Economic Growth And The Optimal Level Of Entrepreneurship, James E. Prieger, Catherine Bampoky, Luisa R. Blanco, Aolong Liu Jan 2016

Economic Growth And The Optimal Level Of Entrepreneurship, James E. Prieger, Catherine Bampoky, Luisa R. Blanco, Aolong Liu

All Faculty Open Access Publications

Using data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), we examine data from developed and developing countries to estimate the ‘‘growth penalty” over 2003–11 when a country’s entrepreneurship deviates from its optimal level. We account for heterogeneity among countries in the optimal entrepreneurship rate, in the growth penalty from deviating from that optimum, and in other factors affecting growth. Notwithstanding that developing countries have more of their population running nascent small firms than in developed countries, a marginal increase in the entrepreneurship rate in developing countries has a positive effect on growth. On the contrary, in developed countries, there is no …

Small Business Start-Up/ Entrepreneurial Aid Plan, Dr. Michael Edmondson

2015-2016: Clinton, Iowa

This project plans to address how the City of Clinton can assist small or start-up businesses. Clinton has wonderful potential for small businesses and start-ups and the entrepreneurial minded to pursue opportunities and business ventures. This plan would provide methodology, guidelines and offer direction on how the City and Chamber of Commerce can better utilize this information.

Translating The Research: Keyword Advertising For Lean Start-Ups, Arthur P. Sullivan, Gregory W. Sullivan, John A. Sullivan

Department of Behavioral Science Publications and Research

This paper extracts and translates for application findings emerging from the research on keyword advertising. Five conclusions emerge. First, developing a comprehensive collection of keywords for a new product or service is useful for all businesses, whether or not keyword ads will ultimately be bought. Second, analyzing keyword searches identifies the existence and trend of demand from user search frequency for all businesses. Third, keyword advertising is too expensive for many products and some services, and most lean start-ups. Fourth, there are effective alternates to keyword advertising. Fifth, the skills for keyword advertising are readily learnable: an advertising firm may …

Articles

Purpose: The chapter describes and reflects upon an EU-funded research initiative, TRADEIT, which has attempted to develop a learning network among European traditional food producers as one way of contributing to the economic sustainability of the ventures, the social sustainability of the food’s regional character, and the environmental sustainability of food production through the use of traditional methods.

Design/methodology/approach: The chapter describes TRADEIT before moving on to an exploration of learning in organizations and networks. It outlines the action learning research methodology developed and implemented to explore the development of a learning network in TRADEIT. A single case history …

Turning To Case Studies As A Mechanism For Learning In Action Learning, Denise O'Leary, Paul Coughlan, Clare Rigg, David Coghlan

Articles

Case studies are a useful means of capturing and sharing experiential knowledge by allowing researchers to explore the social, organisational and political contexts of a specific case. Although accounts of action learning are often reported using a case study approach, it is not common to see individual case studies being used as a learning practice within action learning sets. Drawing on a network action learning (NAL) project, this paper explores how the process of coaching, articulating, authoring, sharing and editing case studies provided a vehicle for learning and research within a NAL set. The intended contribution of this paper to …

Rural Nebraskans continue to feel positive about their current situation. Just over one-half (52%) of rural Nebraskans believe they are better off than they were five years ago (holding steady from 53% last year, the highest proportion in all 21 years of this study, tied in 2008). And, rural Nebraskans’ outlook on their future continues to be optimistic. Almost one-half of rural Nebraskans (46%) believe they will be better off ten years from now. In addition, most rural Nebraskans disagree that people are powerless to control their own lives. This year, 55 percent strongly disagree or disagree with that statement. …

Supporting Women Entrepreneurs In Ireland, Thomas M. Cooney, David Halabisky, Sarah Kenny

