JOHNSON CITY (June 24, 2021) — Registration is now open for the Hospitality and Tourism Management Certification Program, a partnership with the East Tennessee State University Office of Professional Development and Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association (NETTA). The certification is a regional first, having grown over the past two years to include more than two dozen graduates.
Classes will be held each Tuesday, Aug. 17-Nov. 16, from 6-9 p.m., at the Hands On! Discovery Center, located in Gray at the ETSU Natural History Museum and Gray Fossil Site. Registration is required.

JOHNSON CITY (June 23, 2021) – Two faculty members at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine received a grant to develop, implement and evaluate a program for training and retaining a behavioral health workforce in Northeast Tennessee.
Dr. Jodi Polaha, project director, and Dr. Matthew Tolliver, co-director, were awarded $1,855,118 from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for their project titled “Integrated Care Appalachia: A Model Training Program to Accelerate the Behavioral Health Workforce in Northeast Tennessee.”

JOHNSON CITY – (June 17, 2021) East Tennessee State University and BrightRidge celebrated the installation of eight electric vehicle (EV) charging stations on campus today. The project marked the 100th installation by Seven States Power Corporation in the Tennessee Valley.
The stations are funded through student fees and powered by BrightRidge, which is providing the electric fuel. Seven States Power Corporation, an energy solutions company, is serving as project manager.

JOHNSON CITY (June 16, 2021) – Cloud Wise Academy, an East Tennessee State University Innovation Lab affiliate member, recently concluded a six-week-long course designed to teach valuable coding skills and train students for technology professions.
The Website Coding for Beginners course was the first coding experience for most students, and they learned to create websites with HTML, JavaScript and CSS. Through this course and others, Cloud Wise Academy’s mission is to train and equip the region’s workforce with online marketing and technology skills. JOHNSON CITY (June 2, 2021) – A “storymap” telling the story of the Gray Fossil Site using maps of fossils clarifies how the site formed and improves paleontological research.
“Spatial Analyses of the Gray Fossil Site Vertebrate Remains” was created by David Carney, a May graduate of ETSU’s master’s degree program in geosciences with a concentration in paleontology. This study combined geographic information systems (GIS) and vertebrate taphonomy – the study of what happens to animals after death and burial – and was published as his master’s thesis.

JOHNSON CITY (June 1, 2021) – A group of East Tennessee State University scientists recently published their first COVID-19 related paper emerging from funding awarded to Dr. Zhi Q. Yao by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
The paper, titled “Blockage of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein-mediated cell–cell fusion using COVID-19 convalescent plasma,” was recently published in Scientific Reports. The funding Yao received from the ADA in 2020 was the university’s first major funding for COVID-19-specific research.

Rochelly Rivera Matos grew up speaking Spanish as her primary language in her hometown of Toa Alta, Puerto Rico.
However, language has not been a significant barrier for her at East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy. The third-year student pharmacist has immersed herself in student organizations and helped her peers from different cultures and languages adapt to life in East Tennessee.

JOHNSON CITY – In his classrooms and in other supervisory settings, Dr. Mickey White prepares his students at East Tennessee State University to step into the role of a counselor.
He trains them for the types of situations they may face. He provides feedback in the clinical setting. He shares research and best practices, and he leads important exploratory discussions on the complex ethical standards that govern the profession.
Unfortunately, when turning to any research and best practices that specifically address the experiences of LGBTQ counselors, White says the bookshelves are almost bare.

JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University is preparing to launch two in-demand programs that will expand its footprint in the rehabilitative sciences – a Doctor of Occupational Therapy and a Master of Science in Orthotics and Prosthetics.

After finishing an undergraduate degree at another university, Adam Derrick wasn’t quite sure what they wanted to do next. It was at this crossroad that Adam “stumbled” into the AmeriCorps program.
And from there, the future suddenly became clear.
Adam’s first AmeriCorps assignment was in Austin working with College Forward, an organization that assisted first-generation and low-income students in setting higher education goals and helping them succeed. Adam served as a mentor to these students and loved the experience.
