Organizing Faculty Unions In A Right-To-Work Environment, Thomas Auxter Jan 2017

Organizing Faculty Unions In A Right-To-Work Environment, Thomas Auxter

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Right-to-work states are generally considered to be hostile environments for public employees who try to organize and secure union representation in order to maintain rights to fair treatment and just compensation through collective bargaining over an extended period of time. However, in one right-to-work state, Florida, we find examples of unions that have managed to survive and develop over decades. To understand the significance of this phenomenon, we need to ask several questions. What conditions make this possible? What kinds of unions are favored by these conditions? What goals can unions realistically expect to set? What would it take for public …

What Factors Affect The Time It Takes To Negotiate Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreements?, Daniel J. Julius, Nicholas Digiovanni Jr. Jan 2017

What Factors Affect The Time It Takes To Negotiate Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreements?, Daniel J. Julius, Nicholas Digiovanni Jr.

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Two straight-forward but complex questions are addressed: how much time does it take to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement covering faculty in post-secondary institutions and what factors influence in the length of time involved? Are there any responses which will make sense? Can we offer any guidance? Permit first a few anecdotal stories and then a discussion about the internal and external factors that inform the answer to these questions and why the best answer may well be, “it depends.”

The Impact Of Collective Bargaining And Local Appropriations On Faculty Salaries And Benefits At U.S. Community Colleges, Barry R. Mayhall, Stephen G. Katsinas, Nathaniel J. Bray Jan 2017

The Impact Of Collective Bargaining And Local Appropriations On Faculty Salaries And Benefits At U.S. Community Colleges, Barry R. Mayhall, Stephen G. Katsinas, Nathaniel J. Bray

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

This study examines the impact of collective bargaining and local appropriations on salaries and fringe benefits of full-time faculty at U.S. community colleges. A more nuanced view is offered, by drawing appropriate institutional peer-group comparisons of rural, suburban, and urban community colleges to more accurately and precisely show just how much of a difference the presence or lack of collective bargaining, local appropriations, and the combined impact of both, actually make. Further, given the technical nature of the few comprehensive studies of fringe benefits for community college faculty, we integrate the findings of King and Maldanado.

Monetary Compensation Of Full-Time Faculty At American Public Regional Universities: The Impact Of Geography And The Existence Of Collective Bargaining, Stephen G. Katsinas, Johnson A. Ogun, Nathaniel J. Bray Jan 2017

Monetary Compensation Of Full-Time Faculty At American Public Regional Universities: The Impact Of Geography And The Existence Of Collective Bargaining, Stephen G. Katsinas, Johnson A. Ogun, Nathaniel J. Bray

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

This paper examines monetary compensation of 127,222 full-time faculty employed by the 390 regional universities in the United States who are members of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Compensation data published by the U.S. Department of Education and organizations concerned with faculty, including the American Association of University Professors and others, typically lump all four-year public university faculty together, ignoring well-known differences in teaching workloads at different types of public four-year universities (four instead of two courses taught each term, etc.). Further, many compensation studies do not examine fringe benefits, which are 30 percent of total monetary …

The Matriculation Of The Micro-Unit On The College Campus, Barnett L. Horowitz Jan 2017

The Matriculation Of The Micro-Unit On The College Campus, Barnett L. Horowitz

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

To the extent the world of higher education was following the National Labor Relations Board there was probably limited focus on the Board’s Specialty Healthcare case allowing for the so-called “micro-unit”. Board decisions as to the employee status of tenure track faculty or football players or graduate teaching or research assistants were likely to be of greater interest. Yet the recent holding in Columbia University that students providing instructional services were also employees subject to the Act’s coverage put the micro-unit in play on the college campus. Almost immediately after this decision petitions were filed at Yale seeking representation of …

The Winds Of Changes Shift: An Analysis Of Recent Growth In Bargaining Units And Representation Efforts In Higher Education, William A. Herbert

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

This article analyzes data accumulated during the first three quarters of 2016 regarding completed and pending questions of representation involving faculty and student employees in higher education. It is part of a larger and continuing National Center research project that tracks faculty and graduate student employee unionization growth and representation efforts at private and public institutions of higher learning since January 1, 2013.