Reports

Entrepreneurship development is an important requirement for achieving the goal of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth set out in the Europe 2020 strategy. It is also a means to respond to new economic challenges, to create jobs and to fight social and financial exclusion. The impact of the global financial and economic crisis calls for giving entrepreneurship and self-employment a stronger role in economic and social development policies. Inclusive entrepreneurship policies and programmes are particularly relevant for women who continue to face challenges in the labour market and are under-represented in entrepreneurship activities. However, the effectiveness of national, regional and …

Risk Management In The Venture Capital Industry: Managing Risk In Portfolio Companies, Dorian Proksch, Wiebke Stranz, Andreas Pinkwart, Michael Schefczyk

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Managing risk is one of the main activities of venture capital companies. Despite the fact that this topic is of high practical relevance, only little research was published on risk management performed by venture capital companies in their ventures. Hence, we conducted a structured literature review which was the basis for developing five hypotheses concerning measures to decrease failure risk in venture capital-backed ventures. We tested these hypotheses with an empirical data set of 93 venture capital-backed ventures in Germany using original deal data from nine different venture capital funds using a structural equation model. We showed that the experience …

Evolution Of Entrepreneurial Judgment With Venture-Specific Experience, Ugur Uygur, Sung Min Kim Jan 2016

Evolution Of Entrepreneurial Judgment With Venture-Specific Experience, Ugur Uygur, Sung Min Kim

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This study advances research on entrepreneurial cognition by investigating how entrepreneurial judgment evolves during new venture creation. We conceptualize entrepreneurial judgment as a cognitive process in the minds of entrepreneurs that operates on the causal map – i.e., a knowledge structure concerning what factors they believe will help the chances of profitability under uncertainty. At the time of initial epiphany, entrepreneurs construct a cognitive causal map which guides resource allocation decisions. Over time, venture-specific experience accumulates and entrepreneurial judgment evolves in response to their observations. Using a dataset of 524 nascent entrepreneurs, we find that entrepreneurs with more venturespecific experiences …

African American Entrepreneurial Sustainability, Edward Turner Jan 2016

African American Entrepreneurial Sustainability, Edward Turner

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

African Americans are among the fastest growing entrepreneurial minority group in the United States, but they continue to struggle with sustaining these new business ventures. Evidence suggests that African American business entrepreneurs experience an increased failure rate with a 4-year business survival rate of 39%. Reducing the failure rate would significantly add to the U.S. economy (an estimated $2.5 trillion) and create nearly 12 million more jobs. The purpose of this single case study was to explore the strategies and behaviors of an award-winning African American entrepreneur in Miami Dade County who has remained in business over 20 years. The …

Leadership Skills For Success Of Home Health Care Agencies, Andrina Yankah Jan 2016

Leadership Skills For Success Of Home Health Care Agencies, Andrina Yankah

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Small business managers often lack the leadership skills necessary to sustain their businesses beyond 5 years. The United States Small Business Administration reported that more than 65% of small business owners, including home health care agency managers, fail within the first 5 years of operation. Guided by Burns and Bass's transformational leadership theory, this multiple case study explored leadership skills that managers in home health care agencies need to sustain their new businesses beyond 5 years. The purposeful sample comprised of 3 managers from 3 different home health care agencies within a 75-mile radius of Baltimore, Maryland, that had demonstrated …

Supply Chain Organizational Infrastructure For Promoting Entrepreneurial Emphasis And Innovativeness: The Role Of Trust And Learning., Divesh Ojha, Jeff Shockley, Chandan Acharya

Publications and Research

Research has argued that inter-organizational trust and learning are critical factors associated with successful supply chain innovation and long-term competitiveness. In this paper, we develop and test a proposed model of supply chain organizational design using survey data collected from 128 decision-makers across diverse sample of supply chain decision-makers across many industries. Our analysis provides evidence that both trust and supply chain learning play important, but distinctive roles in developing an entrepreneurial and innovative supply chains. Moreover, our research findings add critical insight into existing resource-based perspectives of supply chain innovation by illuminating the roles and progression of the different …

