The Effect Of Cultural Intelligence On Employee Performance In International Hospitality Industries: A Case From The Hotel Sector In Egypt, Hadia Fakhreldin

Business Administration

This study highlights the importance of cultural intelligence in international business. Employees with high levels of cultural intelligence (CI) achieve high performance levels, therefore CI should be a screening criteria and a training goal within multinational companies. A five stars hotel is chosen as the field for testing/examining the theoretical framework identified in the literature. The cultural intelligence level of employees in this hotel is first determined through a questionnaire technique using a valid and reliable test (the Cultural Quotient Scale). Then the performance of these employees is identified through examining selected criteria in their performance review. To verify the …

Subsidiary Strategy And The Role Of The Subsidiary Manager : Integrating The Middle Manager Perspective, Donal O'Brien Apr 2011

Subsidiary Strategy And The Role Of The Subsidiary Manager : Integrating The Middle Manager Perspective, Donal O'Brien

Conference Papers

Subsidiary strategy is a concept which has emerged in international business literature but research has so far failed to explain how subsidiary managers develop strategy under the constraints of the paradoxical pressures they face in today’s Multinational Enterprises (MNE). On the one hand current trends suggest that (MNE) are developing into more global business structures which are reducing the power and influence of subsidiary managers (Buckley, 2009, Buckley & Ghauri, 2004, Mudambi, 2008). The result of these trends, are that the market orientated aspects of subsidiary strategy are becoming constrained and to some degree taken out of the hands of …

Boeing And Airbus: Duopoly In Jeopardy?, John Olienyk, Robert J. Carbaugh

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

For decades, Boeing and Airbus have struggled for dominance in the large commercial aircraft market. This paper considers the nature of these rulings and the future competitive environment in the global jetliner industry.

Douglas Faggioli, president and CEO of Nature's Sunshine Products (NSP) made the above remarks as he accepted, on behalf of NSP, a 2004 "100 Best Corporate Citizens" award from Business Ethics magazine. NSP received the award two years in a row. Less than two years later, NSP would discover a bribery scheme in its Brazil operations that would expose it to Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) enforcement under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). Faggioli and the company's CFO, Craig Huff, along with NSP, would be plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit, and the SEC would fine each officer $25,000. …

Executive Compensation: The Role Of Shari’A Compliance, William Martin, Karen Ahmed

College of Business Faculty and Staff Works

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this paper is to illuminate issues surrounding executive compensation as it relates to current understandings of Islamic business law. Methodology We review the emerging bodies of literature in the fields of executive compensation and opinions of stock options under Shari’a law. Findings It appears that the trend in offering employee stock options as part of a Shari’a compliant compensation package is acceptable in most cases, yet because of its close association with the more problematic idea of derivative transactions, the company must be vigilant in obtaining the approval from its Shari’a Standards Board before offering …

Impact Of Adopting The International Financial Reporting Standards On Book-Tax Differences: Evidence From Dutch Listed Companies, Jinky Lunaspe Dagoon

Theses Digitization Project

This study empirically examines how the adoption of new accounting standards impacts book-tax differences (BTDs) and analyzes the role of changes in accounting rules as an important function of the book-tax income gap. The primary objective of this study is to present preliminary evidence on how the adoption of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) impacts the book-tax income gap in the case of the public firms in the Netherlands, a country with low book tax alignment. This objective is accomplished through empirical investigation of data on book-tax differences (BTDS) from a sample of Dutch firms listed in the Eupnext …

Consumption Behavior Of Chinese Urban Residents During Economic Transition: Intermittent And Cyclical Fluctuations, Ilan Alon, Xiaotong Jin, Shengliang Deng

Faculty Publications

Although in recent years researchers have attempted to examine the consumption behavior of Chinese residents during economic transition, there still exists a clear gap in the literature to adequately explain the consumption behavior of Chinese urban residents during economic restructuring. This paper, attempting to shed some light on this relationship, proposes a hypothesis of Chinese urban resident consumption behavior during economic transition in China and examines the hypothesis using quantitative models. The conclusion suggests that the consumption of Chinese urban residents is guided by traditional Chinese civilization, and this results in intermittent and cyclical fluctuations in consumption behavior during systemic …

The analysis draws on a unique database of 476 Czech-based automotive firms with 20 and more employees in the broadly defined automotive industry, a survey of 274 automotive firms and twenty-five in-depth company interviews. In addition to assessing changes in the extent of automotive R&D, we analyze the most important locational factors of automotive R&D in Czechia and its regional distribution in the country. We examine changes in the spatial concentration of automotive R&D between 1998 …

