The Strategic Implications Of Scale In Choice-Based Conjoint Analysis, John R. Hauser, Felix Eggers, Matthew Selove Nov 2019

The Strategic Implications Of Scale In Choice-Based Conjoint Analysis, John R. Hauser, Felix Eggers, Matthew Selove

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Choice-based conjoint (CBC) studies have begun to rely on simulators to forecast equilibrium prices for pricing, strategic product positioning, and patent/copyright valuations. Whereas CBC research has long focused on the accuracy of estimated relative partworths of attribute levels, predicted equilibrium prices and strategic positioning are surprisingly and dramatically dependent on scale: the magnitude of the partworths (including the price coefficient) relative to the magnitude of the error term. Although the impact of scale on the ability to estimate heterogeneous partworths is well known, neither the literature nor current practice address the sensitivity of pricing and positioning to scale. This sensitivity …

Customer-Based University Branding As A Survival Strategy Used By State Universities In Zimbabwe In The Face Of Foreign Competition., Frank Gwavuya, Dzidziso Kamuriwo Nov 2019

Customer-Based University Branding As A Survival Strategy Used By State Universities In Zimbabwe In The Face Of Foreign Competition., Frank Gwavuya, Dzidziso Kamuriwo

Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)

Customer-based branding is a critical branding approach for almost any organisation. This is also true for state universities, particularly those in Zimbabwe. State-owned universities in Zimbabwe do not receive adequate funding from the Government of Zimbabwe, which is financially challenged owing to a national economy that has been performing poorly for close to fifteen (15) years. Against this background, state owned universities find themselves increasingly obliged to compete for students in order to raise revenue to finance their daily operations as well as capital expenditure. The aim of this study was twofold: to investigate the impact of customer-based branding as …

Who’S Got My Back? Comparing Consumers’ Reactions Topeer‐Provided And Firm‐Provided Customer Support, Lan Jiang, Matthew O'Hern, Sara Hanson Nov 2019

Who’S Got My Back? Comparing Consumers’ Reactions Topeer‐Provided And Firm‐Provided Customer Support, Lan Jiang, Matthew O'Hern, Sara Hanson

Marketing Faculty Publications

This study demonstrates that when an individual encounters a product‐related problem, fellow consumers (i.e., one’s peers) have a unique advantage in providing social support to the affected consumer. Specifically, we find that social support can be a dominant driver of consumer satisfaction when the risk of customer defection is at its highest (i.e., following an unsuccessful attempt to solve the consumer’s problem). Using real‐world data from an online support community, a pilot study finds that if the problem that a consumer faces goes unsolved, satisfaction is greater when consumers receive peer‐provided versus firm‐provided support. Study 1 replicates this finding in …

Addressing The Gap In Consumer Protection For Small Business Consumers Through A Multiple Method Research Program, Glenn L. Christensen, Sterling A. Bone, Jerome D. Williams Nov 2019

Addressing The Gap In Consumer Protection For Small Business Consumers Through A Multiple Method Research Program, Glenn L. Christensen, Sterling A. Bone, Jerome D. Williams

Faculty Publications

For more than a decade we, as academic researchers, have investigated the experience of small business customers seeking financial products for their businesses. We have employed a variety of research methodologies to explore the “lived” experiences of small business owners seeking financing, including matched-paired mystery shopping, video ethnography, depth-interviews, controlled experiments, and surveys. From this research, we show that with limited financial sophistication, entrepreneurial small-business consumers approach the financial marketplace much more like retail financial consumers than sophisticated, corporate customers. Furthermore, we find that the customer service received by these small business customers seeking small business bank loan products is …

The Status Of Women On Utah State Boards & Commissions: A 2019 Update, Susan R. Madsen, Megan Roper Nov 2019

The Status Of Women On Utah State Boards & Commissions: A 2019 Update, Susan R. Madsen, Megan Roper

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Research shows that organizations will increasingly thrive when both men and women hold leadership roles. Gender inclusivity benefits not only businesses, but also entities such as churches, state legislatures, city councils, state governments, and state and local boards and commissions. Studies have shown that there are numerous benefits to attracting, retaining, promoting, and empowering women within organizations and entities. These benefits are discussed at length in a previous brief titled “Why Do We Need More Women Leaders in Utah?”2More specifically, research demonstrates the need for the government—and democratic governance processes in general—to reflect gender diversity accurately within its constituency at …
