Panel Data Models: An Appraisal Of Lead-Lag Relation In The Kse-30, Muhammad Ayub Siddiqui

Business Review

The lead-lag relation between index futures and the underlying index has been at the core of discussion of the researchers in the developing and the developed world. This study examines the lead-lag relationship between spot and future prices of 21 companies from the KSE-30 Index for the monthly data of the period from October 2004 to February 2008. It applies panel data estimation techniques of common constants, fixed effects and random effects. These estimations are considered to be the most recent and efficient analytical methods in handling econometric data. The data is balanced; therefore, no additional assumption has been employed. …

Consolidation In Indian Banking Industry – Need Of The Hour, Syed Ahsan Jamil, Bimal Jaiswal, Namita Nigam

Business Review

This study is aimed at trying to unravel the fast and metamorphic changes been brought about within the Indian banking industry. With the government in India clearly specifying that it will liberalize the entry of foreign banks in India by 2009 alarm bells have started ringing for underperforming banks who largely nurtured under government protection and lack of competition. It is now a fight for survival. Consolidation seems to be the only viable solution for most of theses beleaguered banks.

On Nonlinearities In Kse 100 Index Stock Return, Khurshid M. Kiani Jan 2008

On Nonlinearities In Kse 100 Index Stock Return, Khurshid M. Kiani

Business Review

This research investigates possible existence of asymmetries in business cycle fluctuations in Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) 100 index over money market rates. I model the relationship between excess stock return in KSE 100 index using a number of nonlinear time series models for constructing linearity tests for testing linearity in KSE 100 excess returns. These tests include Keenan test, Ramsay RESET test, and its improved versions i.e. RESET1 and RESET2 tests. The results based on Keenan test show statistically significant evidence of nonlinearities in KSE 100 excess returns. Likewise the results from Ramsay RESET test confirm this behavior. However, the …

The Casual Link Between Stock Returns And Trading Volume: Some Evidence From An Emerging Market, Abdul Rashid Jul 2007

The Casual Link Between Stock Returns And Trading Volume: Some Evidence From An Emerging Market, Abdul Rashid

Business Review

This paper investigates the dynamic association between daily stock index returns and percentage trading volume changes. To proceed with this, linear and nonlinear Granger causality tests are applied to the Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) data. The analysis covers the span of about 5 years with 1266 daily observations. The same methodology is employed for two non-overlapping sub-periods to examine the robustness of the results. Unidirectional linear Granger causality from stock returns to trading volume is observed for the entire sample period and for both the sub-periods as well. The null hypothesis of linear Granger noncausality from percentage volume changes to …

On Predictability In South Asian Stock Markets, Khurshid M. Kiani Jan 2007

On Predictability In South Asian Stock Markets, Khurshid M. Kiani

Business Review

In this research I investigate persistence in monthly excess stock returns over risk free rates in two South Asian stock markets i.e. S&P CNX 500 and KSE 100 stock price indexes using non-Gaussian state space or unobservable component model with stable distributions and volatility persistence. Results from non-Gaussian state space models show that both markets encompass volatility persistence. KSE 100 has a stable characteristic exponent of 1.748, but for S&P CNX 500 index the value for the characteristic exponent is 1.999 which shows normal behavior in this market. Both markets encompass persistent signal in returns at 10% level of significance. …

Business Review

This study uses the co-integration and error-correction techniques to examine the linkages between Pakistan and other capital markets of developed economies (US, UK, Japan, Australia and Canada); regional markets in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), East Asia (Indonesia, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Philippines) and EU (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy and Czech) countries. However, the longrun linkages were comparatively stronger with developed and EU markets. The direction of linkages in most cases, are from other regional …

Why Do Firms Manage Their Earnings?, Zeeshan Ahmed Jul 2006

Why Do Firms Manage Their Earnings?, Zeeshan Ahmed

Business Review

The topic of corporate earnings management has not only generated a great deal of media attention but it also has become a source of serious concern to regulators and policymakers. In the wake of the events that shook investors’ confidence in the American financial reporting system in late 2001 and early 2002, the earnings management practices of firms have come under fire by shareholders groups, institutional investors and the financial press alike. To some extent, regulators have responded by proposing and enacting new rules and regulations1. Likewise, accounting and financial researchers are increasingly probing into this topic. Prior studies identify …
