What Are The Experiences Of Successful Minority Entrepreneurs In Building Effective Trust-Based Relationships, Robert T. Watt
What Are The Experiences Of Successful Minority Entrepreneurs In Building Effective Trust-Based Relationships, Robert T. Watt
Student Scholarship
Not a lot of attention has been paid to the networking behavior of minority entrepreneurs. Research on the minority entrepreneur population has typically taken a deficiency and academic approach in focusing on the high failure rate of minority owned businesses in the United States. This has created a gap in the literature on successful behavior of minority business owners. Networking theory suggests that entrepreneurs can use relationships as an asset to increase the success of their business opportunities. Successful minority and non-minority entrepreneurs have engaged in qualitative interviews to share their views and techniques in expanding their business opportunities and …
Work-Life Fusion: A Paradigm Shift In Understanding Work And Life Management: Scale Development, Validation, And Multigenerational Analysis, Donna L. Haeger
Work-Life Fusion: A Paradigm Shift In Understanding Work And Life Management: Scale Development, Validation, And Multigenerational Analysis, Donna L. Haeger
Student Scholarship
A Work-Life Fusion scale is introduced and developed to measure the extent to which people leverage technological tools both virtually and in face-to-face exchanges to concurrently manage work and life issues while at work. Subscales emerge from the data with strong reliability measures and rigorous techniques are employed to achieve validation. The scale is used as a resource to explore its impact on Work-Life Satisfaction, Job Satisfaction, and Psychological Job Control. Multi-group analysis across generations surfaces clear indication of a shift to a fused approach toward work and life management as cohorts become younger.
Developing Leadership Talent In Family Businesses: Embracing Risk Or Playing It Safe, Stephen P. Miller
Developing Leadership Talent In Family Businesses: Embracing Risk Or Playing It Safe, Stephen P. Miller
Student Scholarship
On-the-job experiences are emphasized as powerful developers of leadership talent in leadership and family business literature. Our qualitative study of 37 family business leaders from mid-market privately held family firms found that it is not just having experiences but the nature of those experiences that determines whether or not authentic leadership talent is actually developed, particularly in next-generation family enterprise leaders. The "family effect," the extent to which actors in a family firm embrace risk in the development of nextgeneration leaders, is identified as central to the development of leadership competencies. We propose a conceptual framework with four factors that …
Overcoming Barriers In Affordable Housing Cross-Sector Collaborations, Jennifer R. Madden
Overcoming Barriers In Affordable Housing Cross-Sector Collaborations, Jennifer R. Madden
Student Scholarship
Cross-sector collaboration is a viable strategy for addressing complex social problems like the lack of affordable housing. However, the literature tells us collaboration is difficult, complicated and discouraged by some scholars. Qualitative research involving 31 leaders participating in affordable housing cross-sector collaborations revealed despite size, sector or success, most collaborations for affordable housing encounter a common set of obstacles: funding, partner, community and/or government barriers. Key findings also suggest leaders of successful collaborations exhibited heightened emotional and social competencies, took actions for creating a better future, remained mission focused, and collaborations continuously redesigned to meet ongoing challenges.
Significant Life Transitions And Changing Lives: An Investigation Into The Internationally Mobile Professional, Victoria Woo
Significant Life Transitions And Changing Lives: An Investigation Into The Internationally Mobile Professional, Victoria Woo
Student Scholarship
Today, there are more and more professionals who are or will be transitioning into new geographies, industries, companies, roles and, most importantly, new lives. Some current studies indicate that increasing the number of transitions has a negative correlation with a person's sense of well-being. But some professionals experience an increase in well-being. Although there is an abundance of literature about coping strategies and adaptation for those in the first, negatively affected group, there is little written about individuals who thrive while transitioning. This paper reports on a qualitative study of the second, positively affected group, driven by motivations beyond seeking …
Straight From The Horses Mouth: An Experiential Learning Approach To Management Development Through Metaphor, Karen L. Stock
Straight From The Horses Mouth: An Experiential Learning Approach To Management Development Through Metaphor, Karen L. Stock
Student Scholarship
The importance of having capable leaders is extremely relevant today, but the effectiveness of training is difficult to measure. While much has been written on the use of horses for therapeutic purposes, this qualitative research study sought to address the gap of knowledge on the value of using horses as a training tool for management development. The research illustrates the derived benefits from experiential learning through metaphor in the context of working with horses that directly relates to individual's behavior at work. Through this facilitated experience, participants engaged in a process of self-discovery that led to deeper learning. The results …
Adversary To Ally: A Relational Approach To Shifting Buyer Paradigms, Donald P. Addison Ii
Adversary To Ally: A Relational Approach To Shifting Buyer Paradigms, Donald P. Addison Ii
Student Scholarship
Scholarly literature supports the notion that businesses benefit from long term collaborative relationships with trading partners, yet arm's length, adversarial relationships between buyers and sellers persist. Although scholarly research provides insights regarding conceptual and operational aspects of buyer-seller collaborations, very little has been published concerning the preparation or activities that lead into collaborative relationships. To address this gap this study conducted research involving semi structured interviews with buyers and sellers to understand how collaboration evolves in buyer seller relationships. Of specific interest is how buyer seller relationships, characterized by fear of opportunism and guarded behavior, transition to collaboration characterized by …

