Cultural Implications Of "Excellent Employees": Comparing American And Korean Workers, Chong W. Kim, Yung-Ho Cho, Andrew Sikula Sr.

Management Faculty Research

As noted in Kim & Sikula (2003, 2005), there are three types of people in the workplace: "Necessities", "Commoners," and "Parasites". A necessity (excellent employee) is irreplaceable and crucial to the functioning of an organization. A Commoner (average laborer) is a person of normal ability and talent who has no significant impact on organizational success. Lastly, Parasites (problem workers) are detrimental freeloaders who damage the functioning of an organization.

In the 2005 paper, we analyzed the survey responses of 25 students in an MBA Organizational Behavior class and 13 working managers, all in the United States. In this paper, we …

To scope and clearly define current and future needs for aquatic animal health training and for systems for merit-based accreditation and competency assessments.

Provision of high quality aquatic animal health (AAH) services is a complex multidisciplinary activity. Hence, training programs must address all discipline areas to achieve the desired outcome of robust service delivery to meet all stakeholder group needs. The current and future needs for AAH training have been identified across many sectors through survey work and direct interviews with key stakeholders. There is a shortfall in both total capacity and more prominently, in the availability of high skill …

How Cios Can Effectively Use Influence Behaviors, Harvey Enns, Dean B. Mcfarlin, Sid L. Huff Mar 2007

How Cios Can Effectively Use Influence Behaviors, Harvey Enns, Dean B. Mcfarlin, Sid L. Huff

MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications

To accomplish their objectives, Chief Information Officers (CIOs) must rely on their abilities to influence members of top management. Effective use of influence behaviors can make the difference between successful and less successful CIOs. But aspiring senior managers are rarely formally taught how to influence others. They learn informally on the job.

This article explores influence behaviors and their appropriate use by CIOs. It first describes 11 common influence behaviors—rational persuasion (logical arguments), apprising (emphasizing expected benefits), inspirational appeal, consultation, collaboration, personal appeal, ingratiation, exchange, legitimating (connected to precedent), coalition (asking others to persuade), and pressure. Then this article discusses …

Valuing Information Technology Infrastructures: A Growth Options Approach, Qizhi Dai, Robert J. Kauffman, Salvatore T. March Mar 2007

Valuing Information Technology Infrastructures: A Growth Options Approach, Qizhi Dai, Robert J. Kauffman, Salvatore T. March

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Decisions to invest in information technology (IT) infrastructure are often made based on an assessment of its immediate value to the organization. However, an important source of value comes from the fact that such technologies have the potential to be leveraged in the development of future applications. From a real options perspective, IT infrastructure investments create growth options that can be exercised if and when an organization decides to develop systems to provide new or enhanced IT capabilities. We present an analytical model based on real options that shows the process by which this potential is converted into business value, …

Releasing Individually Identifiable Microdata With Privacy Protection Against Stochastic Threat: An Application To Health Information, Robert Garfinkel, Ram Gopal, Steven M. Thompson

Management Faculty Publications

The ability to collect and disseminate individually identifiable microdata is becoming increasingly important in a number of arenas. This is especially true in health care and national security, where this data is considered vital for a number of public health and safety initiatives. In some cases legislation has been used to establish some standards for limiting the collection of and access to such data. However, all such legislative efforts contain many provisions that allow for access to individually identifiable microdata without the consent of the data subject. Furthermore, although legislation is useful in that penalties are levied for violating the …

Acquisition Of Operations Capability: A Model And Test Across Us And European Firms, Keah Choon Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, Jayanth Jayaram, Ram Narasimhan Feb 2007

Acquisition Of Operations Capability: A Model And Test Across Us And European Firms, Keah Choon Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, Jayanth Jayaram, Ram Narasimhan

Management Faculty Publications

In this paper, a three-factor model of operations capability is presented which, unlike previous studies that view capability as an outcome, examines the drivers of capability acquisition. The model proposes that capability acquisition is a function of an organization's commitment to the principles of quality management, just-in-time practices, and effective new product development processes. Furthermore, the paper proposes that these underlying facets of capability acquisition are common across geographic boundaries. The model is tested using data drawn from US and European companies. Results not only provide support for the three-factor model, but also for the invariance of the model and …

A Collaborative, Hierarchical, Incremental, And Problem Solving Information Systems Development Model, Timothy Joseph Burns Jan 2007

