Our second edition of MSR is dedicated to two populations – millennials and women. Currently, millennials comprise approximately 35%[1] of the United States’ workforce. Women hold 51.7% of the jobs in the U.S. job market.[2] This MSR issue focuses on the status of these groups in the business world. The reason for this emphasis is that most MSR writers and readers are millennials (which is defined as people between the ages of 18-24) and all of us work with or for women (as well as some of us are women).

The 46 fellows in the 2017 cohort of the UMass Boston Emerging Leaders Program worked with seven community partners on projects of strategic importance to these nonprofit and government organizations. However, not all business leaders have been successful in sustaining Lean implementation with the majority failing within the first three years. Extensive research has shown that diverse workplaces are more effective than homogenous workplaces; however, gay and lesbian employees still often face discrimination or exclusion in the workplace. In order to initiate discussion about inclusion and diversity in the workplace, the authors interviewed five gay employees (four women and one man). This article contains a brief introduction and conclusion, as well as excerpts from the interviews. The interviewees confirmed that they had experienced discrimination in the workplace themselves or had seen it happen with others.