Creating Trust In Piranha-Infested Waters: The Confluence Of Buyer, Supplier And Host Country Contexts, Akbar Zaheer, Darcy Fudge Kamal Jan 2011

Creating Trust In Piranha-Infested Waters: The Confluence Of Buyer, Supplier And Host Country Contexts, Akbar Zaheer, Darcy Fudge Kamal

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Research by Dyer and Chu (2000) suggests that trust in exchange varies significantly across borders and influences the level of trust in cross-border exchange dyads. However, while a good start, research has yet to develop the concept that not only can the countries of origin of the partners to the exchange influence the nature and outcomes of dyadic trust, but also the country where the exchange dyad is located. Furthermore, such home and host country differences may interact with dyad-level differences in trust creation capabilities and influence trust violation and repair. We develop a framework and propositions along these lines.

Organizational Learning And Capabilities For Onshore And Offshore Business Process Outsourcing, Jonathan W. Whitaker, Sunil Mithas, M. S. Krishnan Jan 2011

Organizational Learning And Capabilities For Onshore And Offshore Business Process Outsourcing, Jonathan W. Whitaker, Sunil Mithas, M. S. Krishnan

Management Faculty Publications

This paper identifies and analyzes firm-level characteristics that facilitate onshore and offshore business process outsourcing (BPO). We use organizational learning and capabilities to develop a conceptual model. We test the conceptual model with archival data on a broad cross section of U. S. firms. Our empirical findings indicate that firms with experience in onshore information technology (IT) outsourcing and capabilities related to IT coordination applications and process codification are more likely to engage in BPO, and firms with experience in internationalization are more likely to engage in offshore BPO. We also find that IT coordination applications have a greater impact …

Offshoring, Outsourcing, And Strategy In The Global Firm, Stephen Tallman Jan 2011

Offshoring, Outsourcing, And Strategy In The Global Firm, Stephen Tallman

Management Faculty Publications

Offshore outsourcing of many of the activities of the firm has become a major issue of concern in welfare economics, politics, business management, and international business scholarship. From both practical and scholarly perspectives, though, we must recognize that this is not a new phenomenon, and that neither outsourcing nor offshoring is necessarily the problem that has been represented in the popular and scholarly press (Contractor et al., 2010: Engardio, 2006). The production of goods in locations other than those in which they are sold has been an established strategy of multinational firms for decades--as has the subset of situations in …

Forecasting Empty Container Volumes, Rafael Diaz, Wayne Talley, Mandar Tulpule Jan 2011

Forecasting Empty Container Volumes, Rafael Diaz, Wayne Talley, Mandar Tulpule

Economics Faculty Publications

The accumulation and repositioning of empty containers have become acute problems for container ports and are expected to intensify in the future given the expected growth in trade imbalances among trading nations. These problems are major costs and operational challenges for container ports. More accurate forecasting of volumes of port empty containers will enable container ports to develop more cost efficient plans for the repositioning of empty containers. This paper compares the Tioga Group, United Nations and Winters method (utilizing empty container volumes of three U.S. container ports) in forecasting volumes of port empty containers. The Winters method is found …

The Stability Of Offshore Outsourcing Relationships: The Role Of Relation Specificity And Client Control, Stephan Manning, Arie Y. Lewin, Marc Schuerch Jan 2011

The Stability Of Offshore Outsourcing Relationships: The Role Of Relation Specificity And Client Control, Stephan Manning, Arie Y. Lewin, Marc Schuerch

Management and Marketing Faculty Publication Series

Offshore outsourcing of administrative and technical services has become a mainstream business practice. Increasing commoditization of business services and growing client experience with outsourcing have created a range of competitive service delivery options for client firms. Yet, data from the Offshoring Research Network (ORN) suggests that, despite increasing market options and growing client quality and cost efficiency expectations, clients typically renew provider contracts and develop longer-term relationships with providers. Based on ORN data, this paper explores drivers of this phenomenon. The findings suggest that providers promote contract renewal by making client specific investments in software, IT infrastructure and training, and …

Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions In Emerging Markets After The 2007 Economic Crisis., Amani John Mayage

Student Works (2010-2019)

This paper reviews the cross-border mergers and acquisitions (CBMA) activities during the period 2000-2010 of the four Southeast Asian countries most impacted by the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Indonesia. The selection of case of study was based on economic development categories. The selected countries are categorized as emerging markets within the ASEAN countries; and both are representative of the impact of the 1997 economic crisis. Due to these factors Singapore and Korea have been excluded. After the 1997 economic crisis that impacted most South East Asia countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand introduced various measures …
