JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 8, 2020) – For two decades Dr. Ted Olson, a professor in East Tennessee State University’s Department of Appalachian Studies, has been at the vanguard of efforts to study and publicly celebrate the historic recordings popularly known as the Bristol Sessions, which were conducted by influential Victor Records producer Ralph Peer.
Widely characterized as a seminal event from the early years of commercial recording, the Bristol Sessions actually involved two distinct sets of recording sessions, the first occurring in late July and early August 1927 and the second in late October and early November 1928.

JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 4, 2020) – “Tuesday Talks,” a new series of conversations on “hot-button” issues, will begin Sept. 8 for East Tennessee State University students, faculty and staff and community members.
These talks, which will provide a forum for discussion on a range of cultural and political topics, will be held via Zoom each Tuesday through Oct. 27 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Each week’s session will open with a quick overview from a guest speaker, followed by a period for discussion and debate between participants. JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 3, 2020) – The George L. Carter Railroad Museum has reopened to the public under specific health guidelines instituted by East Tennessee State University.
The museum, located in the Campus Center Building, is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All visitors are required to wear masks while on the ETSU campus and in its buildings, including the railroad museum. Directional signage is posted throughout the museum to promote physical distancing and for safe traffic flow inside the galleries and corridors. All frequently touched surfaces are routinely disinfected for added safety.

Research consultations continue to be a valuable service offered by academic libraries for students who are able to visit the library, however, most students enrolled in online degree programs or considering enrollment have limited access to campus services. To address this, the authors designed and tested a virtual reference consultation service in their library for distance learners and graduate students. This article outlines a practical approach for designing and initiating a virtual research consultation service pilot, providing equitable access to library services and a positive user experience for distance learners.

JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 2020) – A longtime East Tennessee State University music educator received two awards during a ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 17, that he had not been able to receive earlier due to COVID-19 restrictions, but he also received a surprise honor when university officials unveiled a special honor from the Tennessee legislature.

JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 1, 2020) – Researchers from East Tennessee State University are part of an international team of scientists from Europe, South America and the United States who have published a paper on new insights to how the human immune system recognizes the pathogenic fungus Candida auris.
Candida auris, which first surfaced in 2009, is resistant to many standard anti-fungal therapies and is not easy to diagnose. JOHNSON CITY – Faculty in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine have received more than $7 million in extramural funding so far this year to conduct research ranging from substance misuse to kidney disease.

JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 1, 2020) – The American Academy of Nursing (AAN) named Dr. Judy Rice, associate professor at East Tennessee State University’s College of Nursing, among 230 distinguished nurse leaders to join the 2020 Class of Fellows.
The inductees will be recognized for their significant contributions to health and health care at the Academy’s annual Transforming Health, Driving Policy Conference, taking place virtually October 29-31.

JOHNSON CITY – (August 31, 2020) Reilly Wells, a senior at University School, was notified that she earned a perfect score of 36 on the ACT exam.
Fewer than half of 1% of students who take the ACT earn a top score. In the U.S. high school graduating class of 2019, only 4,879 out of nearly 1.8 million students who took the ACT earned a top composite score of 36.
