JOHNSON CITY (Nov. 11, 2020) – The Documents/Law/Maps Department of the Sherrod Library at East Tennessee State University has partnered with the Archives of Appalachia to curate a digital exhibit for Veterans Day.
Through this effort, six of the Library’s World War II Newsmaps, along with local materials that correspond to the dates on the maps, have been digitized and made available for public view.
According to Paul Nease of the Sherrod Library, the newsmaps, which were published by the U.S. Army Information Branch to motivate and inform American military personnel, summarize weekly developments of military action abroad. The local …

JOHNSON CITY (Nov. 9, 2020) – A study by Dr. Martin Olsen of ETSU Health OB/GYN reveals new information about the prevention of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), which occurs when infants go through withdrawal from an addictive drug they were exposed to in the womb.
Olsen’s study, published in the November 2020 issue of the Southern Medical Journal, reviewed the charts of 21 pregnant patients who were enrolled in an outpatient buprenorphine medication-assisted therapy (MAT) tapering program at ETSU Health.

JOHNSON CITY (Nov. 3, 2020) – Dr. Erik Petersen, assistant professor in East Tennessee State University College of Public Health’s Department of Health Sciences, has received $300,000 to study Salmonella sensing-based antibacterials for use in poultry.
The award is a collaborative bi-national grant with Dr. Erez Mills from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Rehovot, Israel.
“Currently, among the food-borne zoonoses, or diseases that are spread between animals and people, Salmonellosis has become a frequent major public health concern,” Petersen said.

A second-year student in ETSU’s Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) Program, Drew was selected to be the Student State Officer for the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA), which has more than 13,000 members.

(November 3, 2020) The opportunity to work as a graduate assistant at the Basler Center for Physical Activity was a deciding factor for Austin Seay when he was looking for a graduate program in sport management.

JOHNSON CITY, TN—Appalachian Diseases of Despair, a new report from the Appalachian Regional Commission finds that despite overall declining mortality rates from diseases of despair (overdose, suicide, and liver disease) between 2017-2018, the Region’s diseases of despair mortality rate in 2018 was still 36 percent higher than the rate for the non-Appalachian United States. Moreover, among Appalachians in the prime working ages of 25-54, the diseases of despair mortality rate was 43 percent higher in the Region than the rest of the country.
