Are Female Executives Receiving Adequate Capital Financing? An Analysis Of Gender Disparity On Venture Capital Funding, Lina Aluzri Jan 2020

Are Female Executives Receiving Adequate Capital Financing? An Analysis Of Gender Disparity On Venture Capital Funding, Lina Aluzri

CMC Senior Theses

This paper examines the inequalities that exist between male and female CEO’s and other top executives by analyzing the effect of gender diversity when it comes to venture capital funding and firm performance. Building off of previous research, I focus on three major areas. First, I utilize data from 2016 to 2018 found in PitchBook and Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS). Second, I explore the effect of firm performance prior to funding on the amount of capital received. Third, I narrow down the analysis of firms to 364 companies that were once venture capital backed and have successfully exited with …

How Deposit Insurers' Fund Managers Compute Coverage Limits, Noel Trevor Patrick Nunes Jan 2020

How Deposit Insurers' Fund Managers Compute Coverage Limits, Noel Trevor Patrick Nunes

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractFollowing the 2007–2008 global financial crisis, the Financial Stability Board identified several areas of weakness in the delivery of deposit insurance, among other interventions. One of the key recommendations related to the use of data by deposit insurers to make their coverage limits more robust. The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental cross-sectional study was to test the impact of 4 data sets—aggregate bank risk, the aggregate value of insured deposits, the DIF size, and premium levy—on the deposit insurance coverage limit. The investigation comprised a pilot study and a survey of deposit insurers from the International Association of Deposit Insurers …

Environmental Governance For Whom? Examining The Political, Institutional, Fiscal, And Legal Determinants Of State Environmental Agency Budget Policy In The Us, Andrew R. Duggan Jan 2020

Environmental Governance For Whom? Examining The Political, Institutional, Fiscal, And Legal Determinants Of State Environmental Agency Budget Policy In The Us, Andrew R. Duggan

Theses and Dissertations

Budgets are a prospective tool of governance, and appropriations are a planning vehicle reflecting: bureaucracies’ values, complex interactions, collective preferences, political influences, and available resources. Research spanning 30 years finds that environmental pollution is a key determinant of environmental budgets in the US, though myriad factors, actors, and subsystems are important to consider. Due to federalism and devolution of responsibilities and authorities, environmental governance falls largely to the states. While the dynamics that shape state environmental budget policy have received scholarly interest, theoretically-driven examinations of environmental appropriations remain limited within the public budgeting and environmental policy literature.

Using panel data …

Newman/Martoma: The Insider Trading Law's Impasse And The Promise Of Congressional Action, Tai H. Park Jan 2020

Newman/Martoma: The Insider Trading Law's Impasse And The Promise Of Congressional Action, Tai H. Park

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

The prohibition against insider trading is a judge-made law that has evolved for over fifty years, and has reached a critical impasse in two recent decisions in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals: United States v. Newman and United States v. Martoma. Judges of the Second Circuit are sharply divided over what conduct constitutes improper trading on material nonpublic information (“MNPI”), leaving the law in profound disarray. At bottom, the disagreement stems from a decades-old split within the judiciary about how to (1) ensure a fair securities marketplace, while (2) enabling institutional analysts to probe for corporate information in furtherance …

Multilateral Transparency For Security Markets Through Dlt, David C. Donald, Mahdi H. Miraz Jan 2020

Multilateral Transparency For Security Markets Through Dlt, David C. Donald, Mahdi H. Miraz

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

For decades, changing technology and policy choices have worked to fragment securities markets, rendering them so dark that neither ownership nor real-time price of securities are generally visible to all parties multilaterally. The policies in the U.S. National Market System and the EU Market in Financial Instruments Directive— together with universal adoption of the indirect holding system— have pushed Western securities markets into a corner from which escape to full transparency has seemed either impossible or prohibitively expensive. Although the reader has a right to skepticism given the exaggerated promises surrounding blockchain in recent years, we demonstrate in this paper …

The Layers Of Digital Financial Innovation: Charting A Regulatory Response, Teresa Rodriguez De Las Heras Ballell

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

The increasing penetration of digital technologies in financial markets is evidenced by promising adoption rates among users, expanding presence of fintech firms and bigtech providing techfin services, and the growing use of fintech solutions by incumbents. The increasingly popular term "fintech" captures the accelerated transformation of contemporary financial markets driven and enabled by technology, and encapsulates its multifarious potential impact on services, market structures, and business models. This Article first aims to devise and propose an analytical framework to understand the digital challenges to financial regulation based on the "layers of digital financial innovation" theory. Accordingly, digital innovation (fintech) is …

