Corporate Evolution: From Ngos And Social Enterprises To ‘Good Companies’, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

Frequently seen as an alternative to the realities of hardcore corporate life, social entrepreneurship and its emphasis on giving back to society after a life of abundance, may well become a thing of the past, along with Non Government Organisations (NGOs), which often act as watchdogs of corporate and government policy and practice. Both will likely transition into and underpin new ‘good companies’. At least that’s the view of leading Singapore social entrepreneur, Jack Sim, the founder of the World Toilet Organisation (WTO).

Institutional Voids: Black Hole Or Opportunities?, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

Emerging markets and their institutional voids offer great growth potential for corporates and organisations seeking an exit strategy from the gloomy European market, says Harvard professor Tarun Khanna. ‘Institutional voids’, a phrase coined by Khanna in his book "Winning in Emerging Markets, refers to the absence of intermediaries like market research firms and credit card systems to efficiently connect buyers and sellers. This creates daunting obstacles for companies trying to operate in emerging markets. According to Khanna, understanding these voids – and learning how to work with them in specific markets – is the key to success

The Road Well-Travelled: Internationalism And Globalisation, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

Internationalism and globalisation involve more than the number of companies and the variety of jurisdictions in which they operate. For Stephen Wyatt, the transition to internationalism is a journey in which we are able to trace the evolution of firms making incrementally logical decisions and the natural consequence of where they are right now, whether they are incremental decisions seeking to maximise profitability or returns, or long term stability. And as those decisions continue incrementally, there is a continuum, or journey, along which they travel, that provides an opportunity

The Trojan Fish Strategy, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

How does an ornamental fish exporter grow its bottom line? Simple: By adopting and adapting the business model of the world’s most famous safety razor company. The Gillette Business Model, also known as Freebie Marketing, is much copied because of its simplicity: sell razors at a loss, or even give them away free, but make back your money with the disposable blade replacements. That same strategy has served many industries well

When he came up with the idea of selling toilets in Cambodia, where more than 60 per cent of the population does not have access to basic sanitation, National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre chief executive Laurence Lien was laughed at. His detractors told him: "Nobody is going to purchase toilets from you because this is a community that is dependent on (financial) aid. "But tens of thousands of the toilets were sold within the first few months. Speaking at the Africa Singapore Business Forum, Connex, held at Singapore Management University in August 2012, Lien credits the success of the …

Chameleonic Or Consistent? A Multilevel Investigation Of Emotional Labor Variability And Self-Monitoring, B. A. Scott, C. M. Barnes, David T. Wagner

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We introduce the concept of emotional labor variability, which captures individual differences in surface acting and deep acting fluctuations over time. In a multilevel study of 78 customer service employees who provided 522 matched daily surveys over a two-week period, employees who were more variable in their use of surface acting reported lower levels of job satisfaction and higher levels of work withdrawal. Selfmonitoring was positively associated with both the level and variability of surface acting, and the effects of surface acting variability on job satisfaction and work withdrawal were weaker when self-monitoring was high. The results for deep acting …

Sustainability In Clothing Supply Chains: Implications For Marketing, Sudhindra Seshadri

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Recommendations for sustainability strategies for business have predominantly taken an individual firm level perspective. Yet, sustainability efforts are by essence collaborative and span firm level boundaries. Multiple stakeholders espousing often divergent goals need to work together over long periods on sustainability collaborations. Well recognized externalities in the firm’s economic existence need to be addressed by multiple stakeholder skill sets and are fraught with high risks and uncertainties. These are conditions ripe for syndication, as financial and corporate syndicates have demonstrated. The rules of syndication cover the structure of membership, setting of goals and objectives, governance, incentives and sharing of rewards and …

Becoming Aware Of The Unknown: Decision Making During The Implementation Of A Strategic Initiative, Ronald Klingebiel, Arnoud De Meyer Mar 2012

Becoming Aware Of The Unknown: Decision Making During The Implementation Of A Strategic Initiative, Ronald Klingebiel, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This qualitative study analyzes the decision-making process involved in adapting preconceived courses of action during the implementation of a strategic initiative. We observe that the type of decision-making process hinges on the nature of managers’ emerging awareness of future events. When managers become aware of new uncertainty, the process involves selectiveness, deliberateness, and diligence. By contrast, when managers become aware of new certainty, the process conforms to the problem-solving adhocracy and decision-making messiness emphasized in prior literature. We summarize our findings in a framework, proposing that decision-level differences in awareness and uncertainty can explain the observed variation in strategic decision-making …

