In this article, we describe the incorporation of video learning modules into three professional communication classrooms for just such a purpose.

Deception Is In The Eye Of The Communicator: Investigating Pupil Diameter Variations In Automated Deception Detection Interviews, Jeffrey G. Proudfoot, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Judee K. Burgoon, Jay F. Nunamaker Jr. Jan 2015

Deception Is In The Eye Of The Communicator: Investigating Pupil Diameter Variations In Automated Deception Detection Interviews, Jeffrey G. Proudfoot, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Judee K. Burgoon, Jay F. Nunamaker Jr.

Faculty Publications

Deception is pervasive, often leading to adverse consequences for individuals, organizations, and society. Information systems researchers are developing tools and evaluating sensors that can be used to augment human deception judgments. One sensor exhibiting particular promise is the eye tracker. Prior work evaluating eye trackers for deception detection has focused on the detection and interpretation of brief eye behavior variations in response to stimuli (e.g., images) or interview questions. However, research is needed to understand how eye behaviors evolve over the course of an interaction with a deception detection system. Using latent growth curve modeling, we test how pupil diameter …

Smartphones are increasingly penetrating business and consumer markets, and mobile applications (apps) have engendered a large and innovative market. Whereas apps are useful, they also present new forms of privacy risk associated with users’ personal and location data. However, these dangers do not appear to increase the perceived risk or reduce the trust consumers demonstrate when using apps. Many information technology (IT) trust indicators are well documented, such as the quality of the IT, trust assurances, brand recognition and social influences. However, these traditional indicators appear to have a lesser impact on the adoption of mobile commerce via apps because …

Unknown Exception Handling Tool Using Humans As Agents, Mwaka Mahanga

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In a typical workflow process, exceptions are the norm. Exceptions are defined as deviations from the normal sequence of activities and events. Exceptions can be divided into two broad categories: known exceptions (i.e., expected and predefined deviations) and unknown exceptions (i.e., unexpected and undefined deviations). Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) has become the de facto standard for executing business workflows with the use of web services. BPEL includes exception handling methods that are sufficient for known exception scenarios. Depending on the exception and the specifics of the exception handling tools, processes may either halt or move to completion. Instances of …

An Innovative Clustering Approach To Market Segmentation For Improved Price Prediction, Donghui Shi, Jian Guan, Jozef Zurada, Alan S. Levitan

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

A main obstacle to accurate prediction is often the heterogeneous nature of data. Existing studies have pointed to data clustering as a potential solution to reduce heterogeneity, and therefore increase prediction accuracy. This paper describes an innovative clustering approach based on a novel adaptation of the Fuzzy C-Means algorithm and its application to market segmentation in real estate. Over 15,000 actual home sales transactions were used to evaluate our approach. The test results demonstrate that the accuracy in price prediction shows notable improvement for some clustered market segments. In comparison with existing methods our approach is simple to implement. It …

Perceptions And Use Of Anonymous Communication Across Cultures, Guido Lang, Tamilla Mavlanova Jan 2015

Perceptions And Use Of Anonymous Communication Across Cultures, Guido Lang, Tamilla Mavlanova

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

We use social networks to communicate, keep in touch and express our opinions in a manner that has become completely ubiquitous. However, this very ubiquity and ease of expression have exposed another, contentious side – one where nobody can remain completely anonymous for long and where every conversation is stored in perpetuity. Some fear that the ephemeral quality of a social interaction has been lost, which threatens our right to be forgotten and freedom of expression. In this paper, we look at why people engage in anonymous communication, and if there is a perceived need for legal protection of anonymous …

Validating The Technostress Instrument Using A Sample Of Chinese Knowledge Workers, Leida Chen Jan 2015

Validating The Technostress Instrument Using A Sample Of Chinese Knowledge Workers, Leida Chen

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Today, the phenomenon of technostress is both pervasive and global. Nevertheless, research efforts, especially empirical and cross culture studies, in this domain have been very limited. In addition, lack of consistency in the technostress measure found in existing literature made it difficult to build a unified body of knowledge of technostress. Using a sample of 221 Chinese knowledge workers, this study cross-validated and refined the technostress measure developed by Tarafdar et al. (2007). It was found that the instrument offered high validity and reliability after some respecification in the Chinese context. Technostress experienced by Chinese knowledge workers was investigated and …

Proposing The Multi-Motive Information Systems Continuance Model (Misc) To Better Explain End-User System Evaluations And Continuance Intentions, Paul Benjamin Lowry, James Gaskin, Gregory D. Moody

Faculty Publications

Information system designers must consider the influence of users’ intrinsic motivations, in addition to commonly studied extrinsic motivations, to ensure that users will want to continue using the system. In an attempt to acknowledge this need, several studies have extended models of extrinsic motivation to include intrinsic variables. However, these studies largely downplay the role of users’ intrinsic motivations in predicting system use and how this role differs from the role of extrinsic motivation. The role of met or unmet expectations, as a result of system use, is often left out of extant models, and their function as co-creators in …

New Slaves: Kanye West, Brad Paisley, And Contemporary Confederate-Flag Discourse In Popular Music Iconography, Kenneth Hartvigsen Jan 2015

New Slaves: Kanye West, Brad Paisley, And Contemporary Confederate-Flag Discourse In Popular Music Iconography, Kenneth Hartvigsen

Faculty Publications

One hundred and fifty years after Appomattox, the iconographic remains of America’s Civil War are still contested symbolic artifacts. Case in point: at the writing of this paper a state bill sat on California Governor Jerry Brown’s desk which would ban the sale of the Confederate flag or any merchandise with Confederate flag imagery on state property. Thus California has become the most recent battleground of the war between the states, or to word it in more precise language, California legislators have entered the debate over who controls a flag’s meaning and memory.