Many Americans live paycheck to paycheck, carry revolving credit balances, and have little liquidity to absorb financial shocks. One consequence of this financial vulnerability is that many individuals use a portion of their retirement savings during their working years. For every $1 that flows into 401(k)s and similar accounts, between 30¢ and 40¢ leaks out before retirement (Argento, Bryant, and Sabelhaus 2015). We explore the practical considerations and challenges associated with helping households accumulate liquid savings that can be deployed when urgent pre-retirement needs arise. Automatically enrolling workers into an employer-sponsored “rainy- day” or “emergency” savings account—terms that we use …

Three Essays On Entry Barriers And Incentives In Labor Markets, Samuel Ingram Jan 2020

Three Essays On Entry Barriers And Incentives In Labor Markets, Samuel Ingram

Theses and Dissertations--Economics

Occupational choice at the margin depends on both the incentives for entry and barriers to entry. The primary entry barrier determined by regulation is an occupational license. These are government laws determining the minimum qualifications to enter an occupation including education, testing, fees, and background checks. These regulations are currently enforced on 25% of the US labor market. The laws are crafted to protect consumers from unsafe goods and services but also have important consequences in labor market outcomes. The consequences may include fewer workers entering the profession, changes to which workers enter the profession, and altering competition, all of …

Stress And Cancer Treatment: How A Family’S Adaptability And Cohesion Affects Financial Stress, Emily Marie Johnson Jan 2020

Stress And Cancer Treatment: How A Family’S Adaptability And Cohesion Affects Financial Stress, Emily Marie Johnson

Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences

According to the American Cancer Society (2019), it is estimated that 1,762,450 new cancer diagnoses occurred in 2019 in the United States. Currently, cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide (American Cancer Society, 2019). As cancer affects the family, roles within the family will shift (e.g., transitioning to a caregiving relationship), causing each family member to adapt. With the costs of cancer steadily increasing, this potentially leaves a devastating impact on the family. When considering family function in terms of Family Systems, John Rolland created the Family Systems Illness Model to explain how families adapt to an …

A Choice Model For Correspondent Banking Relationships, Tanisha Sheth Jan 2020

A Choice Model For Correspondent Banking Relationships, Tanisha Sheth

CMC Senior Theses

Employing a granular hand-collected dataset, this paper studies the formation of local financial networks as a consequence of one of the largest bank failures during the Great Depression. The collapse of the National Bank of Kentucky caused ripples throughout the interbank network as 233 banks were faced with the decision to form new connections to reallocate reserves. Tracing over 1600 institutional linkages between 1929 and 1934, I evaluate the decision-making process of commercial banks under a nested logit framework. I find that peer effects and other regional metrics, contrary to national connectivity measures, act as principal determinants in network formation. …

Determinants Of Tax Morale Using Structural Equation Model (Sem), Raymond S. Pacaldo, Rodiel C. Ferrer Jan 2020

Determinants Of Tax Morale Using Structural Equation Model (Sem), Raymond S. Pacaldo, Rodiel C. Ferrer

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This paper analyzes the impact of tax enforcement, trust in government, and demographic characteristics on the tax morale of firms in the Philippines. From the database of Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey (BEEPS), 864 firms were taken and analyzed using partial least squares on the structural equation of modeling (PLS-SEM). In the analysis, only trust in government, organizational form, and firm location provided a significant impact to tax morale. Thus, firms pay taxes religiously when the government acts trustworthily. On the other hand, sole proprietorship and Metro Manila firms exhibited lower tax morale as compared to corporations and outside …

Effect Of Moderating Variables: Financial Leverage And Dividend Payout Of Publicly-Listed Property Sector Of The Philippines, Cynthia P. Cudia, Harrison Kendrick L. Chun, Tristan Dranel M. Papa, Raveena S. Tahilramani, Althea R. Tan

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Various studies on the relationship between financial leverage and dividend payout have been conducted; however, different factors affecting this relationship remain unexplored. This study aimed to identify the effect of different firm-specific moderating variables on the relationship between financial leverage and dividend payout of Philippine publicly-listed companies under the property sector for the years 2012–2016. These firm-specific variables were classified into two categories—company profile and financial condition. By employing multiple regression with the interaction model, the results of this study found that business risk has a significant effect on the relationship between financial leverage and dividend payout. Similarly, firm size …

Determinants Of Firm’S Internals & Macroeconomic Factors On Financial Performance Of Ethiopian Insurers, Kishor Chandra Meher, Temesgen Zewudu

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Insurance acts as a social instrument that indemnifies the human life and properties against unforeseeable risks. It is imperative for the insurance companies to be profitable while obliging the society and nation as a risk saver of insurable risk. The research aims to investigate the association between specific internals and macroeconomic factors and the financial performance of insurance companies in Ethiopia. A quantitative approach is applied in this research by adopting inferential statistics with a balanced panel data of nine insurance companies for 15 years (2002–2016). Explanatory analysis is deployed where Pearson’s correlation and OLS regression model are applied to …