Steve Jobs can teach us a thing or two about customer loyalty. Though Apple products have sometimes fallen short of expectations, Apple customers think nothing of standing in line for hours just to get their hands on the company's latest. According to Valarie Zeithaml, a David S Van Pelt Family distinguished professor of marketing at the University of North Carolina, recent financials show that Apple is achieving US$4,406 per annum sales per square foot – far higher than brands such as the US$3,000 per annum sales per square foot of premier global jeweller Tiffany and US$1,700 per annum sales per …

The Role Of Reputable Auditors And Underwriters In The Design Of Bond Contracts, Yun Lou, Florin. Vasvari Sep 2011

The Role Of Reputable Auditors And Underwriters In The Design Of Bond Contracts, Yun Lou, Florin. Vasvari

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

The authors empirically test the certification hypothesis by studying the roles of reputableauditors and bank underwriters in the design of bond contracts. The certification hypoth-esis suggests that reputable capital market intermediaries can credibly communicate insideinformation to outside investors, thereby helping improve financing terms for firms thatraise external funding. Consistent with this hypothesis, the authors provide evidence thatreputable auditors and underwriters help corporate bond issuers obtain lower bond yields. The effect of reputable auditors on the yields is greater than that of reputable underwritersin terms of economic magnitude and significance, consistent with auditors’ multiple roles asinformation intermediaries, monitors, and insurance providers. The …

Exploiting Metaheuristics To Strategize On Performance-Based Logistics Contracts For Mro Services, Arnd Schirrmann, Elaine Wong, Zhichao Zheng

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

An inherent challenge of using Performance-Based Logistics (PBL) contracts for aircraftmaintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services is pricing. As with traditional bricks andmortar services, under-priced contracts cannot cover costs, while overpriced contracts loseout to competition. Furthermore MRO services have an additional element of uncertainty.Performance uncertainties arise due to the inability to accurately forecast demand of spareparts, while cost uncertainties are a result of globally distributed operations subjected tofluctuating economic conditions. Previous work to solve this contracting problem adoptedthe principal-agent model, obtaining an optimal solution from the perspective of both riskaverseparties (i.e., a price-sensitive customer and a profit-driven service provider). Thiswork …

Ownership Structure, Financial Structure And R&D Investment: Evidence From Korean Firms, Yanghua Chen Jan 2010

Ownership Structure, Financial Structure And R&D Investment: Evidence From Korean Firms, Yanghua Chen

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Understanding factors that can enhance a firm‟s innovativeness is of critical concern in management research. Prior studies in strategy and financial economics have advanced our understanding of how resource allocation into innovation is shaped in a firm, mainly from the perspectives of ownership and financial structures. However, the extant literature is incomplete, because it treats ownership and financial structures as separate determinants, even though theoretical arguments and empirical evidences suggest that they are interdependent. This study investigates the determinants of firm‟s R&D investments by bridging ownership and financial structures. Ownerships held by inside and external owners are considered for ownership …

Organizational Slack, International Expansion And Firm Profitability, Anran Liu Jan 2010

Organizational Slack, International Expansion And Firm Profitability, Anran Liu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

International expansion is a viable growth strategy for firms operating in an increasingly competitive business environment. Understanding the relationship between international expansion and firm performance has been a significant concern for theory development in the strategy and international business literature. The extant literature, however, has paid insufficient attention to the tradeoff between firm growth and profitability that may imply the existence of an optimal rate of growth. Drawing from the Penrosian perspective that emphasizes the role of resources in firm growth, this study investigates whether and how firm slack resources affect the tradeoff between international expansion and profitability. Specifically, this …

Using Decision Analysis To Value R&D Projects, Bert De Reyck Oct 2009

Using Decision Analysis To Value R&D Projects, Bert De Reyck

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Project portfolio management, the equivalent of financial portfolio management but focused on R&D projects rather than financial assets, often relies on decision analysis methods to value projects rather than traditional financial valuation methods such as net present value (NPV). In finance, the idea of managing portfolios of assets goes back a long time, with the first formal methods being developed in the 1950s. Simply put, assembling a portfolio of stocks, bonds, and other financial instruments balances the risk a manager is taking with any one of the investments. Over time, this same idea has also taken hold for managing a …

Convergence Of Corporate Governance: Critical Review And Future Directions, Toru Yoshikawa, Abdul A. Rasheed

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Research Question/Issue: Convergence in corporate governance across countries has been a subject of interest and controversy in a variety of disciplines. We attempt to address a number of related research questions: (1) what constitutes convergence? (2) what are the drivers that propel corporations in different nations towards convergence? (3) what are the major impediments that stand in the way of convergence? (4) what empirical evidence do we have to suggest that we are moving towards or away from convergence? and (5) what would be some productive avenues for further research on this topic? Research Findings/Results: Despite the vigorous intellectual position …
