Envelopment Analysis: it will consider operational aspects and will only include …
