Order Batching With Time Constraints In A Parallel-Aisle Warehouse: A Multiple-Policy Approach, Soondo Hong, Andrew L. Johnson, Brett A. Peters Jan 2014

Order Batching With Time Constraints In A Parallel-Aisle Warehouse: A Multiple-Policy Approach, Soondo Hong, Andrew L. Johnson, Brett A. Peters

13th IMHRC Proceedings (Cincinnati, Ohio. USA – 2014)

A commitment of delivery time is critical in some online businesses (De Koster, 2003). An important challenge to meeting customers’ needs is timely order picking which is also relevant to worker safety, item freshness, overall operational synchronization, and reduced overtime. We analyze an order batch picking situation where a trip is constrained by vehicle capacity and must be completed within a specified time. We develop a model which partitions orders to batches to minimize the total travel time such that each trip meets the orders’ time constraints and capacity limit, and also determines a suitable operational policy for each batch. …

Designing Retail Facilities To Improve Product Exposure, Pratik J. Parikh, Corinne Mowrey Jan 2014

Designing Retail Facilities To Improve Product Exposure, Pratik J. Parikh, Corinne Mowrey

13th IMHRC Proceedings (Cincinnati, Ohio. USA – 2014)

A retail facility should effectively engage consumers during their shopping trips if they want to convert demand into purchases. Unfortunately, the complexity of the retailing environment and lack of scientific tools often results in gut-feel approaches experimented in practice. A key factor to retail design often alluded to, but rarely analyzed, is product exposure to the travelling shopper. We define the extent of the shopper's field of vision in order to determine the actual exposure of products experienced by a traveling shopper. In so doing, we can explore the effect rack orientation has on product exposure. Our main contributions include …

Modular Design Of Physical Internet Transport, Handling And Packaging Containers, Benoit Montreuil, Eric Ballot, William Tremblay

13th IMHRC Proceedings (Cincinnati, Ohio. USA – 2014)

This paper proposes a three‐tier characterization of Physical Internet containers into transport, handling and packaging containers. It first provides an overview of goods encapsulation in the Physical Internet and of the generic characteristics of Physical Internet containers. Then it proceeds with an analysis of the current goods encapsulation practices. This leads to the introduction of the three tiers, with explicit description and analysis of containers of each tier. The paper provides a synthesis of the proposed transformation of goods encapsulation and highlights key research and innovation opportunities and challenges for both industry and academia.

An Experimental Study Of The Impact Of Warehouse Parameters On The Design Of A Case-Picking Warehouse, Russell D. Meller, Lisa M. Thomas

13th IMHRC Proceedings (Cincinnati, Ohio. USA – 2014)

The best design for a warehouse is based on its ability to meet the demands placed on the warehouse, which are typically characterized by warehouse parameters like the order , inventory requirements, etc. Consequently, these parameters should be considered in the design process. In this paper we characterize the design of a case-picking ware- house with design variables and identify the warehouse parameters that have the greatest impact in setting the values of these variables. With our analysis, the search for the optimal design can be reduced by limiting the design space considered.

Optimization Of Skus' Locations In Warehouse, David Sourek, Vaclav Cempirek Jan 2014

Optimization Of Skus' Locations In Warehouse, David Sourek, Vaclav Cempirek

13th IMHRC Proceedings (Cincinnati, Ohio. USA – 2014)

Many companies, which deal with warehousing, optimize their warehouses. The main business of these companies is to offer to customers the warehousing services. It is possible to note that these companies are specialized in warehousing. On the other hand, we can find companies, which have as the main business the selling of goods to customers. These companies use the warehouses too but in a little bit different way. The arrangement of their warehouses can be very unsuitable and convenient for optimization. Our paper is focused on optimization of stored goods’ locations based on market basket analysis. The solution of this …

Grid Facilities Design: Dynamic Modular Deployment Of Production, Handling And Storage Resources, Suzanne Marcotte, Benoit Montreuil Jan 2014

Grid Facilities Design: Dynamic Modular Deployment Of Production, Handling And Storage Resources, Suzanne Marcotte, Benoit Montreuil

13th IMHRC Proceedings (Cincinnati, Ohio. USA – 2014)

To survive and thrive in a fast-moving environment, facilities must be designed to show adaptability, flexibility and robustness. As some facilities are depicted by heavy and sophisticated equipment costly and hard to displace, others are composed of moveable workstations with highly flexible workers. In most cases, the trade-off is between the cost of redeploying the resources and the excessive cost of material handling and storage incurred by an inefficient deployment of the resources. We propose a design strategy based on (1) conceiving and designing the facility as a stable grid of modules, (2) dynamically deploying production, storage and handling resources …

Modeling And Optimization Of Radio Frequency Identification Networks For Inventory Management, Atipong Suriya, Jose D. Porter Jan 2014

Modeling And Optimization Of Radio Frequency Identification Networks For Inventory Management, Atipong Suriya, Jose D. Porter

