This project (with both theoretical and applied portions) serves to enrich understanding about the vicissitudes of organizational consulting while simultaneously serving as preparation for working in this field. With such a wide spectrum of approaches and disciplines among professional consulting occupations, an important objective of this project is to explore underlying theoretical principles that generally influence the field of organizational consulting. In this project, theoretical insights from many pertinent organizational communication and persuasion concepts, especially Edgar Schein’s (1969, 1988, 2009) behavioral models of organizational consultation (purchase-of-expertise, doctor-patient, and process), are offered to accompany the professional correspondences with which they correspond. …

This senior project creates research design parameters that will facilitate two- way communications between the California Air National Guard and its airmen. The benefits of conducting its research are twofold. First, the California Air National Guard can learn more about its airmen. Second, the California Air National Guard can use information about its airmen to better serve its external publics in future public relations and marketing endeavors.

We argue that the language spoken by corporate decision makers influences their firms’ social responsibility and sustainability practices. Linguists suggest that obligatory future-time-reference (FTR) in a language reduces the psychological importance of the future. Prior research has shown that speakers of strong FTR languages (such as English, French, and Spanish) exhibit less future-oriented behavior (Chen, 2013). Yet, research has not established how this mechanism may affect the future-oriented activities of corporations. We theorize that companies with strong-FTR languages as their official/working language would have less of a future orientation and so perform worse in future-oriented activities such as corporate social …

There is a growing body of literature which recognises the strategic importance of middle managers (Westney, 1990, Kanter, 1982, Balogun, 2003, Balogun et al., 2011, Tippmann et al., 2013). Through enactment of strategic activities, middle managers influence how strategy develops in organisations (Aherne et al., 2014). Floyd and Wooldridge (1992) developed a model of upward and downward strategic activity which has been the basis for much of the research on middle managers. However, recent developments have highlighted the limitations in only researching upward and downward strategic activities (Rouleau and Balogun, 2011). Reading For Work: Reviving A Neglected Communication Skill, Clive Muir

College instructors often complain that students do not read textbooks and instead prefer to use their own cryptic PowerPoint notes from class for completing assignments and tests. Yet, reading does not seem to get the time and attention that writing and speaking do and reading may be taken for granted. In other words, students write reports and memos, create visual aids, and deliver presentations that are graded; whereas instructors give most reading tasks as homework that are not directly assessed, although they do affect students' success in the course. Changes To The Student Loan Experience: Psychological Predictors And Outcomes, Thomas Mueller

Journal of Student Financial Aid

This study builds on the work of scholars who have explored psychological perceptions of the student loan experience. Survey analysis (N = 175) revealed a multidimensional model was developed through factor analysis and testing, which revealed four latent variables: Duress, Mandatory, Financial, and Success. Duress and Mandatory were found to be independent unique predictors of the student loan process. Though perceptions were not differentiated among groups, a predominant segment of respondents did not recall their loan interest rates or terms of repayment. Respondents acknowledged the availability of loans but did not correlate availability to the value of university degrees and …

In today’s media environment, crises are magnified as media events and are rich sites for theinception ofimages. Particular images, like a photograph or a sound bite are found to endureas representations of defining moments of crises. This study seeks to examine the concept ofan enduring image, how it is engendered and how it impacts crisis communication efforts.The study utilizes five case studies of crisis with an inherent enduring image. An enduringimage constitutes a prime representation of the accused in a given crisis.