Fiscal Policy And Stock Market Movement In The Philippines, Deborah Kim S. Sy Jan 2020

Fiscal Policy And Stock Market Movement In The Philippines, Deborah Kim S. Sy

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The Philippine government has suffered greatly from fiscal imbalances for the past few decades. The largest fiscal deficit was recorded at PhP112 billion in 2017. Fiscal reforms led to a considerable decline of the national government debt from 52.4% of GDP in 2010 to 44.8% in 2015. The study aims to investigate the Philippine fiscal policy and its link to asset prices, as measured by the changes in the Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEI). Quarterly observations from 2001 to 2017 of monetary, fiscal, and economic variables were used on a vector error correction model (VECM) to observe their long-run relationship …

Corporate Social Responsibility And Corporate Financial Performance: An Examination Into Fortune 500 And Djsi Firms Within Consumer-Facing Industries, Samantha Lee Jan 2020

Corporate Social Responsibility And Corporate Financial Performance: An Examination Into Fortune 500 And Djsi Firms Within Consumer-Facing Industries, Samantha Lee

CMC Senior Theses

This paper examines the relationship between a firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and its Corporate Financial Performance (CFP) in nine consumer-facing industries classified by the Fortune 500. Unlike prior research on the matter, the firms investigated in this study consist only of firms on both the Fortune 500 for the year 2018 and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) between the years 2005-2018 in order to define a clear measurement of CSR. In order to gauge investor and market sentiment, CFP is measured primarily by the firm’s stock performance in comparison to the S&P 500 as a basis. The results …

“It’S Gonna Be Yuge”: The Impact Of Chinese Imports On United States Manufacturing Firm Valuations, Charles Mangum

CMC Senior Theses

Throughout the years there has been literature regarding the impacts of Chinese manufacturing on the United States economy. Much of the focus has been centered on macro-economic effects and not firm level impacts. Using trade exposure and data from publically traded manufacturing firms I provide an analysis of the potential effects of increased trade exposure in a highly competitive market. My research aims to measure the impacts of Chinese imports on United States manufacturing companies with low technological barriers to entry. When comparing trade exposure to firm level data I conclude that there is a negative correlation between investment levels …

The purpose of this study, guided by the theory of the firm, was to explore compensation strategies that some executives in Uganda used to support effective risk-management practices. This multiple case study was an in-depth inquiry into compensation strategies that encouraged prudent risk-taking behavior. The target population comprised 5 risk-management executives from 5 separate commercial banks who had successfully implemented compensation strategies that supported risk management practices. Data were collected through …

Modelling Cross-Market Linkages Between Global Markets And China’S A-, B- And H-Shares, Thi Tuan Anh Do Jan 2020

Modelling Cross-Market Linkages Between Global Markets And China’S A-, B- And H-Shares, Thi Tuan Anh Do

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

One of the biggest challenges in quantifying joint risk and forming effective policies in financial management and investment strategies is to fully understand the characteristics of market associations in low and high volatility periods. Market interdependence, therefore, is a hot topic that has received interest from academics and industry experts, especially since the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997. China, being the world’s second-largest economy, has been the centre of many studies investigating stock market dependencies. While China has three major share types, namely A-, B- and H-shares, with different market players, market characteristics and operating efficiency, the number of studies …

Insider Trading In Family Firms: Evidence From Thailand, Paweenon Pramukkiattiyos

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study examines the profitability of corporate insider trading in Thailand's stock market and whether the abnormal return depends on the company's characteristics and insider characteristics. The result shows that there is a significant abnormal return on corporate insider trading transactions. The difference in ownership structure is also important, with the results supporting that insider trading by family firms is more profitable than non-family firms. Moreover, the finding indicates that the trading of CEOs has more valuable information about the company's prospects than other insiders.

The Magnet Effect Of Price Limits: Evidence From High-Frequency Data On The Stock Exchange Of Thailand, Wongwarit Boonyasitphawee

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Commonly, daily prices limits are widely used for stabilizing stock markets and decrease volatility during overreaction period. However, regulators may not notice that instead of stopping panic sell or overbought, the daily price limits generate a magnet effect, which cause the price to accelerate to the price limits and increase the overall volatility. This research investigates the magnet effect of price limits using high frequency from the Stock Exchange of Thailand. Using AR(2)-GARCH(2,2) as a base model for each stock’s 5-mins returns to capture the effect. The empirical results present evidence of the strong ceiling magnet effect at all conditions, …