The data presented in this article demonstrates that the rate of newly certified units at private colleges and universities since January 1, 2016 far outpaces new units in the public sector. There has been a 25.9% increase …

Pilots’ Perceptions Of Justice And Job Identification, Robert A. Goehlich, Ralf Bebenroth Jan 2017

Pilots’ Perceptions Of Justice And Job Identification, Robert A. Goehlich, Ralf Bebenroth

Publications

This article sheds light on pilots’ perceptions of justice and their job identification. The research investigates pilots’ perceptions of the fairness with which they are treated, how these perceptions might influence their identification with their jobs and whether this identification influences operational safety. The methodological approach integrates the pilot-organisational behavioural model introduced in this research into two commonly known models of the human factor in aviation: the ‘Software-Hardware-Environment-Liveware (pilot)-Liveware (team)’ – or SHELL – model and the ‘Swiss cheese’ model. The article includes an outline regarding aviation safety and recommendations for applying our approach toother transportation industries.

Some Reflections On The Question Of ‘Finality’ In Irish Industrial Relations Disputes, Brian Sheehan Jan 2017

Some Reflections On The Question Of ‘Finality’ In Irish Industrial Relations Disputes, Brian Sheehan

Irish Business Journal

Trade unions in the private sector and the commercial semi-states have rejected voluntarist Labour Court recommendations in the industrial relations arena in a significant number of high-profile cases in recent times. Conversely, in parts of the public sector, there has been a move towards the adoption of binding dispute resolution systems. Brian Sheehan suggests that respect for the state’s dispute resolution agencies and need for expertise and experience in dispute management is as great as ever.

Quran & Capitalism: The Compliance Of Income Share Agreements With Shari'ah, Kamil Fadel Jan 2017

Quran & Capitalism: The Compliance Of Income Share Agreements With Shari'ah, Kamil Fadel

Honors Program Theses

Income share agreements (ISAs) are a necessary option to finance higher educations. ISAs eschew fixed payments for the flexibility of income based repayments between a student and an investor. ISA contracts stipulate that, in return for educational financing, a student promises a percentage of their future income for an agreed upon time frame. Should the student not possess sufficient income, their obligations are $0.00. Among the fastest growing financial sectors is Islamic financing. Islamic finance abhors gambling, deception, and usury and upholds the public good as its ultimate aim. As Islamic finance grows globally, an opportunity to offer shari’ah compliant …

Analysis Of Union Safety: Determining Relationships Between Union Membership And Injury And Fatality Rates, Madelyn K. Street Jan 2017

Analysis Of Union Safety: Determining Relationships Between Union Membership And Injury And Fatality Rates, Madelyn K. Street

Online Theses and Dissertations

In under two centuries the labor union transformed the American workplace, improving wages, benefits, employee engagement, and safety. In more recent years, the government and other organizations have caught up in focusing on safety. Countless studies have been conducted and determined that unions have a significant positive impact on safety compared to work environments absent of a union. Using Bureau of Labor Statistics data for 2006-2015, an investigation into the trends of union membership and injuries and fatalities reported in the United States was conducted. It was determined that there was not significant correlation between increased union membership and improved …

Getting a job as soon as possible after applying for vocational rehabilitation (VR) services is important for job seekers with intellectual disabilities. This DataNote describes how long it takes for job seekers with intellectual disabilities to go through the steps from application for VR services to determination of eligibility, completion of an individual employment plan, and closure into integrated employment.

Garment Sector Health Interventions In Cambodia: A Comprehensive Review, Molyaneth Heng, Ashish Bajracharya Jan 2017

Garment Sector Health Interventions In Cambodia: A Comprehensive Review, Molyaneth Heng, Ashish Bajracharya

Reproductive Health

As part of the WorkerHealth project, the Evidence Project/Population Council conducted a comprehensive review of garment sector health interventions, particularly reproductive health (RH) and family planning (FP)–focused projects, in Cambodia during the last five years. The results from the review support WorkerHealth’s objective of enabling evidence-based decisionmaking and programming related to the health and well-being of female garment factory workers in Cambodia, by documenting the range of garment sector health interventions and identifying best practices and gaps in programming and evaluation. This review identified a number of priority actions for current and future garment sector health interventions to consider in …

Health Needs, Health Seeking Pathways, And Drivers Of Health Seeking Behaviors Of Female Garment Factory Workers In Cambodia: Findings From A Qualitative Study In Phnom Penh And Kandal Provinces, Population Council, The Evidence Project

