Healthcare is continually evolving to meet changing governmental regulations and a new emphasis on patient perceptions of quality care. Governmental mandates create a shift in focus from volume-based to value-based reimbursement for providers. The purpose of this article is to identify satisfaction drivers with particular emphasis on similarities and differences between the perceptions of hospital patients and providers. A combination of quality-based healthcare, stakeholder theory, and services literature points to key service outcomes including expectations, quality, value, and satisfaction. Multiple group structural equations modeling provides a vehicle for examining differences in relationships among these constructs between these two key stakeholders, …
A Social Network Perspective On Envy In Organizations, Theresa M. Floyd, Christopher M. Sterling
A Social Network Perspective On Envy In Organizations, Theresa M. Floyd, Christopher M. Sterling
Management and Marketing Faculty Publications
This chapter seeks to examine the development and consequences of envy using a social networks perspective. The social network perspective considers that individuals are embedded in a web of relationships which significantly influence individual behavior (Borgatti, Mehra, Brass, & Labianca, 2009). Much of the activity that takes place inside an organization occurs within a structure of informal relationships. These relationships, although informal, often represent key communication-based interactions that allow employees to do their jobs. People often compare their levels of performance and awards attained to those of their coworkers. They gather this social comparison information through direct inquiry and third-party …

Employees’ Responses To An Organizational Merger: Intraindividual Change In Organizational Identification, Attachment, And Turnover, W. Sung, M. Woehler, J. Fagan, Travis J. Grosser, Theresa M. Floyd, G. Labianca
Management and Marketing Faculty Publications
The authors used pre-post merger data from 599 employees experiencing a major corporate merger to compare 3 conceptual models based on the logic of social identity theory (SIT) and exchange theory to explain employees’ merger responses. At issue is how perceived change in employees’ own jobs and roles (i.e., personal valence) and perceived change in their organization’s status and merger appropriateness (i.e., organizational valence) affect their changing organizational identification, attachment attitudes, and voluntary turnover. The first model suggests that organizational identification and organizational attachment develop independently and have distinct antecedents. The second model posits that organizational identification mediates the relationships …

A Study Of The Influence Of Branded Messages On Non-Branded Food Items When Presented To 10 To 14-Year-Old Children, Cassandra J. Chinn
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Children are more likely to create bonds with foods based on the environmental, socioeconomic and familial influences in their lives during early development stages. They gravitate to foods that are familiar to them and that are positioned with familiarity, creating an opportunity for branded food items to create more of a space in their psyche as part of their identity. Current research looks to reposition those energy-dense foods (commodity vegetables) that can often times be left unbranded, to see if immediate interest in the food items changes. Results found no significance to confirm nor deny a positive correlation in interest …

The role of the individual in relation to a collective has been an influential research topic in various scientific fields, including psychology, sociology, marketing, and international business. Despite this popularity, scholars have not yet reached consensus regarding how (unidimensional, two-dimensional, or three-dimensional) or at what level (individual level or culture level) this relationship should be studied. Resting on this epistemological debate, the goal of this dissertation is to provide scholars and practitioners in the marketing and international business fields with a valid and reliable research instrument that will allow the study of this relationship in consumption settings. Specifically in this …

To be specific, five types of motivation (fun, compensation, revenge, profitability, and family interest), nine types of emotion (love, surprise, disgust, anger, shame, sadness, trust, fear, and pride), and three types of behaviour (without personal damages, at destination, and with personal damages) have been found to be related to travel insurance fraud. In order to facilitate the detection of dishonest claims, the relationship between these psychographic, as well as …

The Role Of Place Image In Business Location Decisions, Candice Marie Clouse
ETD Archive
The location where businesses choose to locate or re-locate their businesses, also known as site selection, is an important policy matter for economic development practitioners and academics since significant amount of resources are spent in this area. As places spend a great deal of public dollars marketing their city, region, and state to potential investors and businesses, private sector dollars from business invest a significant amount on land, labor, and capital to get these new facilities and sites up and running. To date, most of the literature as it relates to place image and business site selection decisions examine traditional …

Global Brands And Drivers Of Consumers’ Purchase Behavior: A Multi-Dimensional Perspective, Nayyer Naseem Naseem
Wayne State University Dissertations
As the world moves towards global economic interdependence and international cultural exchanges, more firms are looking towards expansion into overseas markets, to take advantage of emerging business opportunities and available resources. For a firm, that plans to sell its offerings in any foreign market, it is important to understand the consumer behavior and idiosyncrasies predominant in that market, to be more informed, competitive, and successful. Extant research on the dynamics and drivers of consumer’s buying behavior in a global market place has primarily focused, either on the impact of consumers’ personal predispositions, or the influence of brand/product related perceptions, or …

Are Low Price Guarantees And Price Matching Guarantees Created Equal: Examining The Effects Of Different Types Of Price Guarantees On Consumers’ Evaluations, Swati Verma
Wayne State University Dissertations
Retailers offer one of Low Price Guarantees (LPGs) or Price Matching Guarantees (PMGs) to signal their price position in the marketplace. Past literature has assumed that both LPG and PMG work similarly as signals of low prices, and consequently, LPG and PMG have been used interchangeably in both research and practice. In my dissertation, I posit that LPG and PMG send out different price signals, and therefore have different effects on consumers’ evaluations. Across four studies, I show that LPGs signal lower prices than PMGs, and so LPGs lead to superior evaluations in pre-purchase scenarios, especially for promotion focused consumers …
Star-Crossed Consumers: The Effects Of Online Rating Scale Length On Product Evaluations, Aaron C. Johnson
Star-Crossed Consumers: The Effects Of Online Rating Scale Length On Product Evaluations, Aaron C. Johnson
Wayne State University Dissertations
Consumers’ ratings of products are ubiquitous in the online marketplace (e.g., Amazon; Yelp). The rating scales provided by online businesses typically comprise a set of stars that appear in the form of linear scales. Consumers looking to purchase a certain product likely rely on product ratings based on these rating scales. Although past research confirms the intuitive expectation that a higher star rating for a product elicits more favorable responses from consumers, there is a paucity of research related to effects of the properties of the scales themselves on consumers’ psychology. The literature on cognitive processing of information suggests that …
