Where Potential Leads, Stephen S. Brand May 2004

Where Potential Leads, Stephen S. Brand

Student Scholarship

This study explores the influence of the personal characteristics of engineers and the nature of their work environment on innovation, characterized as generating revenue from innovative outputs. Using the paradigm of multiple intelligences developed by Gardner and its related literature, in concert with academic achievement in high school and the presence of a mentor, we empirically tested these relationships with over 250 engineers from one Fortune 500 corporation. The results show that although theory suggested direct positive influences of musical, spatial, logical and physical intelligences on revenue, only two of these intelligences had any direct effect and the effect was …

Training And Coping Strategies: Reducing Expectation Gaps To Improve Perception Of Job Performance, Job Satisfaction And Decrease Intent To Turnover In Nursing Work, Lori A. Holtzworth-Brohm

Student Scholarship

A sample of 89 hospital-based registered nurses with at least one year of experience were surveyed to ascertain their expectations and actual experiences in nursing work and determine if gaps between expectations and experiences exist. The nurses were also asked to specify the frequency of formal and informal training they participated in and what coping strategies they used to deal with these gaps. Lastly, the nurses were asked to assess their perception of job performance compared to peers, their level of job satisfaction, and their intention to turnover. The data collected was cleaned and coded for quality then analyzed using …

Social Capital, Organizational Legitimacy, And Transformational Leadership: Implications For Nonprofit Fundraising And Board Relations, Nancy Koury King Apr 2004

Social Capital, Organizational Legitimacy, And Transformational Leadership: Implications For Nonprofit Fundraising And Board Relations, Nancy Koury King

Student Scholarship

Do a leader’s social capital building activities influence outcomes in their organization? A web- based survey of leaders of nonprofit aging services organizations was conducted to determine the relationship between social capital investing activities, transformational leadership style, organizational legitimacy and organizational performance indicators. The study looked specifically at leaders’ internal and external social capital building activities and their impact on two different organizational outcomes--donations and the leader’s relationship with the board. In addition, the roles of organizational legitimacy and transformational leadership in moderating these relationships were studied. The research found that external social capital investing activities predicted an effective relationship …

Baseball And Its Anti-Trust Exemption, Jason Korczak '04 Apr 2004

Baseball And Its Anti-Trust Exemption, Jason Korczak '04

Honors Projects

Somewhere in small town America there is a group of young boys with an old tattered ball and a game tested Louisville Slugger playing a pick up game of baseball. It doesn't matter that there is no crowd cheering them on, or that none of the players have a uniform, or even that not one of them is being paid. All of these youngsters are playing simply for the love of the game. And this is how the majority of people in America view baseball, as a game that people play for fun and enjoyment. This is not the case …

A New Hub In The Aviation Industry: Towards An Integration Of B2b E-Marketplaces In The Airline Industry, Claudia-Maria Wagner, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth

Conference papers

In academic literature, limited academic research has been undertaken in exploring the value creation of B2B e-Marketplace models in the aviation industry. The aim is to conduct a theoretical analysis to explore whether or not e-Marketplaces have the potential to add value to procurement in the aviation industry. The research focuses on the potential of B2B e-Marketplaces in terms of improving an airline’s competitiveness in its procurement value chain. The theoretical framework adopted supports the identification of barriers to success and critical success factors.

Reinventing Leadership: Blended Dualism, Andrew Sikula Sr., Chong W. Kim Apr 2004

Reinventing Leadership: Blended Dualism, Andrew Sikula Sr., Chong W. Kim

Management Faculty Research

Leadership needs to be redefined and explained differently in terms of what we have learned about organizational directorship during the last few decades. In addition to a new definition, a post twentieth century model of leadership needs created with steps and parameters opposite from pre-2000 thinking and philosophy. This article presents a new leadership definition and model, plus it identifies leadership parameters, steps, and lessons. Furthermore, it introduces a new concept into management/leadership/organization literature called Blended Dualism which incorporates the very latest supervisory thinking into a holistic, integrated amalgam of what initially appears to be contradictory or at least paradoxical …

Electronic Purchasing Consortia: A Procurement Direction For The Future?, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth Apr 2004

Electronic Purchasing Consortia: A Procurement Direction For The Future?, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth

Conference papers

In literature, there has been little empirical research investigation on purchasing consortium
issues focusing on a detailed analysis of ICT-based procurement strategies. Based on the exploration of academic literature and a survey on e-Marketplaces / procurement service providers (PSPs) in the automotive and electronics industry sectors, an overall statement is proposed: Effective participation in electronic purchasing consortia can have the potential to enhance competitive advantage. Implementation therefore requires a clear and detailed understanding of the major process structures and drivers at the e-Marketplace / PSP level of analysis.

