Encouraging Technology-Based Ventures: Entrepreneurship Education And Engineering Graduates, Teresa Menzies, Joseph C. Paradi

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

This article examines entrepreneurship courses offered by engineering faculties in Canada. The venturing rate of engineering students, whether the venturing rate increases if students have taken a course in entrepreneurship, and the type of ventures created are also explored. A recent census and an empirical study of two groups of engineering graduates from a Canadian university were utilized. Findings have implications for educators and administrators and for policy-makers interested in encouraging economic growth.

Women Entrepreneurs: Factors That Contribute To Women Launching Their Own Business And Factors That Satisfy Women Entrepreneurs, Jean M. Mcatavey

Factors that contribute to women launching their own business and satisfaction levels of women entrepreneurs are examined. Survey responses from 94 respondents are obtained from women entrepreneurs in Florida. An ANOVA was used to compare sample means between the demographics and the independent variables. Aligning with values, regaining excitement, being in charge, advancing myself, fulfilling life-long goal and balancing family and friends contribute to reasons why women launch their own business. Regression analyses were also conducted where being in charge, fulfilling a life-long goal, and balancing family and work contribute 41% of the variance of the dependent variable regaining excitement. …

Home-based businesses are the single biggest business cohort in Australia, accounting for 67% of all small businesses and 58% of all businesses [1]. The majority of SMEs have neither the internal expertise nor financial resources to enable in-house development of electronic commerce and therefore turn to the services of website design consultants to assist them. Unfortunately, they often engage consultants without any clear idea of their intended e-business strategy and without due care as to effective engagement processes. This study examines the relationship between Locus of Control and the intention of being an entrepreneur among Federal Development Authority Malaysia (FDAM ) managers. This study first investigate the effect of Locus of Control on the intention to become an entrepreneur among 100 respondents, as measured by statistical testing on answered survey questionnaire. Further, this study extends the analysis by examining the relationship between ethnic group and the intention of being an entrepreneur among FDAM managers. Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit den wenig erforschten, komplexen Wechselwirkungen zwischen der rapide voranschreitenden globalen Marktvergesellschaftung einerseits sowie den Marktkulturen in Südostasien, in denen ethnischchinesische Unternehmer, Geschäftsleute und Händler mit ihren Familienkonglomeraten und Handelsnetzwerken eine prominente Rolle spielen. Ausgehend von der Asienkrise 1997-99, die eine deutliche Zäsur für ethnisch-chinesisches Wirtschaftshandeln in der Region darstellt, werden die Auswirkungen der rapiden Wandlungsprozesse auf das ethnisch-chinesische Unternehmertum in der Region und deren sozio-ökonomische Beziehungsnetzwerke skizziert sowie unternehmerische Anpassungsstrategien aufgezeigt. From its earliest days as a British outpost, Singapore has relied heavily for its economic survival on its position as an entrepot trading centre. In the first decades after independence in 1965, economic strategy was focused on building infrastructure, attracting foreign direct investment, and export-led growth. The political commitment to openness in both trade and capital — and, more recently, labour — is one of the key features of a strategy that has delivered remarkable returns in terms of the economic well-being of the people of Singapore.
