The purpose of this article is the analysis of the system dynamics model validation illustrated by the example of a model of the manufacturing resource allocation. In the first part of the article the authors present an overview of the definitions of validation and verification that can be found in the reference literature. Also, they emphasize the role which validation and verification play in the modeling process. Furthermore, they discuss the techniques of system dynamics model validation with particular focus on tests of the model structure, behavior and policy implications. The second part of the article contains an example of …

Entrepreneurial Orientation In Mexican Microenterprises, Héctor Montiel Campos, Luis S. Alvarado Acuña, José Pablo Nuño De La Parra, Francisco A. Aguilar Valenzuela
Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation JEMI
Over the past 30 years research on Entrepreneurship Orientation (EO) has provided valuable information regarding strategy, entrepreneurship and aspects of performance at the firm-level. In the entrepreneurial universe, microenterprises play a very special role in the business context of the economy. However, they have not been relatively present in the EO research. This paper studies the EO-performance relationship in a group of microenterprises in Mexico and includes the Dominant Logic (DL) as a variable that moderates this relationship. The results indicate that risk taking, proactiveness and competitive aggressiveness variables from the EO influence the microenterprise performance. In addition, the external …

Financial liquidity is one of the most important areas of running business operations. Each entity must keep it at an adequate level. Lack of financial liquidity is the main factor leading to bankruptcy of companies. The analysis of liquidity and debt verifies the ability of an entity to pay current liabilities and also confirms the company’s ability to survive on the market. Based on the results of the analysis of liquidity and debt the management should therefore prepare liquidity management strategy. The article is based on the available financial statements of KSP Polonia Warszawa Sportowa Spółka Akcyjna and presents an …

Evidence Of Opportunity And Necessity Driven Entrepreneurship In Nigeria, Abubakar S. Garba, Fariastuti Djafar, Shazali Abu Mansor
Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation JEMI
The objective of this paper is to examine the influence of poverty, unemployment and GDP on entrepreneurship. Time series data for 31 years was collected from various official sources for the analysis. Vector autoregressive (VAR) framework was adopted to systematically capture the rich dynamic of multiple time series. Other tests conducted were unit root test, Johansen and Juselius (1990) co-integration test, Granger causality and dynamic model analysis beyond the sample. It was found that poverty and GDP influence entrepreneurship negatively, while unemployment influences entrepreneurship positively. The paper reveals the presence of both opportunity and necessity driven entrepreneurs in the country. …

Total Participation Management:Toward Psychological Determinants Of Subjective Well-Being At Work, Katarzyna Mika, Ryszard Stocki, Agnieszka Bożek
Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation JEMI
Aiming to determine which management practice has the strongest influence on the subjective well-being (SWB) of employees, three workplaces were assessed with reference to different levels of total participation management (TPM), an innovative approach to human resource management. The study examined whether the level of TPM is positively related with SWB, defined according to Diener’s (1984) affective and cognitive facets of work. The psychological explanation of the predicted dependence was the level of satisfaction of three basic needs (autonomy, competence and relatedness) distinguished by Deci and Ryan (2000a). The hypothesis about a positive relationship between SWB and TPM was confirmed. …

Innovations Under The Concept Of ‘Turning Garbage Into Gold’ In Fisheries Waste Management, Muhammad Yusof
Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation JEMI
This paper discusses the encouragement of creativity and innovation in creating opportunities for entrepreneurship turning useless materials into valuable resources. It is necessary to know the thought process and planning in the entrepreneurship idea to create a new business at this time. One of the brilliant philosophies about entrepreneurs is that they are those who can “turn garbage into gold”. This concept describes the important character of entrepreneurs who foresee business opportunities and have the intelligence to transform trash into cash. This means that they have the necessary ability to create innovation and value-added products for sale. The analyzed case …
Determinants, Moderators And Consequences Of Organizational Interaction Orientation, Christian Hoops, Michael Bücker
Determinants, Moderators And Consequences Of Organizational Interaction Orientation, Christian Hoops, Michael Bücker
Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation JEMI
Interaction orientation reflects the ability of a company to interact with the individual customer and to gather information from successful interactions. Four dimensions of interaction orientation are identified in the literature: customer concept, interaction response capacity, customer empowerment and customer value management (Ramani and Kumar, 2008). This study shows that indeed a fifth dimension of interaction orientation exists and investigates the determinants, moderators and consequences of this construct. The first notable finding is that B2B companies exhibit a greater degree of interaction orientation than B2C firms. Ramani and Kumar hypothesized that in their study. We show that there are B2C …

