The United States healthcare system relies heavily on Medicaid, which serves nearly 80 million people and accounts for a substantial share of both state and federal budgets. This study employs a range of forecasting methods, including ARIMA, Holt's linear trend, polynomial regressions (degree 2 and 4), Prophet, and piecewise linear regression, as well as machine learning models such as random forest, gradient boosting, and support vector regression, to analyze the growth of Medicaid expenditures. Using data from 1966 to 2024, the analysis identifies historical patterns and evaluates model performance with Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) and related metrics to project …
The Effects Of Restaurant Cancellation Policies And No-Show Awareness Campaigns On Reservation Behaviors, Esther Kim, Jason Tang, Minji Kim, Eun Joo Kim
The Effects Of Restaurant Cancellation Policies And No-Show Awareness Campaigns On Reservation Behaviors, Esther Kim, Jason Tang, Minji Kim, Eun Joo Kim
Department of Hospitality and Tourism Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This study addresses the persisting issue of restaurant reservation no-shows by applying the availability heuristic principle to analyze booking behaviors. Three experiments identified cancellation policy features and factors influencing booking and no-show behaviors. Findings confirmed that a cancellation barrier (i.e., strict policy and complex cancellation method) decreases no-show intentions and negatively affects booking intentions. This research suggests that a lenient cancellation policy, an easy cancellation method, and an awareness campaign can encourage positive guest booking behavior and reduce no-shows. Applying the availability heuristic principle to restaurant management, the current research enhances the understanding of psychological factors affecting guest decisions and …
Tackling No-Shows In Fine Dining: Insights Into Cancellation Policies And Consumer Awareness Campaigns, Esther Kim, Jason Tang
Tackling No-Shows In Fine Dining: Insights Into Cancellation Policies And Consumer Awareness Campaigns, Esther Kim, Jason Tang
Department of Hospitality and Tourism Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This research aims to identify how fine dining restaurants can effectively implement reservation cancellation policies to address the issue of no-shows by applying equity theory, the dual entitlement principle, and social cognitive theory. Two experiments identified cancellation policy elements that influence restaurant evaluations and reservation behaviors. Findings revealed that cancellation policies negatively influence restaurant evaluations, and that policy strictness and awareness can attenuate this relationship via perceived fairness while enhancing the likelihood to book reservations and honor reservations. This research suggests that restaurants can benefit from implementing lenient cancellation policies and introducing awareness of the adverse impact of no-shows to …

Income inequality is a prominent contributor to health disparities in the U.S. As a leading capitalist nation, the U.S. registers the highest healthcare expenditure among developed countries yet grapples with widening income disparities. The chasm between the rich and the underprivileged has expanded significantly in recent decades, profoundly impacting American society. This study explores the nuances of income inequality, its ramifications, and potential remedies, analyzed through the Gini Coefficient. Advanced forecasting models, including AutoRegressive Integrated Moving Average and Regression Analysis, are employed to anticipate future patterns. The research highlights the value of healthcare analytics in understanding the complexities of income …

Productivity losses caused by absenteeism at work cost U.S. employers billions of dollars each year. In addition, employers typically spend a considerable amount of time managing employees who perform poorly. By using predictive analytics and machine learning algorithms, organizations can make better decisions, thereby increasing organizational productivity, reducing costs, and im-proving efficiency. Thus, in this paper we propose hybrid optimization methods in order to find the most parsimonious model for absenteeism classification. We utilized data from a Brazilian courier company. In order to categorize absenteeism classes, we preprocessed the data, selected the attributes via multiple methods, balanced the dataset using …

With virtual reality (VR) video game users beginning to see beta advertisements within game play, this conceptual article adds a needed digital and interactive marketing research foundation to the new construct of VR in-game advertising (IGA) activation. New consumer VR technology continues to disrupt traditional media as a $7.7 billion USD industry, that is expected to reach $57.55 billion by 2027. As such, marketing researchers must continue to evolve and understand the interdisciplinary VR research evolution as many VR users are likely to view IGA as intrusive. IGA and VR are not new constructs, but IGA within VR is unique …
B Corps’ Social Media Communications During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Through The Lens Of The Triple Bottom Line, Manveer Mann, Sang-Eun Byun, Whitney Ginder
B Corps’ Social Media Communications During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Through The Lens Of The Triple Bottom Line, Manveer Mann, Sang-Eun Byun, Whitney Ginder

The COVID-19 pandemic and rising demand for transparency has heightened the importance of sustainability communications on social media to generate deeper stakeholder engagement. Although B Corporations (B Corps), businesses committed to the triple bottom line (TBL), could serve as a catalyst for sustainable development, little is known about how they communicate on social media during a crisis. Therefore, we examined social media communications of B Corps to (1) identify salient topics and themes, (2) analyze how these themes align with the TBL, and (3) evaluate social media performance against industry benchmarks. We focused on the apparel, footwear, and accessories (AFA) …
The Windfall Gain Effect: Using A Surprise Discount To Stimulate Add-On Purchases, Esther Kim, Sarah Tanford
The Windfall Gain Effect: Using A Surprise Discount To Stimulate Add-On Purchases, Esther Kim, Sarah Tanford
Department of Hospitality and Tourism Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
How can the business maximize revenue while providing discounts? This research suggests that hospitality operators may stimulate add-on purchases with the adoption of surprise discounts. Two experiments investigated factors that influence hospitality consumers’ ancillary spending. Study 1 tested the discount and product type effects on additional spending intentions for a cruise booking. Study 2 identified how the depth of surprise discount and add-on product type influence consumers’ add-on purchase decisions for an online hotel booking. The findings indicate that a surprise discount and hedonic items induce consumers’ unplanned purchases. A hedonic add-on item is preferred over a utilitarian item when …
The Influence Of Travel Experience On Mature Travelers’ Quality Of Life, Yawei Wang, Francis A. Mcguire, Bin Zhou
The Influence Of Travel Experience On Mature Travelers’ Quality Of Life, Yawei Wang, Francis A. Mcguire, Bin Zhou
Department of Hospitality and Tourism Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of past travel experience (i.e., number of trips and number of days away from home in last year), and on mature travelers’ quality of life (i.e., self-perceived health and global life satisfaction). A total number of 217 respondents (50+) in a southern state were used in this study. Path analysis (PROC CALIS in SAS) was performed to test the proposed model. An estimation of the proposed theoretical model revealed that the model fit the data. However, the model should be further examined and applied with caution.