Youtube Money: The Impact Of Brand Management On Online Video Companies, Samantha Perry Jan 2016

Youtube Money: The Impact Of Brand Management On Online Video Companies, Samantha Perry

Honors Program Theses

Many YouTube channels today operate not only as miniature media outlets, but as fully functional media companies operating independently through advertising revenue. The top creators of content on YouTube bring in millions of dollars of revenue each year. This thesis seeks to answer the question of how content creators can harness the power of brand management strategy in order to maximize revenue and grow their audiences over time. I overview current trends among content creators industry-wide, and then focus on a group of channels to analyze their brand management habits on- and off-line. I then examine data from brands’ videos …

Influential Factors In Encouraging Or Dissuading Orlando Businesses To Seek Leed Certification, Katrina M. Zdanowicz Jan 2016

Influential Factors In Encouraging Or Dissuading Orlando Businesses To Seek Leed Certification, Katrina M. Zdanowicz

Honors Program Theses

Orlando, Florida, is home to 85 building projects that have received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification and 74 projects that are in the process of seeking certification. Over 90 percent of these 159 buildings have been or are being rated by LEED commercial standards. This paper argues that while LEED has played a valuable role in encouraging environmentally sustainable design in the Orlando commercial sector and will continue to be a significant presence in sustainability discussions, local government legislation can assist the end-goals of LEED by promoting more localized initiatives. The benefits of LEED certification include …

An Examination Of Job Opportunities, Candidates, And Salaries In The Field Of Entrepreneurship, Todd A. Finkle Jan 2016

An Examination Of Job Opportunities, Candidates, And Salaries In The Field Of Entrepreneurship, Todd A. Finkle

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

This article examines whether the field of entrepreneurship is becoming increasingly institutionalized by examining market trends, AACSB jobs, and salaries. The findings indicate that the field is becoming increasingly institutionalized through market trends. During 2014/15, there were 471 advertised positions and 163 candidates in Schools of Business and Management. The number of tenure track positions (261) was significantly higher than the number of tenure track candidates (161) for a ratio of 1.62. This is the highest ratio of tenure track positions to candidates since 2005/06 (2.1). Out of the 261 tenure track positions, 174 were at AACSB institutions. The ratio of …

An Integrated Model Of Employee Adoption, Nelson Pizarro Jan 2016

An Integrated Model Of Employee Adoption, Nelson Pizarro

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Proactive firms recognize that environmental and social issues are sources of competitive advantages, but whatever the motivation, organizations face challenges when implementing sustainable practices. For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), sustainable practices have stemmed from multinational corporations (MNC), but SMEs cannot adopt sustainable practices from the knowledge and experiences of large corporations because the two entities differ critically. This study introduces an integrated model of employee adoption of sustainable practices in SMEs. It is based on five behaviors to select practical areas to which SMEs can make internal changes to achieve sustainable practices and the benefits gained from them. The …

Inquiring Into Entrepreneurial Orientation: Making Progress, One Step At A Time, Vishal K. Gupta, Dev K. Dutta Jan 2016

Inquiring Into Entrepreneurial Orientation: Making Progress, One Step At A Time, Vishal K. Gupta, Dev K. Dutta

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

As we think through the four papers that comprise this special issue, we cannot help but be elated at the progress made by "entrepreneurial orientation" (EO) scholarship over the past few decades. Indeed, it seems safe to contend that EO defies the description of entrepreneurship research as a “hodgepodge” (Shane & Venkataraman, 2000), and instead serves as a good example of how a cumulative body of knowledge should develop in organizational science.

