In the financial turmoil of 2008, U.S. firms reported debt-ratios that differed from the debt-ratios calculated from balance sheets. The problem is that investors bought common stock expecting initial investment return and lost money when companies delisted. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine sample securities pricing with the application of synthetic assets and debt accrued. Addressed in the research questions was whether those securities were (a) underpriced compared with return-on-assets (ROA), (b) overpriced compared with ROA, (c) a debt-ratio higher than 60% and also overpriced, (d) underpriced with a synthetic asset added, or (e) related by relative …

Personal saving is valuable for the whole nation. Saving of today, affects the consumption of future, because the saved money is invested in financial assets and goes through investments in industries, factories, prosperities, and other kinds of investment that is necessary for country’s growth. Saving also can help the country recover from financial crisis more easily. In this study the factors that are likely to increase personal saving are measured. This paper evaluates the effects of the recent banking sector in Nigeria on monetary policy transmission. The remainder of this paper is structured as follows: section two dwells on the transmission mechanism of monetary policy; section three examines the features of the banking sector that affect the conduct of monetary policy; section four presents banking sector reforms in Nigeria while section five examines the impact of the reforms on monetary policy. Section six presents the challenges while section seven concludes the paper.

This paper contrasts the economics and the management discourse paradigms to identify the purposes these discourses serve in sustaining and reproducing capitalist order The paper begins with an identification of the major characteristics of capitalist order Section 2 and 3 compare and contrast economics and management discourses respectively on the basis of the role they are designed to play in legitimizing and operationalizing capitalist order The concluding section argues that their roles vary in efficacy. Both economics and management provide incomplete justificatory and reformative proposals but this is because capitalism is an inherently conflictive social order always threatened by implosion. …

The foreclosure rate of the Las Vegas Valley is five times the national average and the highest rate in the country (Hoak, 2010). Sales tax revenues continue spiraling down and fell by 6.6 percent in December 2009 from December 2008 (Garcia, 2010). State politicians face an estimated budget deficit of $3.5 billion. Recently, a paper published by Celeux et al. (2006) presented several forms for the deviation information criterion (DIC) for mixture models, each version is depended on the kind of probability function. However, no reliable version was adopted for those models. As an idea inspired by Brooks (2002, p. 617), we develop, in this paper, Bayesian deviations plugging into two known criteria: the Akaike information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC) for choosing best mix model. Shareholder activism is a response to corporate underperformance by one or more shareholders of the corporation. Classic agency theory suggests that shareholder activism is a mechanism to curb principal-agent problems in the firm. However, the principal-principal perspective suggests that shareholder activism is a mechanism for dominant shareholders to extract resources from the firm. يعد الوعي ضرورة أساسية في أية قضية فهو عامل إبداع مضاف، واستناداً إلى هذا الفهم فإن مسالة الوعي بأهمية الضريبة ودورها يقود إلى انتقالها من فكرة الجباية المجردة، إلى فكرة جديدة يكون مفادها الالتزام الضريبي اختياراً حراً يمارسه الإفراد بوعي لمدلولاته المختلفة وسيقود في النهاية إلى اعتبار الضريبة واجباً وطنياً يؤول نفعها إلى الجميع بصورة أو بأخرى. ويهدف البحث الى بيان الدور المهم والفاعل الذي يمكن ان تلعبه المؤسسات بمختلف اشكالها في نشر الوعي الضريبي لدى المكلفين لما لهذا الدور من أثر واضح في تقليل حالات التهرب الضريبي وزيادة العوائد الضريبية من خلال إدراكهم أهمية الاسهام في تحمل الأعباء العامة …

تناولت الدراسة الممارسة الحالية لمجالات المراجعة الخارجية للأداء البيئي في السودان، حيث هدفت إلى التعرف على العلاقة بين المحددات المتعلقة بالمنشأة، والمحددات المتعلقة بمراجعي الحسابات أنفسهم، والمحددات المتعلقة بالبيئة الخارجية والتشريعات الحكومية وبين مستوى ممارسة مجالات المراجعة الخارجية في بيئة الاعمال السودانية ومن ثم تقديم بعض الإجراءات والممارسات التي يمكن أن تساهم في تطوير عملية مراجعة الأداء البيئي في السودان. ولتحقيق اهداف الدراسة تم اعداد استمارة استبيان وزعت على المراجعين الخارجيين بولاية الخرطوم حيث بلغ حجم العينة (200) مراجع خارجي. توصلت الدراسة إلى أن أبرز المحددات تمثلت في عدم اهتمام منشآت الأعمال بمراجعة الأداء البيئي والافصاح عنه في التقارير والقوائم …

Trusts Versus Corporations: An Empirical Analysis Of Competing Organizational Forms, A. Joseph Warburton

This paper studies the effects of organizational form on managerial behavior and firm performance, from an empirical perspective. Managers of trusts are subject to stricter fiduciary responsibilities than managers of corporations. This paper examines the ramifications empirically, by exploiting data generated by a change in British regulations in the 1990s that allowed mutual funds to organize as either a trust or a corporation. I find evidence that trust law is effective in curtailing opportunistic behavior, as trust managers charge significantly lower fees than their observationally equivalent corporate counterparts. Trust managers also incur lower risk. However, evidence suggests that trust managers …

Global poverty has received significant attention in the past decade, particularly after the adoption of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals in 2002. Commentators and ethicists like Peter Singer have long held that the wealthy of the world have an obligation to help the poor. While the sentiments may be positive, there are real harms that have come from this kind of top down thinking. Subsidiarity, to the contrary, is a much more realistic and morally tenable approach to global poverty.

Since July 2007, the world economy has experienced a severe financial crisis that originated in the U.S. housing market. Subsequently, the crisis has spread to financial sectors in European and Asian economies and led to a severe worldwide recession. The existing literature on financial crises rarely distinguishes between factors that create the original strain on the financial sector and factors that explain why these strains lead to system-wide contagion and a possible credit crunch. The assumption that contracts are largely impersonal, rational, voluntary agreements drawn up between self-interested individual agents is a convenient fiction, necessary for analysis using conventional economic methods. Papers prepared for a recent conference on ethics and international debt were shaped by just such an assumption. The adequacy of this approach is, however, challenged by evidence about who is affected by international debt, how contracts are actually made and followed, the behavior of actors in financial markets, and the motivations of scholars themselves.