13th IMHRC Proceedings (Cincinnati, Ohio. USA – 2014)

Stock loss and out-of-stocks are outcomes of poorly designed inventory management systems and can lead to significant revenue losses. Inventory management systems (IMSs) based on radio frequency identification (RFID) have the potential to minimize these losses if they are properly designed and deployed. However, the placement of RFID readers to support IMSs is often done on a trial and error basis which is time consuming and results in less than optimal coverage. A methodology to find the optimal location and number of RFID readers in a warehouse facility to ensure a desired level of radio frequency signal coverage was developed …

Real-Time Dock Door Monitoring System Using A Kinect Sensor, Hector J. Carlo, Cristina Pomales- Garcia, Yeiram Martinez Jan 2014

Real-Time Dock Door Monitoring System Using A Kinect Sensor, Hector J. Carlo, Cristina Pomales- Garcia, Yeiram Martinez

13th IMHRC Proceedings (Cincinnati, Ohio. USA – 2014)

This study presents a proof of concept where a single Microsoft Kinect sensor is used for automated monitoring of a dock door in real-time. The proposed system will automatically and in real-time: (1) detect when an object breaches the dock door perimeter, and its corresponding speed and direction, (2) count the number of pallets loaded/unloaded to/from a trailer, (3) record the loading/unloading time of each load, and (4) reconstruct an image of every loading/unloading trip at a dock door, irrespectively of the material handling travel speed and direction. Particular emphasis is given to discussing how to extend the proposed concept …

An Experimental Investigation Of Outsourcing Through Competition, Ehsan Elahi, Roger Blake Jan 2014

An Experimental Investigation Of Outsourcing Through Competition, Ehsan Elahi, Roger Blake

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

Our research uses laboratory experiments to examine the theoretical results of competition between suppliers in an outsourcing setup. We consider a supply chain in which a single buyer needs to outsource the manufacturing of a product among N potential suppliers. The buyer allocates demand to suppliers not on the basis of price, but rather on service. We analyze the levels of service suppliers will decide to provide when competing on three different criteria specified by the buyer. For the first, suppliers compete by providing the buyer a specific service level (fill-rate), and for the second by maintaining a specific quantity …

Two Stage Procurement Processes With Competitive Suppliers And Uncertain Supplier Quality, Yue Jin, Jennifer K. Ryan, Walter Yund Jan 2014

Two Stage Procurement Processes With Competitive Suppliers And Uncertain Supplier Quality, Yue Jin, Jennifer K. Ryan, Walter Yund

Department of Supply Chain Management and Analytics: Faculty Publications

This paper considers a sourcing problem faced by a manufacturer who outsources the manufacturing of a product to one of several competing suppliers, whose cost and quality capabilities are unknown. We consider a two-stage sourcing process in which the first stage is the qualification stage, while the second stage is the supplier selection stage. In the first stage, the manufacturer exerts effort to learn about the quality level of each of the suppliers and then must determine the set of qualified suppliers, subject to some tolerance for error. In the second stage, the manufacturer runs a price-only procurement auction, in …

The Long-Term Impact Of Rail Abandonment On Manufacturing In Arkansas, John D. Ozment, Ahren Johnston Jan 2014

The Long-Term Impact Of Rail Abandonment On Manufacturing In Arkansas, John D. Ozment, Ahren Johnston

Journal of Transportation Management

Despite the fact that railroads are an important part of the U.S. economy, the number of rail carriers and miles of rail lines have been declining. The resulting lack of transportation alternatives could have a negative impact on local manufacturing. This study examined the effects of rail abandonment in Arkansas between 1980 and 2000 by comparing measures related to manufacturing in counties that did not have or had lost some rail service with those in counties that had rail service and had not lost any. The analysis revealed no meaningful differences, suggesting the lack of any adverse economic impacts due …

Key Advertising Components And Media Channels For Recruiting Long Haul Drivers, Marla B. Royne, Carol C. Beinstock, Tracy Anna Cosenza Jan 2014

Key Advertising Components And Media Channels For Recruiting Long Haul Drivers, Marla B. Royne, Carol C. Beinstock, Tracy Anna Cosenza

Journal of Transportation Management

This research examines how trucking companies can develop effective advertising media and messages for reaching and recruiting qualified long distance long distance truck drivers. Long distance truck driver candidates seem most interested in competitive pay, paid vacation, a weekly payment schedule (along with direct deposit), assigned equipment, 24/7 dispatch, a large volume of hub group freight, and flexible home time. To reach this audience and its needs, we suggest advertisements emphasizing these benefits be placed on the Internet and social media sites, as well as in selected professional magazines frequented by truck drivers searching for jobs.