Draft Aquaculture Plan For Shark Bay., Department Of Fisheries

Fisheries Management Papers

The Department of Fisheries has prepared this draft aquaculture plan for Shark Bay to provide an agreed framework for future management of aquaculture. The final plan will assist prospective aquaculturists in preparing proposals and will guide the Department of Fisheries in the decision making process for aquaculture licence and lease applications. The plan identifies constraints to aquaculture development and areas where aquaculture may occur. It also identifies species that may be used for aquaculture development. Implementation of this plan will ensure that aquaculture can occur in a sustainable manner, while retaining the unique features of Shark Bay.

Accounting For Differences In Factory Performance When Adopting Flow Based Production Techniques: A General Purpose Conceptualization, Michael R. Lopez Apr 2004

Accounting For Differences In Factory Performance When Adopting Flow Based Production Techniques: A General Purpose Conceptualization, Michael R. Lopez

Student Scholarship

Despite abundant information describing the advantages that accrue from successful implementation of world class manufacturing (WCM) best practices, previous research provides little insight as to why the same techniques are able to foster competitiveness at one site yet fail to do so in another. Practitioners maintain that such discrepancies are due to contextual factors that preclude even immanently rational improvements from manifesting themselves in their operations. General purpose technology (GPT) theory suggests that heterogeneity results from innovational complementarities needed to fully benefit from the routine use of WCM practices. This exploratory study provides empirical support for complementary organizational changes, whereas …

How Unilever Hpc-Na Sold Its Employees On The Balanced Scorecard, Bridget Lyons, Andra Gumbus Apr 2004

How Unilever Hpc-Na Sold Its Employees On The Balanced Scorecard, Bridget Lyons, Andra Gumbus

WCBT Faculty Publications

Unilever Home & Personal Care-North America (HPC-NA) not only takes marketing its products very seriously, but it heavily promotes its balanced scorecard to employees as well. No wonder Unilever HPC-NA successfully designed a unique strategy to communicate awareness of the BSC while encouraging its participation and use. Their experiences should prove valuable to other organizations implementing a balanced scorecard and to those just beginning to formulate a communications approach to internal stakeholders about its role, significance, and use. The Unilever HPC-NA marketing campaign provides an effective strategy that other firms may consider when marketing a balanced scorecard internally. The HPC-NA …

The Effect Of Mergers And Acquisitions On The Wealth, Risk, And Efficiency Of Latin American Banks, Felice Policastro-Caccavale Apr 2004

The Effect Of Mergers And Acquisitions On The Wealth, Risk, And Efficiency Of Latin American Banks, Felice Policastro-Caccavale

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Over the last few years, mergers and acquisitions within Latin America's banking sector have significantly increased. From 1995 to 2003, Latin American countries experienced more than one thousand bank merger and acquisition deals. The majority of these mergers and acquisitions have occurred between domestic and foreign banks and, as a result, foreign banks now control more than fifty percent of the banking assets of Latin America's largest economies. In addition to the increased presence of foreign banks in Latin America, the process of mergers and acquisitions has reduced the number of banks in most Latin American countries and this has …

Some Key Questions About Stakeholder Theory, Robert A. Phillips Mar 2004

Some Key Questions About Stakeholder Theory, Robert A. Phillips

Management Faculty Publications

As businesses emerge as some of the most powerful institutions in the world, business ethics have never been more important, and given very recent history, more open to question. Corporations are relative newcomers to power, and for evidence of this we can look to Europe, where the oldest, largest, most elaborate buildings are the churches and cathedrals. For thousands of years, the church and its leaders were arguably the most powerful institution, but as the liberal notions of the Enlightenment supplanted church orthodoxy, the state supplanted religion as the more powerful institution. But at the dawn of the third millennium, …