The importance and influence of Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) on the behavior of enterprises, their results and effectiveness, is one of fundamental areas of interest of scientists, as well as single- and multi-dimensionality of this concept. Other constructs, such as entrepreneurial intentions, activities and opportunities seem to be derivatives of entrepreneurial orientation, without which none of these elements could appear in this area of studies. Issue 3 of JEMI, which we are proud to offer to our readers, is a collection of interesting articles, both from scientific and practical point of view, on entrepreneurial orientation, entrepreneurial intentions and opportunities offered by …

Smart Regions. Two Cases Of Crowdsourcing For Regional Development, Steffen Roth, Jari Kaivo-Oja, Thomas Hirschmann
Smart Regions. Two Cases Of Crowdsourcing For Regional Development, Steffen Roth, Jari Kaivo-Oja, Thomas Hirschmann
Dr. Steffen Roth
Despite a certified need for stronger ties between regional entrepreneurial ecosystems and larger networks, and despite an emerging discourse on beneficial interlinks between crowdsourcing and urban development, the relationship between crowdsourcing and regional development is underexplored. Unlike the few existing reports on voluntary bottom-up crowdsourcing initiatives for regional development, the focus of the present article is on two cases of top-down initiatives of crowdsourcing for regional development launched by institutional actors in the Swiss Canton of Valais and the Italian autonomous province, South Tyrol. The results of a comparison of the two cases suggest consideration of the strength of regional …

This paper examines socio-psychological determinants of entrepreneurial motivation. It identifies four higher-order socio-psychological factors— locus of control, social cynicism, the traditionalism-modernity continuum and the survival-self-actualization continuum—and conducts a multi-level analysis of their effects on the probability of being an opportunity entrepreneur in a given society while controlling for the levels of necessity entrepreneurship and other important factors. Our model also includes varying levels of growth expectations by the focal entrepreneur. The results of our study provide interesting new insights and suggest that socio-psychological factors are significant predictors of entrepreneurial motivation. Moreover, the effects of socio-psychological factors on opportunity entrepreneurship vary …

Contextualizing The Categorical Imperative: Category Linkages, Technology Focus, And Resource Acquisition In Nanotechnology Entrepreneurship, Michael Lounsbury, Tyler Wry
michael lounsbury
This paper examines the role of category affiliations in entrepreneurial resource acquisition. Pace existing studies, we suggest category spanning will cause firms to be overlooked or discounted because evaluators assume that they have less expertise than their category-focused competitors; a phenomenon known as the ‘categorical imperative’. We suggest, however, that categories can be related both vertically and horizontally, and that this has important implications for understanding how the actors that span between them are evaluated. Studying startup ventures in nanotube technology,we showthat venture capital investments were affected by a firm's position across patent classes that were related at both of …
Entrepreneurship Education In The Research-Intensive Entrepreneurial University, Edward Feser
Entrepreneurship Education In The Research-Intensive Entrepreneurial University, Edward Feser
Edward J Feser
Knowledge commercialisation and commodification are important components of universities’ “Third Mission” to contribute to the development of their home regions by strengthening their engagement with the public, private, and third sectors. Entrepreneurship education programmes have tended to develop in parallel to such “entrepreneurial university” initiatives, rather than in intentional alignment with them. This is reflected in the research literature as well, where the analysis of the “entrepreneurial university” and studies of entrepreneurship education have little overlap. This paper examines the evolution of the entrepreneurship education initiative of a single research-intensive institution—the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom—and the ways …

Isserman's Impact: Quasi-Experimental Comparison Group Designs In Regional Research, Edward Feser
Edward J Feser
Applications using quasi-experimental comparison group designs in regional science and geography have increased substantially over the last three decades, inspired by the work of Andrew Isserman and colleagues in the 1980s and 1990s, robust literatures on quasi-experimental design in fields like education and psychology, a vast program evaluation literature, observational studies methodology in statistics, and the growing interest in experimental and non-experimental (natural) designs in empirical economics. This paper discusses the state of quasi-experimental comparison group research today, with a primary focus on studies in which regions—Census tracts, counties, cities, metropolitan areas, provinces, or states—are the units of analysis. There …

Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurs In The International Carpet Trade: An Empirical Study, Ivan H. Light, Shahamak Rezaei, Leo Paul Dana
Leo- Paul Dana
Persian carpets have long been an important commodity in the world market, largely controlled by the Tehran Carpet Bazaar and the Hamburg Free Harbour. Interviews were conducted amongst Persian carpet traders in European centres, providing a historical overview and allowing us to identify trends. The paper discusses the pre-modern bazaar and the authors observe changes in the sector as Persian carpets can now be sourced from new entrants competing with traditional manufacturers. We identify two important issues: 1) the existence of a time-lag from the date of arrival of new migrant groups before the group is able to establish some …
Market Orientation And Entrepreneurship In Chinese Family Business: A Socialisation View, Henry X. Shi, Leo Paul Dana
Market Orientation And Entrepreneurship In Chinese Family Business: A Socialisation View, Henry X. Shi, Leo Paul Dana
Leo- Paul Dana
This article examines the relationship between market orientation and entrepreneurship in small to medium-sized second-generation Chinese family businesses. Market orientation is captured through a multi-dimensional framework, which defines a spectrum between a market orientation pole and a family orientation pole. The Schumpeterian tradition is adopted in entrepreneurship investigation, which emphasises the innovation outcomes. Findings are discussed by using a socialisation view. Analysis indicates that the owner-manager’s socialisation patterns have a significant impact on the firm’s entrepreneurial processes, which nuances the relationship between market orientation

This paper is about women entrepreneurs in Macedonia, conditions for female entrepreneurship, perspectives for development and an array of problems that women entrepreneurs are facing. In order to gain a better picture of current motives, problems and perspectives of Macedonian women in entrepreneurship, a survey was conducted during the period of December 2011 – March 2012, to complement secondary sources. Respondents were asked about motives for starting a business, the size of the business they run, revenues, their family status, management problems, and necessary capabilities as perceived by them. We used Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) reports to compare the indicators …

Entrepreneurship Education In Japanese Universities – How Do We Train For Risk Taking In A Culture Of Risk Adverseness?, Teruo Shinato, Katsuyuki Kamei, Leo Paul Dana
Leo- Paul Dana
In this paper, we focus on entrepreneurship education at universities in Japan. In this country, entrepreneurship in terms of willingness to take the risk of setting up a business is at the lowest level in international comparison surveys such as the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. This tendency to have a lack of entrepreneurship among Japanese people is based on the traditional cultural climate which is not necessarily favourable for entrepreneurs. The era of economic expansion needs another period of vitality after overcoming the crisis and stagnation since the beginning of the 1990s after the collapse of a so-called bubble economy. Under …

An Empirical Study Of The Underground Economy In The Kingdom Of Belgium, Shahamak Rezaei, Marco Goli, Leo Paul Dana
Leo- Paul Dana
This article investigates the underground economy in Belgium. Although several government initiatives are attempting to combat underground economic activities, we found illegal foreign workers identifying opportunities and fulfilling market needs. Underground employment thus thrives in a variety of sectors, including the building sector, cleaning houses, delivery jobs, garage business horticulture, hotels, industrial cleaning, and social work.
Evolution De La Coopétition Dans Un Cluster: Le Cas De Waipara Dans Le Secteur Du Vin, Leo Paul Dana, Julien Granata
Evolution De La Coopétition Dans Un Cluster: Le Cas De Waipara Dans Le Secteur Du Vin, Leo Paul Dana, Julien Granata
Leo- Paul Dana
The Waipara case study contributes to understanding developments in wine production clusters over time, in particular the coopetition relationship between cluster members. This longitudinal analysis is based on two primary data collection stages using semi-structured interviews. Formalizing cluster actions and strengthening collaboration among its members seem to contribute to developing a collaborative spirit. This strengthened collaboration hinders competition whereas the latter would seem to be indispensable for the coopetitive strategy’s success.

The Evolution Of Co-Opetition In The Waipara Wine Cluster Of New Zealand, Leo Paul Dana, Julien Granata, Frank Lasch, Alan Carnaby
Leo- Paul Dana
The co-opetion literature has long focused on the explanatory variables for competitors engaging in cooperative relationships. Yet,there is a gap in understanding the evolution of coopetition. In this article, we re-visit an embryonic cluster in New Zealand and investigate changes over time. The paper examines a regional wine cluster against a background of industry restructuring, competition and internationalization. The study thus contributes to our understanding of the evolution of a regional wine cluster and its implications for wine business. The originality of the paper is twofold: first, the paper uses the co-opetition approach to provide a better understanding of cooperation and …