A Collaborative, Hierarchical, Incremental, And Problem Solving Information Systems Development Model, Timothy Joseph Burns

Dissertations

The "software crisis" has been a much discussed and debated topic in Information Systems research. A core cause of the crisis is often identified as the methodologies and approaches used to develop information systems. Thus, over the years a multitude of methodologies have emerged in support of quality software. While many of these methodologies have been effective, research has shown that system development is a highly circumstantial process, and that no one methodology can be optimal in every context of every project. It is also a fact that system development practitioners have employed ad hoc approaches to modify formal methodologies …

Analysis Of Web Pages And Metrics Related To Global Environmental Management, G. Kent Webb

Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology

Much of the media’s attention has recently been focused on problems with the global environment and its management. This paper examines related internet sites and focuses on how web metrics can provide information on the priorities and interests of internet users. The conclusions from the data analysis are that keyword search statistics provide good information on user priorities that may be used in place of more expensive survey based research. Keyword search data significantly reproduced the results of a survey used to identify investment banking opportunities in the area of global environmental management. Also, contrary to expectations, the rank order …

Predicting Crime Reporting With Decision Trees And The National Crime Victimization Survey, Gondy Leroy, Juliette Gutierrez '13

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Crime reports are used by law enforcement to find criminals, prevent further violations, identify problems causing crimes and allocate government resources. Unfortunately, many crimes go unreported. This may lead to an incorrect crime picture and suboptimal responses to the existing situation. Our goal is to use a data mining approach to increase understanding of when crime is reported or not. An increased understanding could lead to new, more effective programs to fight crime or changes to existing programs. We use the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) which comprises data collected from 45,000 households about incidents, victims, suspects and if the …

The Constraints Of The Valuation Distribution For Solving A Class Of Games By Using A Best Response Algorithm, Gangshu (George) Cai, Jie Zhong, Peter R. Wurman Jan 2007

The Constraints Of The Valuation Distribution For Solving A Class Of Games By Using A Best Response Algorithm, Gangshu (George) Cai, Jie Zhong, Peter R. Wurman

Information Systems and Analytics

Infinite games with incomplete information are common in practice. First-price, sealed-bid auctions are a prototypical example. To solve this kind of infinite game, a heuristic approach is to discretise the strategy spaces and enumerate to approximate the equilibrium strategies. However, an approximate algorithm might not be guaranteed to converge. This paper discusses the utilisation of a best response algorithm in solving infinite games with incomplete information. We show the constraints of the valuation distributions define the necessary conditions of the convergence of the best response algorithm for several classes of infinite games, including auctions. A salient feature of the necessary …

Management Information Systems Faculty Publications

The recent bankruptcy of the eGrocer Webvan demonstrates that online retailers face enormous risks and hence need well thought out business strategies (Porter, 2001). This paper presents a longitudinal study of the business strategies of two eGrocers that use physical stores to house their Internet-based grocery operations (clicks-and-bricks) and two online only (pure-play) eGrocers. Our study results in a number of recommendations for successful eGrocer strategy configuration. Even though we focus on eGrocer’s strategies, we suggest that the lessons learned are of interest to other retailers planning to embark on eCommerce activities.

Effects Of It Governance On Information Security, Yu Wu Jan 2007

Effects Of It Governance On Information Security, Yu Wu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is composed by three essays that explore the relationship between good IT governance and effective information security services. Governance steers and verifies performance of fiduciary duties, through the implementation of proper governance mechanisms. With a focus on information security, this essay presents three categories of governance mechanisms - process-based, structural, and relational. When properly instituted, they work together to ensure that IT understands business requirements for information security and strives to fulfill them. An explanation is offered about the efficacy of those mechanisms, based on an agency theory perspective that views IT as an agent for business. The …

Negotiation, Email, And Internet Reverse Auctions: How Sourcing Mechanisms Deployed By Buyers Affect Suppliers’ Trust, Thomas F. Gattiker, Xiaowen Huang, Joshua L. Schwarz

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Internet has made a wealth of new tools available to the industrial buyer. However, researchers have suggested that computer mediated interaction with suppliers may not be conducive to strong supplier relationships in general and to trust in particular. This paper compares two computer-mediated sourcing tools (email negotiation and Internet reverse auctions) with face-to-face negotiation. Information richness theory suggests that the different media will produce different impacts relating to sellers’ trust in buyers. Data are generated with a simulation experiment using 117 subjects. We found that information richness affects seller-buyer trust: Sellers who used face-to-face negotiation, the richest medium in …