It lists and explains the following components of a financial statement; Statement of Accounting Policies, Balance Sheet, Profit and Loss Account, Notes to the Accounts, Cash flow statements ,Value added statements, Five year financial …

Designing A Strategy To Effectively Communicate The Balanced Scorecard, Andra Gumbus, Bridget Lyons, Tom Wilson Mar 2004

Designing A Strategy To Effectively Communicate The Balanced Scorecard, Andra Gumbus, Bridget Lyons, Tom Wilson

WCBT Faculty Publications

As increasing numbers of organizations adopt the balanced scorecard (BSC) to align strategy with operations and measure progress toward meeting strategic goals, the importance of successful communication of the scorecard throughout the organization has become apparent. Successful implementation and effective use of the BSC occurs when organizational stakeholders recognize its role, use, and benefits. In the March/April 2003 issue of Cost Management, we detailed how Bridgeport Hospital, a member of Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS), adopted the BSC and used the scorecard to align capital investment decisions with strategy.1 In this article, we will profile how the hospital designed …

Establishing A Framework For The Oversight Of Major Defense Acquisition Programs - A Historical Analysis, Diane I. K. Kuderik Mar 2004

Establishing A Framework For The Oversight Of Major Defense Acquisition Programs - A Historical Analysis, Diane I. K. Kuderik

Theses and Dissertations

The Department of Defense (DoD) has budgeted over $134.5 billion for Fiscal Year 2004 for Acquisition, yet little is written about the personnel responsible for managing and evaluating Major Defense Acquisition Programs (MDAPs) -- those who perform Acquisition Oversight (AO). The AO process has not been studied in a disciplined manner during its 40-year history. Congress, past Administrations, and the DoD Inspector General have commissioned several studies on the AO Process. Recommendations were considered and implemented such that the process evolved to where it stands today. Over 40 years separate the first iteration with the latest version. Commission reports, countless …

An Analysis Of Generational Differences Among Active Duty Members, Stephanie M. Skibo Mar 2004

An Analysis Of Generational Differences Among Active Duty Members, Stephanie M. Skibo

Theses and Dissertations

There seems to be a widely held belief that different generations have different attitudes toward work, organizations, and co-workers. Clearly, these observed differences have implications for managers and leaders. Actions taken by leaders might be misunderstood by junior organizational members, leading to undesirable outcomes. Considering that many generational groups are represented within the Air Force, there is a need to analyze and understand potential generational differences. With the exception of the Smola and Sutton (2002) study, little empirical research has explored the extent to which these differences actually exist and whether differences exist among Air Force members. This research explores …

An Analysis Of Generational Differences Among Civil Servants, Stacey L. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

There seems to be a wide held belief that different generations have different attitudes toward work, organizations, and co-workers. Clearly, these observed differences have implications for managers and leaders. Actions taken by leaders (who are often older) might be misunderstood by junior organizational members (who are often younger), leading to undesirable outcomes (i.e., turnover). Considering that many generational groups are represented within government service, there is a need to analyze and understand potential generational differences. With the notable exception of the Smola and Sutton (2002) study, little empirical research has explored the extent to which these differences actually exist and …

The objective of this paper is to propose a process that will allow the decision makers to objectively assess the appropriateness, benefits and costs of any stock enhancement proposal under Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) principles. To this end, this paper sets out a conceptual framework for assessment of stock enhancement projects, putting stock enhancement within the wider framework of fisheries and ecosystem management strategies, and their assessment, in Western Australia.

Inventory Model With Seasonal Demand: A Specific Application To Haute Couture, Byung Joon Park, Yih-Long Chang, Johnny C. Ho Feb 2004

Inventory Model With Seasonal Demand: A Specific Application To Haute Couture, Byung Joon Park, Yih-Long Chang, Johnny C. Ho

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In the stochastic multiperiod inventory problem, a vast majority of the literature deals with demand volume uncertainty. Other dimensions of uncertainty have generally been overlooked. In this paper, we develop a newsboy formulation for the aggregate multiperiod inventory problem intended for products of short sales season and without replenishments. A distinguishing characteristic of our formulation is that it takes a time dimension of demand uncertainty into account. The proposed model is particularly suitable for applications in haute couture, i.e., high fashion industry. The model determines the time of switching primary sales effort from one season to the next as well …
