JOHNSON CITY (April 19, 2021) – This spring, East Tennessee State University launched its inaugural ETSU Mentored Substance Use Research (EMSUR) training program, designed to train substance use researchers across multiple disciplines in order to improve health outcomes in Central Appalachia.
Ten ETSU graduate students from multiple colleges and disciplines were selected for the inaugural cohort and are paired with a faculty mentor to train them in substance use research. JOHNSON CITY (April 16, 2021) – Over the last 20 years, dozens of extinct animal species have been identified from the five-million-year-old ecosystem of the Gray Fossil Site, including famous large mammals like tapirs, rhinos and mastodons. But in recent years, researchers have been uncovering more information about the small mammals of the site. Now, thanks to a new study published in the journal Eastern Paleontologist, science has its first look at the Gray Site’s fossil rabbits, the oldest known rabbits in the Appalachians.

Since the Roan selected its first class 20 years ago, students have been required to be nominated by their high school in order to be considered for the prestigious four-year scholarship program. Appalachian Places will continue the program’s long literary tradition of highlighting the people, places, issues and themes relating to the Appalachian region.
The new magazine will help continue that tradition by following the example of its print-version forerunner, Now & Then magazine, which, with the exception of a two-year hiatus in the early 2000s, ran from 1984 until it ceased publication in 2017.

JOHNSON CITY (April 12, 2021) – East Tennessee State University’s College of Public Health has launched a new research center that aims to reduce cardiovascular disease and associated risk factors in Central Appalachia, while addressing the health disparities and health care inequities experienced by residents of the region.
The Center for Cardiovascular Risks Research (CCRR) is a cross-disciplinary, interprofessional research center led by Dr. Hadii Mamudu, professor in the Department of Health Services Management and Policy. ACRES is a national organization of nearly 200 members dedicated to advancing the delivery of special education in rural locations.

JOHNSON CITY (April 5, 2021) – As part of its continued emphasis on campus safety, East Tennessee State University will test its emergency mass notification systems on Tuesday, April 6, at 9 a.m.
ETSU’s mass notification systems were installed in 2008, and include an outdoor warning siren system with five large speakers strategically placed on the main campus and on the VA campus, emergency text and email messaging, desktop messaging for computers connected to the ETSU system, an alert message on the ETSU homepage, and a public address system in select university buildings.

JOHNSON CITY – The George L. Carter Railroad Museum, located in the Campus Center Building of East Tennessee State University, will recall the era of diesel-powered railroading this Saturday, April 24.
With COVID-19 safety protocols in place, visitors will be welcomed to “Diesel Daze,” a day of internal-combustion trains dating from 1935 through 1970. JOHNSON CITY – The Reece Museum and Slocumb Galleries at East Tennessee State University received multiple honors from the Tennessee Association of Museums (TAM) during the organization’s recent virtual Awards of Excellence Conference.
The TAM awards are presented annually to museums across the state for exceptional projects, programs and events. Nominations are made by museum staff and individuals. Each entry is presented to the TAM Awards Committee, who makes final judging and awards decisions based on creativity, originality, resourcefulness, success, support of museum mission statement, and utilization of staff and volunteers.