The Development Of A Thorough Test Plan In The Analysis Phase Leading To More Successful Software Development Projects, Jim Nindel-Edwards, Gerhard Steinke Jan 2007

The Development Of A Thorough Test Plan In The Analysis Phase Leading To More Successful Software Development Projects, Jim Nindel-Edwards, Gerhard Steinke

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

A critical problem in many software development projects is missing some important requirements until late in the development life cycle. Building a thorough test plan very early in the product development cycle has the potential for early discovery of missing requirements with attendant reduction in project costs and schedule improvement. Key to the success of this approach is the understanding that mature tests often go beyond the documented requirements for applications and into exploring the boundaries of the application domain where missing requirements are often uncovered. In addition, the test methodology of looking at features from multiple users’ perspectives and …

More Secure Passwords, Scott Magruder, Stanley X. Lewis Jr Jan 2007

More Secure Passwords, Scott Magruder, Stanley X. Lewis Jr

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Passwords are often the first line of defense against hackers trying to logon to a user’s account. Due to this, the password that a user selects for protection of their account is critical. These passwords must be “good” passwords that are not easily cracked. However, how does the network administrator enforce this? A simple change to the login process can make the passwords chosen by users much more secure. A description of this simple process is given in this paper. The normal login process is described. A description of the how hackers attempt to crack passwords is given. The simple …

Improving The Judicial System To Handle Computer Crime, Gerald V. Post, Albert Kagan Jan 2007

Improving The Judicial System To Handle Computer Crime, Gerald V. Post, Albert Kagan

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This paper asked professionals in the legal system to evaluate the current state and effectiveness of laws to identify and deter computer crime. Responses were evaluated with a formal structural equation model. The results generally show that legal professionals believe potential jurors have minimal knowledge of computer crime issues. More importantly, they also believe that judges have little knowledge or experience. A similar lack of knowledge by defense attorneys indicates that it could be difficult for a person accused of computer related infractions to find adequate representation. On the other hand, more experienced participants do not believe computer laws present …

A Framework And Guide For Understanding The Creation Of Consumer Trust, Joseph A. Cazier Jan 2007

A Framework And Guide For Understanding The Creation Of Consumer Trust, Joseph A. Cazier

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This paper develops a framework and model for building trust by combining research on the creation of trust with the dimensions of trust: ability, benevolence and integrity. By combining these dimensions in a matrix with the types of trust production based on characteristics, process and institutions, the paper develops a robust 3 x 3 matrix with which to categorize and understand trust production. The framework is developed and analyzed in the light of literature on consumer trust. This framework can help researchers, practitioners and consumers understand trust creation and assist businesses in developing a comprehensive strategy for managing trust.

implementation factors and their effect on data warehousing success, perceptions of data warehousing professionals are examined in a cross sectional survey. Best subsets regression is used to identify the specific factors that are important to each success variable. Since different companies may have different objectives or emphases in their data warehousing endeavors, the results are useful …

Is Support For Top Managers' Dynamic Capabilities, Environmental Dynamism, And Firm Performance: An Empirical Investigation, Michael J. Zhang Jan 2007

Is Support For Top Managers' Dynamic Capabilities, Environmental Dynamism, And Firm Performance: An Empirical Investigation, Michael J. Zhang

WCBT Faculty Publications

Despite a continual interest in developing information systems (IS) to support the work of top managers, assessing the impact of IS support for top managers and their capabilities on the bottom-line performance of firms has received little attention in existing literature. Drawing upon the resource based view of competitive advantage, this paper argues that firms that provide IS support for their top managers’ dynamic capabilities may enjoy competitive advantage and superior firm performance. The performance impact of IS support for two key dynamic capabilities of top managers (fast response and mental model building) under different (dynamic vs. stable) external environments …

Dao (Way)

The Way that can be experienced is not true;

The world that can be constructed is not true.

The Way manifests all that happens and may happen;

The world represents all that exists and may exist.

To experience without intention is to sense the world:

To experience with intention is to anticipate the world.

These two experiences are indistinguishable;

Their construction differs but their effect is the same.

Beyond the gate of experience flows the Way'.

Which is ever greater and more subtle than/he world.