Unemployment is rapidly becoming an American epidemic of social, political and economic crisis, even more so for “at risk” groups such as older workers. This study focuses on issues and factors surrounding chronic under-employment, unemployment and even un- employability of our older workforce in America. As the American “social contract” i.e. Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security are under enormous strain; much will be at stake as America deals with how social, societal, political, educational, legal and economic institutions handle this very complicated and multi-facetted issue... answering the question... “Will Americans over 50 be our next lost generation?” This study analyzed …

Factors Influencing Radical And Incremental Innovation And Firm Performance In Consumer Electronics And Information Technology Industries, Shengfa Johnson Chuang
Student Scholarship
Over the past two decades, scholars have contributed multiple theories and insights to explain successful product innovation. Yet scholars have been unable to determine the relative contribution of a host of factors to successful incremental or radical product innovation. The purpose of this paper is to address two questions: 1) What innovation factors have a significant impact on incremental innovation (II) and radical innovation (RI) in the consumer electronics and information technology (CE/IT) industries? 2) What mediating roles do RI and II play in how innovation factors influence product performance? To address these questions, we build a research model that …

Essays On Time-Varying Risk And Investor Sentiment: Evidence From The U.S. And G-7 Countries Using Multivariate Garch Modeling, David William Johnk
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This dissertation investigates the effects of investor sentiment on asset prices in both the U.S. equity market (chapter III) and international market (chapter IV). It employs a conditional version of the CAPM using a parsimonious generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model in which the risk premia, betas, and correlations are time-varying. Investor sentiment is presented from two direct measures (surveys) and one indirect measure as conditional information variables; whereas, previous studies used macroeconomic fundamentals. Furthermore, investor sentiment is not assumed to be fully irrational. It is decomposed into its rational and irrational components. Both rational and irrational components are tested …

Essays On Hedge Fund Performance, Sang Heon Shin
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This dissertation consists of two essays on hedge fund performance. The first essay models exposure of hedge fund to risk factors and examines time-varying performance of hedge funds. From existing models such as ABS-factor model, SAC-factor model, and four-factor model, we extract the best six factors for each hedge fund portfolio by investment strategy. Then, we find combinations of risk factors that most explain variance in performance of each hedge fund portfolio by investment strategy. The results show instability of coefficients in the performance attribution regression. Incorporating time-varying factor exposure feature would be the best way to appropriately measure hedge …
Organizational Socialization Practices For Successful Newcomer Adjustment, Stacey L. Holleran
Organizational Socialization Practices For Successful Newcomer Adjustment, Stacey L. Holleran
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
This research study examines the practices organizational leaders can employ to assist newcomers in their adjustment to the organization, thereby creating an increase in the number of successful, long-term employees. In the workplace setting, organizational newcomers who fail to properly adapt are at risk for early “turnover” or an extended period of disengagement, producing an extremely costly scenario for the organization. Literature in the area of organizational socialization and successful newcomer adjustment suggests myriad ways to positively influence the newcomer’s experience; however, no single source offers a comprehensive approach that can be universally applied. Grounded by interpersonal communication theory and …