Reproductive Health

Existing information on Cambodian garment factory workers’ (GFWs) barriers to health services has generally come from project implementation documents or general baseline studies of these projects, rather than independent, rigorous studies that specifically examine the health needs and health-seeking behaviors of workers. Since previous studies did not include specific indicators related to workers’ health needs and health-seeking behaviors, they cannot offer a complete picture of these important issues. To fill this critical knowledge gap, in partnership with the National Institute of Public Health, the Evidence Project/Population Council conducted a formative qualitative study under the USAID-funded WorkerHealth project to improve the …

Workplace Health And The Garment Sector In Cambodia, Bunmey Yat, Carolyn Rodehau, David Wofford, Ashish Bajracharya Jan 2017

Workplace Health And The Garment Sector In Cambodia, Bunmey Yat, Carolyn Rodehau, David Wofford, Ashish Bajracharya

Reproductive Health

In Cambodia, there has been considerable investment in improving the well-being of factory workers. Understanding the key stakeholders and their roles in improving worker health is essential for policy change and ensuring that interventions achieve sustainable, long-term impact in and around the workplace. This policy brief presents selected findings from a stakeholder and situational analysis undertaken by the Cambodia Worker Health Coalition (WorkerHealth) to understand the stakeholder landscape and policy environment for women’s health in the garment industry in Cambodia, with the objective of identifying leading stakeholders and their relationships, as well as strategies and opportunities for collaboration. Collaboration and …

Protests, Pageants, And Publications: Narratives Of Labor Agitators, 1913-1914, Jayme Edmund Jan 2017

Protests, Pageants, And Publications: Narratives Of Labor Agitators, 1913-1914, Jayme Edmund

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In the vast historiography on the American labor movement workers have been treated as noble artisans, brave unionists, martyrs to the cause of unionization, and losers in the triumph of the “free market”. They have not been treated as historians producing their own stories. In crafting their own narratives labor activists acted as historians, reaching beyond recent events to contextualize their struggles and create a narrative that would mobilize both labor and non-labor audiences behind their goals. They offered a vision of the past as leading to present or recent problems and framed unions or labor solidarity as the solution …

To Work More Or Less? The Impact Of Taxes And Life Satisfaction On The Motivation To Work In Continental And Eastern Europe, Orkhan Nadirov, Khatai Aliyev, Bruce Dehning Jan 2017

To Work More Or Less? The Impact Of Taxes And Life Satisfaction On The Motivation To Work In Continental And Eastern Europe, Orkhan Nadirov, Khatai Aliyev, Bruce Dehning

Accounting Faculty Articles and Research

Using country-level data from 2000-2013, we test the relationship between life satisfaction (measured as how people evaluate their life as a whole rather than their current feelings) and the motivation to work (measured as aggregate hours of work). Our hypothesis is that even after controlling for average labor income tax rates in countries with high and low average hours worked, there is a significant negative association between the motivation to work and life satisfaction. The main findings of this paper are that the increase in the motivation to work per employee comes at the expense of life satisfaction, and differences …

Marital Status And Earnings Management, Gilles Hillary, Sterling Huang, Yanping Xu Jan 2017

Marital Status And Earnings Management, Gilles Hillary, Sterling Huang, Yanping Xu

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

In this note, we examine the effect of CEO marital status on the riskiness of financial reporting. Using multiple proxies, we find that firms headed by a single CEO display a higher degree of earnings management than those headed by a married CEO. The effect is economically significant. Our results persist in an instrumental variable regression, suggesting that our results are not driven by innate heterogeneity in preferences.

Nonprofit Pay In A Competitive Market: Wage Penalty Or Premium?, Christian King, Gregory B. Lewis Jan 2017

Nonprofit Pay In A Competitive Market: Wage Penalty Or Premium?, Christian King, Gregory B. Lewis

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Two competing theories argue that the nonprofit sector pays differently: Nonprofit employees may accept lower pay to be able to do meaningful work for a good cause, or they may earn higher pay due to nonprofit organizations’ tax exemptions and weaker incentives to hold down wages. To test these opposing expectations, we use the 2005-2013 American Community Surveys to examine pay differences among registered nurses working for nonprofit, for-profit, and public hospitals. We also test hypotheses that public and nonprofit hospitals have smaller pay disparities by gender, race, and relationship status. We find that pay is highest in nonprofit hospitals, …