The Role Of Logistics Alliance Orientation On Forming The Alliance Structure: A Conceptual Framework, David M. Gligor, Mary C. Holcomb Jan 2014

The Role Of Logistics Alliance Orientation On Forming The Alliance Structure: A Conceptual Framework, David M. Gligor, Mary C. Holcomb

Journal of Transportation Management

Little is known about how a firm decides what type of relationship to develop with a LSP and how the type of arrangement affects the service quality performance. This article proposes a conceptual framework to better understand how shippers decide what type of relationship to develop with a logistics service provider (LSP) within the strategy- structure-performance theoretical framework. A systematic literature review is used to develop a conceptual framework that considers the association between the firm’s strategic perspective on outsourcing and the resulting effect on the alliance structure. The concept of a logistics alliance orientation (LAO) is introduced to examine …

Status Of And Future Recommendations For Country-Of-Origin Research, Katie Post Jan 2014

Status Of And Future Recommendations For Country-Of-Origin Research, Katie Post

Honors Projects

This research investigates whether country-of-origin (COO) cues have an effect on consumer purchase intentions, based on a review of prior literature published in the EBSCO and Summon databases. The findings of these articles show that COO cues do not, on their own, have an effect on consumer purchase intentions; but do have some effect on consumer attitudes/feelings toward the product. Future research has much to offer in terms of identifying whether COO cues have an effect on consumers’ purchase intentions for specific products, or specific types of products.

Dock Appointments Program & Loading Efficiency Executive Summary, Adrian Duncan Jan 2014

Dock Appointments Program & Loading Efficiency Executive Summary, Adrian Duncan

Master of Science in Logistics & Supply Chain Management Capstone Executive Summaries and Projects

NewPage Corporation houses a total of seven facilities in the Central Wisconsin region. Implementation of a Dock Appointment Program, which requires carriers to adhere to a prescheduled loading appointment time, will allow NewPage to level out its preloading and liveloading volume throughout the day, thus mitigating the spikes that occur in liveloading and preloading volumes. Having a scheduled dock appointment will allow NewPage mill and logistics personnel to produce, plan, stage and load against a prescheduled driver arrival time, thus increasing efficiency in all of these processes. In addition, required dock appointments will eliminate bottlenecks and drastically decrease driver wait …

Resource Security: Competition For Global Resources, Strategic Intent, And Governments As Owners, A. Erin Bass, Subrata Chakrabarty Jan 2014

Resource Security: Competition For Global Resources, Strategic Intent, And Governments As Owners, A. Erin Bass, Subrata Chakrabarty

Marketing and Management Faculty Publications

We develop a resource security perspective by examining the resources that multinational firms acquire when investing abroad. Firms can acquire resources to increase power and decrease dependence for long-term security (exploration) or acquire resources for relatively shorter-term gains and consumption (exploitation). We find state owned enterprises (SOEs) acquire resources for exploration, and pay more for these resources than non-state owned enterprises (NSOEs). We contribute to the literature by suggesting that long-term resource security is of immediate importance to SOEs and their home countries, that ownership influences resource acquisitions, and investments can be a safeguard for the SOE’s home country’s future.

Modeling And Analysis Of Value-Based Healthcare Delivery, Tannaz Mahootchi Jan 2014

Modeling And Analysis Of Value-Based Healthcare Delivery, Tannaz Mahootchi

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Healthcare reforms are emerging in order to control the increasing healthcare expenditures and to improve the health outcomes. In the context of the Value-based Healthcare Delivery reform, Michael Porter defines value as a patient's health outcome per dollar spent. Porter's proposal is comprised of organizing care around a medical condition (or around patient segments for primary care). Specifically, care will be provided by a dedicated, multidisciplinary team of providers, an Integrated Practice Unit (IPU). The IPU is jointly accountable for the health outcomes of patients and the costs of providing care during the full cycle of care.

The main objective …

Sustainability Strategies In Supply Chain Management, Amit Arora Jan 2014

Sustainability Strategies In Supply Chain Management, Amit Arora

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Managers no longer view sustainability of organizations only in terms of profitability and economic growth of shareholders. Various competitive pressures are forcing managers to broaden the scope of sustainability to include explicit environmental and societal objectives too. These pressures are emanating from various sources such as depleting natural resources, regulatory policies from governments, erratic weather cycles, demanding customers and brand damage due to exposure about poor working conditions in supplier factories located in other countries. This dissertation consists of three essays that contribute to the practice and literature of strategic sustainable supply chain management by examining its four aspects: measure, …

Moving Beyond Boycotts: Strategies For Shared Responsibility In The Collegiate Apparel Industry, Scott Kelley Jan 2014

Moving Beyond Boycotts: Strategies For Shared Responsibility In The Collegiate Apparel Industry, Scott Kelley

Mission and Ministry Publications

the factory collapse at Rana Plaza in Bangladesh is a painful reminder that labor issues in the apparel industry are abundant and troubling. Catholic Colleges and Universities (CCUs) are confronted with the reality that many apparel manufacturers can operate in stark contrast to the vision of economic justice found in Catholic social thought (CST). In response, activists on CCU campuses have demanded that CCUs boycott apparel manufacturers that they believe to be in violation of their school’s values. While activism can draw much needed attention to problems in the industry, it can be a problematic response. While CST offers principles …
