Panel: Brown University Redux - Effects Of Unionization On Graduate Student Employees: Faculty-Student Relations, Academic Freedom, And Pay, Sean Rogers, Adrienne Eaton, Paula Voos

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

In cases involving unionization of graduate student research and teaching assistants at private U.S. universities,

the National Labor Relations Board has, at times, denied collective bargaining rights on the presumption that

unionization would harm faculty--student relations and academic freedom. Using survey data collected from

PhD students in five academic disciplines across eight public U.S. universities, the authors compare

represented and non-represented graduate student employees in terms of faculty--student relations, academic

freedom, and pay. Unionization does not have the presumed negative effect on student outcomes, and in some

cases has a positive effect. Union-represented graduate student employees report higher levels of …

Collective Bargaining And Labor Representation For Higher Education In A “Right To Work” Environment, Thomas Auxter Oct 2016

Collective Bargaining And Labor Representation For Higher Education In A “Right To Work” Environment, Thomas Auxter

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

“Right to work” states are generally considered to be hostile environments for public employees to secure labor representation and maintain rights to fair treatment and just compensation through collective bargaining over an extended period of time. However, in one “right to work” state, Florida, we find examples of unions that have managed to survive and develop over decades. Some of them even managed to negotiate comprehensive contracts protecting the rights of public employees in all domains affecting “terms and conditions of employment,” including “shared governance” in decision-making about the work environment.

Research Panel: Monetary Compensation Of Full-Time Faculty At American Public Regional Universities: The Impact Of Geography And The Existence Of Collective Bargaining, Stephen Katsinas, Johnson Ogun, Nathaniel Bray

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

This work builds upon an analysis of regional universities that began in 2009, to build a geographically-based, quantifiable definition of the nation's regional universities. It builds on efforts begun by Katsinas (1993) to geographically map access oriented community colleges, which resulted in the geographic coding of Associate's Colleges as part of the 2005 and 2010 Basic Classification of Institutions of Higher Education published by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (Katsinas, Lacey, & Hardy, 2005).

Key findings

1. Wide variation in salaries and fringe benefits based upon geographic region served.

2. Wide variation in salaries and fringe benefits …

The State Of The Anti-Union Address: A Rhetorical Critique Of Select Service Worker Training Methods, Richard Ries Jan 2014

The State Of The Anti-Union Address: A Rhetorical Critique Of Select Service Worker Training Methods, Richard Ries

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is an interdisciplinary master's level thesis that explores links among technical writing, training manuals, surveillance, and anti-union rhetoric used with service workers in select American chains and franchises. Brief histories are provided, including those of technical writing, the rise of unions in America, and how technical writing became inextricably linked with labor. A major shift occurred in the 20th century when workers began interacting less with products and more with the public. The research focuses on training manuals, techniques, and rehearsed dialogues of McDonald's, Wal-Mart, Starbucks, Whole Foods, Panera, and Publix, though similar organizations are referenced. Service worker language, …

The Impact Of Unionization On University Performance: A Cross-Sectional Time Series Analysis, Mark K. Cassell Aug 2013

The Impact Of Unionization On University Performance: A Cross-Sectional Time Series Analysis, Mark K. Cassell

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

In 1968 the union movement in higher education was launched on the CUNY campuses in New York when CUNY held the first academic labor union election on an “integrated, heterogeneous, multi-campus system” (Ladd and Lipset 1973). In the nearly five decades since that historic election, unionization has grown to cover more than a third of all public four-year institutions and 40 percent of faculty at those public institutions (see Figure 1). While unionization is more common at larger institutions, Figure 1 illustrates that even among the smallest public institutions, unionization has increased over time.

The Utility Of Trouble: Leveling The Playing Field: Giving Municipal Officials The Tools To Moderate Health Insurance Costs, Robert L. Carey Feb 2010

The Utility Of Trouble: Leveling The Playing Field: Giving Municipal Officials The Tools To Moderate Health Insurance Costs, Robert L. Carey

Edward J. Collins Center for Public Management Publications

According to the research, Boston could have reduced its 2010 health premiums by between 15.6 and 17.1 percent, for a savings of between $41.4 and $45.4 million by joining the state’s Group Insurance Commission, more widely known as the GIC. The City is unable to join the GIC, however, without first receiving 70% union approval, according to state law. This requirement and the associated tradeoffs involved are a major barrier to municipal participation in the GIC. Several cities and towns including Boston have called for cities and towns to have the same ability as the state to design health insurance …

What Makes For Effective Labor Representation On Pension Boards?, Johanna Weststar, Anil Verma Dec 2007

What Makes For Effective Labor Representation On Pension Boards?, Johanna Weststar, Anil Verma

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

This article examines the efficacy of labor representation on pension boards. Using existing literature and interviews with labor trustees, this article develops a model where a more formal approach to recruitment and selection, skill acquisition, and accountability is hypothesized to aid labor trustees in achieving effective integration and representation on pension boards. Data indicate that labor trustees are placed in a challenging environment with insufficient support from their union, other trustees, or the board. These findings have important implications for the selection, training, and integration of labor trustees and the success of a labor agenda on pension issues.

Transnational Labor Mobilizing In Two Mexican Maquiladoras: The Struggle For Democratic Globalization, Victoria Carty Jan 2004

Transnational Labor Mobilizing In Two Mexican Maquiladoras: The Struggle For Democratic Globalization, Victoria Carty

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

The struggle to improve workers' rights in Mexican maquiladoras and export processing zones elsewhere in the world is central to the politics of global economic integration. State-centered development is increasingly compromised by supranational institutions and trade agreements. Meanwhile, multinational corporations are relocating at an unprecedented rate to overseas locations. Export processing zones are notorious for poor working conditions and result in a "race to the bottom." The maquila sector in Mexico is a prime example of this phenomenon. This article uses two case studies to examine ways in which grassroots organizing has successfully resisted low wages and poor working conditions …

Teacher Pay And Teacher Quality, Dale Ballou, Michael Podgursky Jan 1997

Teacher Pay And Teacher Quality, Dale Ballou, Michael Podgursky

Upjohn Press

Ballou and Podgursky offer solid economic analysis on issues surrounding the debate over whether increasing salaries for teachers leads to a more qualified teaching workforce. The authors find little evidence to support the link between increased salaries and teacher quality, then address two questions: (1) What went wrong? and (2) Which reforms are likely to meet with increased success?

Labor Law, Industrial Relations And Employee Choice: The State Of The Workplace In The 1990s: Hearings Of The Commission On The Future Of Worker-Management Relations, 1993-94, Richard N. Block, John Beck, Daniel H. Kruger Jan 1996

Labor Law, Industrial Relations And Employee Choice: The State Of The Workplace In The 1990s: Hearings Of The Commission On The Future Of Worker-Management Relations, 1993-94, Richard N. Block, John Beck, Daniel H. Kruger

Upjohn Press

Block, Beck and Kruger present detailed examples from the testimony given during the Commission on the Future of Worker-Management Relations (commonly called the Dunlop Commission) national and regional hearings. The Commission, by hearing from a wide range of stakeholders, sought to define the state of industrial relations and labor law in the U.S. during the 1990s. Because the Commission's final reports were concerned with policy matters, they only briefly summarized the testimony. This volume draws deeply from the testimony, citing many examples that clearly illustrate the wide variety of relationships between workers and management today. In addition, it shows how …
