Meet P4 Payton Tipton, of Jonesborough, TN, who grew up in the Appalachian region and wanted to learn more about the culture as part of her rotation.
What did you do while on rotation?
PT: For the first part of the rotation, we worked in Rogersville (TN) at a federally qualified health center. We helped out in the pharmacy and counseled patients on their prescriptions. We also did a lot of medication therapy management. For the last week of rotation, we had didactic lectures in the mornings and did fun activities in the afternoons. Students Aaron Garst and Tyler Finocchio from East Tennessee University, and Emily Hoeksema and Brandi Sherbert from the Medical University of South Carolina spent four weeks in Aberdeen working alongside RGU students and observing pharmacy professionals in a variety of settings across Scotland.
It was the students' first visit to Scotland and they spent time learning about how pharmacy is taught and practiced in the country as well as enjoying a number of activities and visits around the north-east and in the Highlands.

JOHNSON CITY Dr. Zac Walls arrived at East Tennessee State University in 2011 and has been working ever since to improve drugs used to treat certain cancers.
An assistant professor in the Gatton College of Pharmacy, Walls currently is focusing much of his research on doxorubicin, one of the most successful drugs used in the treatment of ovarian cancer.
Im trying to reformulate the drug to make it even better, Walls said.

JOHNSON CITY As the first two fellows ever at East Tennessee State Universitys Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy, Dr. Daniel Ventricelli and Dr. Rajkumar Sevak are setting the bar high for themselves and for future participants in the new fellowship program.
Established this year, the Community Pharmacy Practice Research Fellowship is a two- to three-year training program that emphasizes practice-based research, particularly in the realm of prescription drug abuse.

JOHNSON CITY Dr. Sarah Melton, a professor in East Tennessee State Universitys Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy, will lead the College of Public Healths Grand Rounds event slated to take place on Friday, Sept. 19, from 12-1 p.m.
Melton will be joined by members of the pharmacy schools organization, Generation Rx. Their talk will focus on prescription drug abuse in the Appalachian Region. It will be based on an interprofessional approach to appropriate use of controlled substances.

For anyone interested in enrolling in Medicare Part D, student groups from Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University are hosting several Saturday events in Johnson City, TN. The events are free and open to the public.
Pharmacy students will guide participants on how to use the online registration tool, explore individual plan options and answer questions. Participants will need to bring their red, white and blue Medicare card as well as a full list of current medications.

JOHNSON CITY Approximately 100 of East Tennessee State Universitys Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy students are celebrating a national victory after their chapter of the Kappa Psi organization was named the Most Improved Chapter in the country last month.
Kappa Psi is the oldest and largest professional pharmacy fraternity.
In early August, the ETSU chapter earned the Most Improved Chapter award for the district, which is made up of 18 different chapters. Less than two weeks later, it was named the national winner, beating out the top chapter from each of the other 10 districts located throughout the United States. …

These Paragon winners are treated to a trip to our national Retail Leadership Conference and recognized there.
