Dental Management Game Player's Manual, Arnold Reisman, Hamilton Emmons, Susumu Morito, Juan Rivaud, Edward J. Green
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This paper discusses progress on the development of a computer aided game to teach various management skills to dental students as well as to dental practitioners. The game first deals with the decisions concerning the establishment of a practice, e. g., preferences regarding location, the form (solo, associate or group) of practice, staff patterns and salaries, purchasing of facilities, etc. Next considered are decisions which must be made daily, e. g., patient and worker scheduling, control of supplies, etc. Performance is evaluated in terms of income, costs, care delivered, patient waiting time and personnel utilization.

Using The Blankenship Algorithm To Find The General Solution Of A Linear Diophantine Equation, Susumu Morito, Harvey M. Salkin
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This paper shows that the Blankenship algorithm, originally proposed to find the greatest common divisor of several integers and a solution of the associated linear diophantine equation, can be used to find the general solution of the equation. This yields a more efficient method to find the general solution than the one proposed by Bond. The modification of Blankenship's algorithm to avoid generating vectors with huge component values is also proposed.

A Two-Stage Approach For Geographic Effects In Cama Systems, Teunis J. Ott
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
A methodology is developed for the second stage of a Computer-Assisted Mass Appraisal System, which corrects the estimated assessed values of properties for their location. Recent sales close to the parcel in question are given heavier weight than other sales. The methodology is based on constructing a response surface, where the optimal response surface minimizes a weighted average of the sum of squared residuals and a quantity that represents the smoothness of the response surface. An algorithm, for which convergence has been proven, is provided for finding the optimal response surface.

Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This chapter examines the impact of Expanded Function Dental Auxiliaries (EFDA) on dental practice management, focusing on productivity and profitability. Various practice configurations with EFDA integration are compared to conventional setups, demonstrating that EFDA inclusion significantly reduces a dentist's workload, increases practice capacity, and enhances revenue and earnings. Tools and methodologies from Operations Research, such as patient load forecasting, scheduling, and economic analysis, are applied to assess these effects. A novel tool, the Dental Practice Management Game, is introduced, utilizing computer simulations to analyze complex practice scenarios without requiring specialized knowledge of Operations Research techniques. The analysis explores two key …

Infinite Divisibility Of Finite Semi-Markov Matrices, Teunis J. Ott
Infinite Divisibility Of Finite Semi-Markov Matrices, Teunis J. Ott
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
The theory of infinitely divisible semi-Markov matrices is a generalization of both the theory of infinitely divisible probability distributions on the real line, and the theory of infinitely divisible Markov matrices. One of the results in this paper is that the imbeddability in a continuous semigroup of transition kernels extends from infinitely divisible distribution functions and infinitely divisible Markov matrices to infinitely divisible semi-Markov matrices.

Research Reports from the Department of Operations
Between 1972 and 1975 mortality rate in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Forest City Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, showed a noticeable decline. While this decline could have been due to factors beyond the control of Forest City Hospital, it was decided to determine, on the basis of data obtained from patients who were admitted into the ICU during this period, whether admission policy in the ICU had changed or had not changed in the years 1972 through 1975.The purpose of this paper is to test the hypothesis that admission policy in the ICU had not changed against the alternative …
Interpersonal Communication : Some Quantitative Models, John J. Rasmussen
Interpersonal Communication : Some Quantitative Models, John J. Rasmussen
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
Interpersonal communication, or the sending and receiving of messages between two individuals, can be characterized by various degrees of certainty, consistency, and patterning. One's prior experiences can often affect current perceptions and attitudes. Furthermore, the various aspects of the personalities of the communicants can significantly influence whether the outcome of the communication sequence will be successful and mutually understood, or will be unsuccessful and misunderstood. This dissertation presents several models of the interpersonal communication process. These have been derived from such apparently divergent fields as mathematical communication theory, thermodynamics, behavioral science, and transactional analysis, and have been wedded into a …

Simulation Of Lamp Manufacturing: When To Shut Down, Davida Kahrl Steinbrink
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This thesis analyzes the impact of progressive deterioration of lamp-making equipment on finished lamp cost and quantity. This analysis is accomplished by describing the total process as a sequence of Markov processes, for each of which the transitional probabilities have been defined. The expected behavior of this multi-stage process over the time period of interest is calculated by a Fortran computer program. Results of the analysis may be used by a shop foreman as a guide in determining when to shut down for repair or maintenance of equipment.

