In this study, women’s fashion brands are examined to see if big companies are taking advantage of age targeting through their social media posts. How Youtube Health Vloggers Influence Viewer Compliance: The Interplay Between Vlogger Characteristics, Parasocial Interaction, And Viewer Characteristics, Md Nazmus Sakib

Theses and Dissertations

Drawing on the notion of parasocial interaction (PSI) theory (Horton and Wohl, 1956), this dissertation provides a framework to demonstrate how YouTube health vloggers can influence viewer compliance intention toward a prescribed health behavior (i.e., weight-loss diet to lose weight). Initially, drawing on the discounting principles of attribution theory (Kelly, 1973), physical attractiveness stereotype (Eagly et al., 1991), and the black sheep effect (Marques and Yzerbyt, 1988), the interaction effects of three vlogger characteristics on viewer PSI experience were conceptualized and examined (Study 1). Then by using a scenario-based experiment, viewer PSI experience with the vlogger was manipulated (high vs. …

Customer Deviance: A Framework, Prevention Strategies, And Opportunities For Future Research, Paul W. Fombelle, Clay M. Voorhees, Mason R. Jenkins, Karim Sidaoui, Sabine Benoit, Thorsten Gruber, Anders Gustafsson, Ibrahim Abosag

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The phrase the "customer is always right" assumes that customers provide universal benefits for firms. However, in recent years, customer deviance is on the rise and the academic literature has provided little insight into the drivers of deviance, the actual behaviors, and strategies for how managers can better manage a customer base that cannot be classified as universally benign. This article addresses customer deviance ranging from classic examples like shoplifting to engaging in hostile anti-brand behaviors on social media or even breaking established norms such as trespassing in stores after closing hours. In an effort to spur new research into …

Don’T Cut Your Marketing Budget In A Recession, Nirmalya Kumar, Koen Pauwels Aug 2020

Don’T Cut Your Marketing Budget In A Recession, Nirmalya Kumar, Koen Pauwels

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Most companies reduce spending in recessions, especially on marketing items that may be easier to cut (certainly relative to payroll). Right now, advertising agencies are struggling to stay afloat, and Google and Facebook are reporting substantially lower ad revenues as marketing spending dives with the business cycle (cyclical marketing). But that is today’s equivalent of bleeding – an old-fashioned but once widespread treatment that actually reduces the patient’s ability to fight disease. Companies that have bounced back most strongly from previous recessions usually did not cut their marketing spend, and in many cases actually increased it. But they did change …

The Effect Of Consideration Set On Market Structure, Jun B. Kim Jul 2020

The Effect Of Consideration Set On Market Structure, Jun B. Kim

Asia Marketing Journal

We estimate a choice-based aggregate demand model accounting for consumers" consideration sets, and study its implications on market structure. In contrast to past research, we model and estimate consumer demand using aggregate-level consumer browsing data in addition to aggregatelevel choice data. The use of consumer browsing data allows us to study consumer demand in a realistic setting in which consumers choose from a subset of products. We calibrate the proposed model on both data sets, avoid biases in parameter estimates, and compute the price elasticity measures. As an empirical application, we estimate consumer demand in the camcorder category and study …

The Role Of Imagery Vs. Analytical Advertisement On New Products Evaluation, Juyon Lee, Wujin Chu Jul 2020

The Role Of Imagery Vs. Analytical Advertisement On New Products Evaluation, Juyon Lee, Wujin Chu

Asia Marketing Journal

Combining prior theories on innovation newness with information processing style (imagery vs. analytical), this study presents a theoretical framework; develops hypotheses; and makes predictions on how analytical versus imagery ads influence consumers differently depending on the newness level of products. The study shows that consumers are more likely to evaluate RNPs (radicallyinnovative new products) positively when they are advertised with imagery cues. Compared with analytical advertisements, imagery advertisements increased advertising effectiveness, product evaluation, and purchase intention of RNPs. These effects were demonstrated by using stimuli from two product categories consisting of washing machines and cars.
In particular, in advertisement for …
