U.S. Motor Carrier Hours Of Service Regulations: Their Impact On Carrier Profitability And Productivity, Ahren Johnston
Journal of Transportation Management
This paper discusses the history of hours of service regulations for U.S. motor carriers and investigates the changes to individual carrier profitability and productivity from the last major change to those regulations in 2003. The results of the analysis indicate that operating ratio worsened and sales per employee improved, and return on assets and return on equity were unchanged due to hours of service changes. The implications of these results given the recent changes to hours of service regulations in 2011 are also discussed.

An Empirical Cross Cultural Assessment Of A Logistics/Supply Chain Management Typology, Michael A. Mcginnis, Ali Kara, John E. Spillan
Journal of Transportation Management
This manuscript compares the three dimensions (Process Strategy, Market Strategy, and Information Strategy) of the Bowersox Daugherty (1987) logistics strategy typology among five disparate countries by integrating the findings of previous empirical research. The appropriateness of the three Bowersox/Daugherty dimensions when combined into the construct Overall Logistic Strategy (OLS) are assessed. The role of OLS impact on Organizational Competitiveness (COMP) through two intervening variables LCE (Logistics Coordination Effectiveness) and CSC (Customer Service Commitment) is evaluated. Welfare Issues With Gestation Crates For Pregnant Sows

Throughout nearly the entirety of their 112-115 day pregnancies, most breeding sows in the United States are confined in gestation crates (also known as sow stalls)—individual metal enclosures so restrictive that the pigs cannot turn around. Crated sows suffer a number of significant welfare problems, including elevated risk of urinary tract infections, weakened bones, overgrown hooves, lameness, behavioral restriction, and stereotypies. Due to concerns for the welfare of intensively confined sows, legislative, industry, and corporate policies are increasingly phasing out the use of gestation crates.

This study examined whether observers could distinguish between cattle that were exposed to various road transport conditions: Experiment 1 compared a manipulated flooring treatment (non-grip flooring, NG) with a control transport event (grip flooring, G) and Experiment 2 compared a manipulated driving style (stop-start driving, SS) with a control transport event of smooth, continuous (C) driving. The behavioural expression of cattle was assessed through the process of Qualitative Behavioural Assessment (QBA), and these assessments were tested for correlation with various physiological parameters. Farm Animal Husbandry Collection
The objective of this cross-sectional study was to describe the housing, feeding management, and characteristics (parity and stage of lactation) of cows on commercial automatic milking system (AMS) dairies and their associations with the standing and lying behavior patterns and milking activity (frequency and yield) of lactating dairy cows. Thirteen AMS herds were enrolled in the study, with an average herd size of 71 ± 30 (mean ± SD; range: 34 to 131) lactating cows. Volatility in dairy commodity markets has become a major concern for many in the dairy supply chain and is likely to remain so in the future. Changes to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) over the past decade have more closely aligned EU and World prices and their associated volatilities. The aim of this paper is to measure volatility at farm level in Ireland over time, identify possible reasons for the increased volatility and identify ways of reducing volatility. The objective of this paper is to provide both a research and teaching introduction to business analytics in the context of both current and prospective perspective of the business analytics domain. تشير الدراسة التالية إلى صورة المؤسسة كنتيجة لمختلف التفاعلات الداخلية و الخارجية للأطراف المشاركة في العملية الإنتاجية ، في إطار التطرق لمختلف الأدوار و النتائج التي تمارسها المؤسسة على هده الأطراف و مشاركة كل منها في تحقيق النجاعة في معناها الكلي . ترتكز الدراسة التالية على فرضيات المصالح المشتركة بين المؤسسة و الأطراف المتدخلة في العملية الإنتاجية داخليا و خارجيا بالطريقة التي تجعل كل طرف يحاول إقناع الأطراف الأخرى بوجهة نظره مما يجعل مفهوم المسؤولية الاجتماعية للمؤسسات يتجسد بطريقة عملية يمكن أن تحقق نتائج أكثر ايجابية بالنظر إلى تكاليفها

In this paper, we describe a novel approach to corporate involvement in on-farm assessment, driven by the desire to provide a service for dairy producers and to create a vehicle for engagement on issues of dairy cow welfare. This program provides producers with feedback on animal-based (including gait score, leg injuries, and lying time) and facility-based (including freestall design, bedding practices, feed bunk design and management, and stocking density) measures that can be used to better address their management goals.
