On Power And Equity: Toward A Working-Class Rhetoric, Omar Schwartz
On Power And Equity: Toward A Working-Class Rhetoric, Omar Schwartz
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
The working-class in the United States has been, and continues to be, systematically excluded from normative political representation and is allowed little opportunity to contribute to the terms and conditions of its social existence (Henwood, 1987; Moberg, 1992). While few workers today resist such marginalization, this has not been always the case. During the formative period of U.S. labor consciousness (from the end of the Civil War until the First World War), the political alienation of labor was routinely challenged by workers who relied extensively (and illegally) on collective self-help in their pursuit of economic justice. With this …
Organizing In The Garment Industry In Mexico: Implications For New Social Movement Theory, Victoria Carty
Organizing In The Garment Industry In Mexico: Implications For New Social Movement Theory, Victoria Carty
Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
This paper examines attempts to improve workers' rights in the Maquila Industry in Mexico by using two case studies. It analyzes the struggles that recently occurred at the Kukdong and Duro plants. The underlying question of the research is how to balance the co-existence of market economies with effective means to ensure adequate conditions for workers, and most importantly, ensuring their right to freedom of association. Under recent forms of global economic restructuring, the state is often unwilling or unable to uphold workers' rights. To combat the present form of corporate-driven global capitalism, workers in the South, in solidarity with …

Gum-Dipped: Reconstructing An Akron Neighborhood, Joyce Dyer
Gum-Dipped: Reconstructing An Akron Neighborhood, Joyce Dyer
University of Akron Press Publications
Gum-Dipped: A Daughter Remembers Rubber Town tells the story of growing up in the rubber community of Firestone Park in Akron, Ohio—the former Rubber Capital of the World. The book begins with the rededication of the bronze Harvey Firestone statue on August 3, 2000, at the Centennial celebration for the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company. The statue—perched high on a hill at the entrance to Firestone Park, the residential community Harvey built for his workers in 1915—was sacred to the author, Joyce Coyne Dyer, and her father, Tom Coyne, during the fifties, a time when the Coynes worshipped the company …
Silent No More: The Voice Of A Farm Worker Press, 1964–1975, Carlos R. Guerrero
Silent No More: The Voice Of A Farm Worker Press, 1964–1975, Carlos R. Guerrero
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The dissertation critically examines the content of El Malcriado , a movement newspaper published by the Farm Worker Press in Delano, California between 1964 and 1975. El Malcriado resulted from the efforts of people attempting to create a cultural space to challenge and reconstruct the asymmetrical relations of power between farm workers and California agribusiness. Within the pages of the newspaper, its articles, cartoons, featured news stories, and editorials convey a narrative that points to the struggle of defining a farm worker position in opposition to the status quo of California agribusiness.
A discourse content analysis of the newspaper between …

New Social Movements And The Struggle For Worker’S Rights In The Maquila Industry, Victoria Carty
New Social Movements And The Struggle For Worker’S Rights In The Maquila Industry, Victoria Carty
Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
"Campaigns to improve worker’s rights in export processing zones (EPZs), also referred to the maquila industry in Latin America, is an important topic analytically and politically. On theoretical and practical levels, the co-existence of market economies with effective means to ensure adequate working conditions for workers is a critical question. Underlying the issue is a vigorous debate regarding how the global economy should be governed; who or what should govern it, and whose interest is should serve (Faux, 2002)."
The Response To Left-Wing Radicalism In Portland, Oregon, From 1917 To 1941, Andrew Nils Bryans
The Response To Left-Wing Radicalism In Portland, Oregon, From 1917 To 1941, Andrew Nils Bryans
Dissertations and Theses
In the early twentieth century industrial, political, and social conflicts occurred throughout the United States during a period of rapid industrialization and modernization. Examples of these disputes, such as labor strikes and political struggles, have frequently been the subjects of scholarly investigations. Yet certain aspects of these conflicts remain relatively unknown, particularly on the community and local levels. The purpose of the present study was to explore and provide the context for a better understanding of the motives behind the responses of antiradicals to left-wing radicalism. What were some of the social, cultural, and economic motivations of local antiradicals in …
