Impatience To Response Time, Robert James Rovi May 1984

Impatience To Response Time, Robert James Rovi

Theses

The concept of waiting patiently and impatiently is examined and a model is proposed which is helpful in explaining Increases in the levels of impatience. A survey of people working in the computer field was taken so that a measure of the time within which the average person becomes impatient for a variety of computer operations could be determined. These answers were then compared with the results of a survey taken in 1968. Results show that there was no significant difference between these two groups even though the survey taken in 1968 was expected to show longer expected response times …

An Analysis Of Costs In Welding, Shashank Gangadhar

Theses

The investment making decision for welding machinery or the selection of an economic welding process is ccmplex due to the associated indirect expenses. For conventional evaluations certain cost elements can be disregarded since they are affected equally by competing alternatives. When considering welding equipment or calculating welding costs or selecting a welding process, the indirect costs assume a significant proportion and such factors must be carefully examined.

In this paper an attempt has been made to highlight the procedure for economic justification for welding machinery and the procedure for calculating the total weld costs. The calculation of such variables as, …

Proposed Product Plan For A High Growth, High Technology Organization, Alan R. Eschbach

Theses

Analyzing and consequently redefining a corporation's product line or mix is an important task facing all manufacturing organizations. While this task is usually addressed in detail as part of an organization's business plan, it can be very disconcerting when an organization realizes that the markets and products that got them to where they are now will not necessarily be the ones that will give them the growth that they would like to realize. Redefining the product line can be even more critical to young, high technology organizations who have never done it before and have found themselves facing the possibility …

The results of the study indicate a moderate degree of job satisfaction based on Vroom's model. Additionally, the correlations of specific instrumentality to specific valence give a strong indication that the subjects value rewards they perceive as attainable, …

The Operational Utility Of The Walton-Mckersie Attitudinal Structuring Model In Collective Bargaining, Donald Warren May 1983

The Operational Utility Of The Walton-Mckersie Attitudinal Structuring Model In Collective Bargaining, Donald Warren

Theses

This work is an heuristic inquiry into behavioral change theory designed for application to labor/management interaction in collective bargaining. The theory itself was postulated by Richard E. Walton and Robert B. McKersie in their book A Behavioral Theory Of Labor Negotiations. The principles of their theory are highly axiomatic and their importance and validity can only be recognized through applied empirical analyses that demonstrate or refute its concept.

The aspect of the theory which is the focal point of this research pertains to the structuring and restructuring of attitudes and attendant relationships resulting from the collective bargaining process. The objective …

Designing Cost Effective Pump Suction Systems Using Statistical Correlation Techniques To Estimate Vessel Elevation Costs, Neil J. Bernstein May 1983

Designing Cost Effective Pump Suction Systems Using Statistical Correlation Techniques To Estimate Vessel Elevation Costs, Neil J. Bernstein

Theses

In order to minimize total costs (investment plus operating costs) when elevating process equipment to meet hydraulic requirements, it is essential to establish cost effective and energy efficient pump suction systems. During the early stages of design of such systems it is most critical that preliminary costs be determined in a timely manner to avoid job delays. One method of accomplishing this is through the use of a cost estimating relationship for defining the price behavior of alternative pump suction systems. This thesis describes the procedure used to develop a mathematical model to predict the cost of elevating vertical drums. …

Peer Pressure Effect On Group Incentives, John Joseph Witkowski

Theses

When a group-incentive system, all participating workers receive the same bonus. Each pay-group establishes a pace which affects under-achievers and over-achievers.

A null hypothesis, that peer pressure has no effect on group incentives and the distribution of workers' efficiencies will fit a normal distribution, was formulated. The chi-square test was used to test the null hypothesis.

The first part of the study examined the effect of group incentives on experienced workers. The chi-square test indicated a highly significient difference between the actual efficiency distribution and the expected normal distribution; therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected. The measure of kurtosis indicated …

An Application Of Personal Microcomputer To Solve Mid-Sized Goal Programming Problems, Chanhon Joe Lu May 1983

An Application Of Personal Microcomputer To Solve Mid-Sized Goal Programming Problems, Chanhon Joe Lu

Theses

This thesis develops a microcomputer software to solve mid-sized goal programming problems utilizing the revised simplex method.

Goal programming is an extension of linear programming, but is more powerful and flexible than linear programming because of its capability in handling problems with multiple conflicting objectives, instead of dealing with "one dimensional" objective - profit maximization or cost minimization. Accordingly, goal programming is very useful to the complex organizational environments.

With the help of rapid and accurate computation of digital computers, solving a complex program is not a difficult task at all. However, some medium-sized companies cannot afford a mainframe -computer, …