Examining Affective And Cognitive Discourse At The Time Of Ipo: Effects On Underpricing And The Moderating Role Of Entrepreneurial Orientation, William Wales, Fariss-Terry Mousa Jan 2016

Examining Affective And Cognitive Discourse At The Time Of Ipo: Effects On Underpricing And The Moderating Role Of Entrepreneurial Orientation, William Wales, Fariss-Terry Mousa

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

This study presents evidence concerning the effects of affective and cognitive rhetoric on the underpricing of firms at the time of their initial public offering. It is suggested that firms that use less affective, and more cognitively oriented discourse in their IPO prospectus will experience better underpricing outcomes. We examine these assertions using a sample of young high-tech IPO firms where investors rely on prospectuses as accurate and informative firm communications. Results from a robust five-year time span observe initial support for the hypothesized effects. Moreover, the signaling of a higher degree of entrepreneurial orientation in the firm prospectus is …

The Effect Of Entrepreneurial Orientation On Smes Growth And Export In Israeli Peripheral Regions, Yanay Farja, Eli Gimmon, Zeevik Greenberg Jan 2016

The Effect Of Entrepreneurial Orientation On Smes Growth And Export In Israeli Peripheral Regions, Yanay Farja, Eli Gimmon, Zeevik Greenberg

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

This research explores the influence of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) on SMEs located at core and peripheral regions, by focusing on a single dimension of EO: proactiveness. We conducted a quantitative study of 626 Israeli SMEs. Business growth, as measured by the rate of change in number of employees, was found to be significantly higher in the core region. As expected, proactiveness was found to strongly affect SME growth as well as firm expansion to international markets. Our analysis shows that the difference in business growth between regions can be attributed also to a lower level of owners’ proactiveness in peripheral …

The Maturing Of Entrepreneurial Firms: Entrepreneurial Orientation, Firm Performance, And Administrative Heritage, Birton Cowden, Jintong Tang, Josh Bendickson Jan 2016

The Maturing Of Entrepreneurial Firms: Entrepreneurial Orientation, Firm Performance, And Administrative Heritage, Birton Cowden, Jintong Tang, Josh Bendickson

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

A large body of research has exhibited the positive effect of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) on firm performance. However, research that attempts to explore what happens to high EO firms when they mature is sorely needed. Every firm establishes a heritage over time that impacts future capabilities. In the current research, we build on the international business literature to examine how a firm’s administrative heritage moderates the long-term effects of the EO-performance relationship, examined through the firm’s asset specificity, founder tenure, and home culture embeddedness. From this, implications are derived for EO retention and the firm’s awareness of administrative heritage and …

Does Management’S Attention To Different Facets Of Entrepreneurial Orientation Create Value For The Firm? A Longitudinal Study Of Large Retailers, Alka Gupta, Xiujian Chen, Vishal K. Gupta Jan 2016

Does Management’S Attention To Different Facets Of Entrepreneurial Orientation Create Value For The Firm? A Longitudinal Study Of Large Retailers, Alka Gupta, Xiujian Chen, Vishal K. Gupta

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Studies of entrepreneurial orientation tend to merge its three components—proactiveness, risk-taking, and innovativeness—into a monolithic construct and analyze its relationship with firm outcomes at one point in time. This has resulted in knowledge voids related to the relative importance of the different components, their specific effect on value created by the firm, and their evolution over time. The present study links each component of entrepreneurial orientation to economic value creation using a longitudinal dataset. Results provide support for hypothesized relationships. Implications and avenues for future research are discussed.

Food Policy: Urban Farming As A Supplemental Food Source, Bessie Didomenica, Mark Gordon Jan 2016

Food Policy: Urban Farming As A Supplemental Food Source, Bessie Didomenica, Mark Gordon

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Food policy has a unique role for public, nonprofit, private, and academic stakeholders. Growing food in the city is a challenge worldwide. Food systems can be destroyed by external (weather extremes) and internal (zoning regulations) forces. This study explores urban farms as a secondary food source and their common themes across four sectors. A Northeastern U.S. city was the case study to examine how it implemented its formal urban agriculture program. The positive social change implications of urban farms include greater food visibility and food access in low-income areas and more consumer awareness about growing fresh food. This study contributes …
