In today’s business world, storytelling with data is a powerful way to communicate, convince, and persuade. Such skills are highly desirable in all types of professions. Participants of this hands-on workshop will lean storytelling with Tableau, which skills can be applied to teaching subjects such as data analytics, visualization, and communication as well as presentations in our day-to-day job and research projects.

The topic of this panel is “Teaching and Research Directions for Business and MIS Programs”. Higher education in the US is transforming and evolving rapidly. Declining state budget for public schools means that tuition fees may have to be correspondingly increase. The state funding is down by around 40% compared to fiscal 1980. In fact, it is headed for zero! The cost of higher education has surged more than 500% since 1985. Rising costs of higher education means Americans owe nearly $1.3 trillion in student loan debt. The Communication & Information (SC) Directorate has centralized the collection and management of Information Technology (IT) requirements used by the center to request, acquire, and install IT related items using a Government Off The Shelf (GOTS) application called the Information Technology Requirements Database (ITRDB). While the ITRDB works sufficiently, a decision was made to pursue ways to increase accountability within the tool for requirements that request: hardware renewals, software renewals, and requirements that stop having forward progress in the process.

Enterprise IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) addresses the recovery and recycling of an enterprise’s IT assets that are near or at the end of their lifecycle. The aim of ITAD is to maximize the value of investment over the IT asset’s entire lifecycle while guaranteeing data security and protecting against environmental liability. Regulatory requirements mandate specific disposal methods for computing assets, and enterprises face significant risks if they fail to comply. The astronomical growth of data has necessitated the need for educating well-qualified data scientists to derive deep insights from large and complex data sets generated by organizations. In this paper, we present our interdisciplinary approach and experiences in teaching a Data Science course, the first of its kind offered at the Wright State University. Two faculty members from the Management Information Systems (MIS) and Computer Science (CS) departments designed and co-taught the course with perspectives from their previous research and teaching experiences.