The Impact Of Mergers On Those Left Behind - Maintaining Employee Engagement After Merger-Based Restructuring In A Financial Services Firm, Victoria L. Basinger
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
This study explored the impact of organizational restructuring on associate engagement in a financial services firm due to a merger. It determined how much weight interpersonal relationships carry on associate opinions of the new organization, and what the new organization can do to reduce uncertainty and re-engage their newly acquired associates. The literature review looked at Uncertainty Reduction Theory, Belongingness and principles from Social Information Processing Theory to identify solutions for a decrease in engagement. A survey distributed to all associates at a financial services firm that recently underwent a merger yielded data for this study, as did five individual …
The True Value Of Value-Added Services In Digital Print, Noemi Garcia
The True Value Of Value-Added Services In Digital Print, Noemi Garcia
Graphic Communication
This study compares the success of five digital printers in California’s central coast based on whether they choose to charge for value-added services. It questions past research that shows digital printers who implement an additional fee for such services are more successful than digital printers who do not always bill the customer for the extra services. It focuses on determining the reasons behind each printer’s strategy through a questionnaire. The study concludes printers not charging are not necessarily losing money because they have found ways to eliminate non-value-adding steps in their value chain. Therefore success must be redefined other than …

Measuring Learning Through Cross Sectional Testing, Steve Lovett, Jennie Johnson
Measuring Learning Through Cross Sectional Testing, Steve Lovett, Jennie Johnson
Management Faculty Publications
The measurement of student learning is becoming increasingly important in U.S. higher education. One way to measure learning is through longitudinal testing, but this becomes especially difficult when applied to cumulative learning within programs in situations of low persistence. In particular, many Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) find themselves in such situations. Cross sectional testing is a pragmatic alternative, so long as maturity and selection effects can be estimated. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the utility and mechanics of measuring learning through cross sectional testing.
Analyzing Revenue Sharing And Buyback Contracts: An Experimental Study, Chinthana Ramaswamy
Analyzing Revenue Sharing And Buyback Contracts: An Experimental Study, Chinthana Ramaswamy
Graduate Masters Theses
This paper considers a standard newsvendor problem in a two-echelon supply chain setup. We use an experimental approach to investigate the deviation of decision makers from choosing optimal values in the context of supply chain contracts. Literature suggests that the coordinating contracts, such as revenue sharing or buyback contracts, do not necessarily improve the performance. Approaches to improve the existing revenue sharing and buyback contracts are examined in this paper. A rational supplier, who is likely to commit decision errors, sets the contract parameters to a retailer. These approaches are observed in a laboratory setting where human subjects are used …

Conditional Lot Splitting To Avoid Setups While Reducing Flow Time, Jacob V. Simons, Mark E. Kraus, Willis Mwangola, Gerard Burke
Logistics & Supply Chain Management: Faculty Publications
Previous research has clearly and consistently shown that flow time advantages accrue from splitting production lots into smaller transfer batches or sub-lots. Less extensively discussed, and certainly undesired, is the fact that lot splitting may dramatically increase the number of setups required, making it impractical in some settings. This paper describes and demonstrates a primary cause of these “extra” setups. It then proposes and evaluates decision rules which selectively invoke lot splitting in an attempt to avoid extra setups. For the closed job shop environment tested, our results indicate that conditional logic can achieve a substantial portion of lot splitting’s …

Nonprofit Funding Agencies’ Review Of Grant Recipients, Siobain Mcilvain
Nonprofit Funding Agencies’ Review Of Grant Recipients, Siobain Mcilvain
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
Nonprofits need to be just as responsible as public corporations. Nonprofit funding agencies have the responsibility for evaluating the organizations they fund to make sure that they are operating with high integrity, maintaining strong internal controls, remaining financially stable, and overall being good stewards of the funds received. This paper will explain the criteria that a funding agency should follow in order to affect this process, as well as how a recipient nonprofit will benefit from following the criteria.