Optimal Labeling On Trees, Raghavendra N. Rao
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
Consider the problem of labeling the nodes of a given tree on n nodes with labels 1,2,...,n. Let d(i,i+1) be the number of edges in the path from node labeled i to node labeled i+1, i=1,2,...,n. d(n,n+1) is considered as d(n,1). The sum of d(i,i+1) over i=1,2,.. .,n is the quantity, call it SL' of interest. The minimum of SL is 2(n-1) for any tree on n nodes. This result is established and an efficient algorithm is given to achieve this value. This result is extended to trees having non-negative edge lengths. Since this problem can also be considered as …

On The Degree Of Approximation By Monotone Polynomials, Vasant A. Ubhaya
On The Degree Of Approximation By Monotone Polynomials, Vasant A. Ubhaya
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This article considers the problem of approximating a continuous function defined on an interval by polynomials which are monotone nondecreasing there. Upper and lower bounds on the degree of approximation are obtained in terms of moduli of monotonicity, a concept which the author introduced in an earlier article [12]. Certain asymptotic results are also established. One of the results of this article shows that when f is continuous but not nondecreasing, En(f), the degree of approximation of f by monotone polynomials of degree at most n, converges to a positive number as n→∞, at a rate which is at least …

Systems And Procedures Of Patients And Information Flow In The Outpatient Clinic Of A Large Health Center: A Systems Description, Critical Evaluation, And Recommendations For Improvement, Arnold Reisman, Joao Mello Da Silva, Joe Mantell
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
Systems analysis methods were used to describe the existing procedures for patient and information flow in the outpatient clinic of a large metropolitan health center. The procedures were complex, and they fell short of being effective from the physicians’, the patients’, and the administrators’ points of view. They were the result of the dynamics of natural degradation during a period of institutional expansion and extension. The paper delineates, in operationally meaningful terms, the ultimate goals and the objectives for the Patient and Information Flow System as well as the processes to be used to achieve same.

Research Reports from the Department of Operations
A nonnegative, infinitely differentiable function φ defined on the real line is called a Friedrichs mollifier function if it has support in [0,1] and ∫₀¹ φ(t)dt = 1. In this article the following problem is considered: Determine Ak = inf ∫₀¹ φ(k)(t)dt, k=1,2,..., where φ(k) denotes the kth derivative of φ and the infimum is taken over the set of all mollifier functions, which is a convex set. This problem has applications to monotone polynomial approximation as shown by this author in Ref. 2. The problem is reducible to three equivalent problems--a nonlinear programming problem, a problem on the functions …

Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This paper describes one aspect of a general methodology for the management of a dental practice; in general and in particular, of one involving Expanded Duty Dental Auxiliaries. The aspect of concern in this paper centers on the economic analysis of practice management. Thus, the paper presents both an algebraic statement of the economic analysis and a set of forms (similar in format to the International Revenue Service 1040 forms) which can be used to respond to the following questions: (1) Given a patient load and mix, a practice configuration (i.e., the number of operatories and of workers of each …
On The Next-To-Dominating Eigenvalues Of A Markov Matrix, Teunis J. Ott
On The Next-To-Dominating Eigenvalues Of A Markov Matrix, Teunis J. Ott
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
It is proven that two matrices, each of which has the property that all its rowsums are equal, and which have the property that one can be obtained from the other by adding, for every column, the same number to all elements of that column, have essentially the same set of eigenvalues. This result is used to give an upper bound for the absolute value of the "next-to-dominating" eigenvalue of a markov matrix. The two foregoing results together are used to suggest an iterative procedure for the value-determination step in markov-decision processes.

A Methodology For Forecasting Patient Load For A Dental Practice, Arnold Reisman, Hamilton Emmons, Edward J. Green, Ronald Occhionero, Keki R. Dadachanji, Susumu Morito
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
This paper describes a methodology to forecast the patient load in a dental practice. Three different situations are treated individually: Forecasting in a new practice, forecasting in an established practice, and forecasting during merger. The paper presents both the mathematical models used in forecasting and a set of forms (similar in format to the Internal Revenue Service 1040 forms) which can be used to systematically compute the forecast value. Scheduling of patients and operatories [4,12] and economic analysis of a dental practice [6] require a dependable forecast of the patient load. This paper is intended to help the dentist make …
